  • i wish music today was like this they knew whatgroup unity was and they had great harmony not like the freaks who have no since of rythum today

  • why aren't the new songs this good. This song is a classic.

  • A beautiful song by a great group.

  • @kanglon agreed; totally

  • This song reminds me of hot summer days at the Jersey shore, the smell of tanning lotion, seagulls hovering, cool wind, hot skin, and this song in the background. Ahhh.....!!!

  • Great song. Thanks for the memories. What beautiful voices.

  • You're welcome, donlarsen1956-san!!

    Otaku3 (^_^)/

  • Great music.

    Great era

  • One more song written and originally performed by Laura Nyro that became a hit for someone else. It's no wonder that Elton John called Laura his favorite songwriter.

  • A lot happened in 1968.

  • @isukaman Yes, and most of it not too good. Thank goodness the music was great, because the world around us felt like it was coming apart the seams.

  • Joe Osborn plays an excellent Fender Jazz bass, and in my opinion he blows away Carol Kaye

  • The first time I heard this was when I came out of a coma in the Chu Lai Hosptol in Vietnam. I remember a gorgeous GI nurse standing over my bed with the most beautiful smile I have ever seen or will ever see on a woman. I thought I was in heaven.

  • Yeah baby this is oldies school which these young people of today don't understand ... Old school music will never die......

  • Joe Osbourne playing bass and Hal Blaine drums, what a combo. Something about Joe's bass just gives the songs he plays that "Groove" thing

  • YouTube had a fantastic live video of Stoned Soul Picnic but it was removed. The other versions don't even come close.

  • @silver873 - there is a live version still on.. ..it's a bit quicker than the studio version but fantastic...

  • doulos58,

  • They play this at my work and the first time I heard it I was like, "why the HELL do the just keep saying 'celery' over and over!?!?!?!?"

But now I learn it's 'surry'.

Somehow, it doesn't make much more sense than 'celery'

  • first platinum single for this LA based band

  • god why dont we have music like ths now when we need it?

  • This song takes me back to our senior class picnic the day after the prom in June of 1968! Good times and great memories!

  • this cut brings back very fond childhood memories

  • @mightylittle729 Not funny clown. Quit ruining my natural high with your drug induced high.

  • @rayjr62 moonshine man-made...NOT natural

  • classic

  • Trio skating! Love this song. Great harmonizing!!!!

  • Love you Laura

  • Yhis was the best of times because of eevvverrytthiing that was happening then,,Viet Nam, Kent State, Flower Power, the draft, VW buses, afros, Hulabaloo, Make Love NOT War. WOW. We changed the WORLD

  • JUST WONDERFUL!!

  • I can't believe that their version of 'MacArthur Park' is not posted. I want to hear it again and my only tape of theirs that had the song on it tore up.

  • That’s a shame...

Most of their songs are blocked by YouTube for copyright protection in a lot of areas.

    Otaku3 (=_=;)

  • @kjohns2001 I wish I could send you MacArthur Park, starring the dearly departed Mr. Ron Townson of the Fabulous 5th Dimension. It's on their "Live" album, I'll bet you already know that. You miss good things.

  • this group harmonizes SO WELL.....can any of these groups today do that? sadly no

  • @doc2skate I can relate to your comment! Also, when this song came out, my dad took me fishing early one morning out to a fishing pier on Indian Rocks Beach, Fl. where a man was battling a huge Tarpon from the end of the pier. A large crowd had gathered, together with the man's two sons. Someone had a transistor radio out there and I vividly remember this song playing on the radio as the man fought the Tarpon for an hour-and-a-half. It weighed 120 lbs! This song reminds me of that event!

  • I've been loving this song and group since 10th grade. I had no idea what sassafras was, lol!

  • Looking at the still picture in this video while listening to the song is like looking at 1968. That picture IS worth 1,000 words.

  • Great song from a geat group. Unfortunately, this group did not get the credit for their music that they deserved.

  • Can you surrey can you picnic...can you surrey can you picnic...red yellow honey sassafrass and moonshine..,,,they don't make em like this anymore!

  • Reminds me of riding to my 1st summer job with my great, big brother in his 1967 chevy pickup, with this playing on the AM radio. My sister and I rode with him for free and he got me the job in the first place. He also got us tickets to see The Fifth in concert. I will never forget it. It was the best concert I ever attended. I get a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye every time I hear this song start. The Fifth Dimension is one of my top 3 all time favorites.

  • Another good cover of a Laura Nyro song by the Fifth Dimension. Thanks otaku!

  • You're welcome, tdell1275-san!!

  • @snopbox So that your ass could have been shipped to southeast Asia?

  • @Alikah1 Let it go, please! Just enjoy the music.

  • What on earth happened to Black music?

Rap just makes them look like apes , This is along with bands

like Earth Wind and fire , Stevie Wonder and many more proclaimed

true music , its a shame its gone.

  • @vegasshowgirlshoes YOU are so right,it's a lost art.

  • @vegasshowgirlshoes uh who is them...?

  • summer of '68, it was on the jukebox at the pool...played it over and over...is still tied

with Jr. Walker's, "What Does It Take" as my favorite pop song of all times...loved

the arrangement of Laura Nyro's tune with the Hammond B-3/Leslie, combined with the piano...

"there'll be trains of trust, trains of golden dust..." Magical!

  • Yeah, how come you don't hear tamborine anymore?

  • Marilyn McCoo is indeed a major BABE!

  • Beyonce WISHES she was Marilyn McCoo.

    Dream on.

  • @rayjr62 ~YES!!!!!

  • @edwardjames50 Name em!

  • @rayjr62 MWHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! You are SO RIGHT!! Marilyn was/is so beautiful and talented! Anyone tell Beyonce that wearing sky-hi heels and low-cut dresses looks stupid on a pregnant woman?? Did I mention that Marilyn was also extremely intelligent?

  • @rayjr62 Yeah whe she acquires an adult signing voice, and does the work and practice to become an accomplished singer. My God to even use her in the same sentence as Marilyn McCoo.

  • laura nyro wrote this song and also has a great version with her singing

  • Groovy baby ;-)

  • Enjoy...

  • Songs like this remind me of my early teenage years in the 60's. I liked good singing and clean music. What has happened to music?

  • @MrFredWills ~ I know..sure do miss those days ~

  • Why they're not in the R&R Hall of Fame but ABBA is reeks of injustice

  • @CARLGOLDSBY abba had more hits..but I am partial to the 5thd.....extreme talent...hey chicago isn't in the hall of fame and reon russell is??? tom waites is....what does that tell you... I love this band!

  • @CARLGOLDSBY abba had more hits..but I am partial to the 5thd.....extreme talent...hey chicago isn't in the hall of fame and leon russell is??? tom waites is....what does that tell you... I love this band!

  • Great song from late great 1968 ! amid the chaos, turbulence and upheaval of that year, the Fifth Dimension provided a brief respite.

  • its amazing how music brings back so many vivid memories. i remember exactly what year this came out and how old i was. it makes me remember my wonderful mother. i luv you momma. i know u are always around. smooch

  • This song was written by the late great songwriter Laura Nyro who should be inducted in to the Rock Hall of Fame.

  • They were nothing short of smooth.

  • Me too. Family down the shore. I was 7 when this came out!!

  • Such a classic.

  • This brings back such great memories of being with my family at the Jersey shore. I was 8 when this song came out - thank you for posting!!

  • You're welcome, nycdweller-san!!

    Otaku3 (*^_^)v

  • Ahh, Summer's coming. I can feel it in the air now. This, some Friends of Distinction, some Sly & The Family Stone, a full picnic basket, something chilled, and a nice beach.

We'll be Groovin' on a Sunday afternoon (and probably call in sick to work on Monday, 'cause you all know about Rainy Days and Mondays, right?).

  • @roadwarr Can I get an "AMEN"!!!!!!!!

  • I was looking for a song that reminded me of my childhood...awesome song!

  • In a time of such turmoil, this beautiful song appeared. It remains one of my favorites. Sincere thanks for the upload.

  • Id like to "surry down" to Marilyn's apt...

  • @Cromag99 Crackin' me up, dude!

  • She's always been quite classy as far as I can tell. And all their music speaks for itself. Just fantastic.

  • isn`t it great to see a black woman using her god given talent and not flaunting her sexuality? something you don`t see nowadays-the 5th dimension should be in the rock and roll hall of fame for sure!

  • Marin Town & Country Club, June 1968, with David, Russell, Margie, Nanci, Jeannie, and me! Good times while the world around us was going mad! We were only 18 and enjoyed every minute of it before we graduated from high school.

  • love , love, give me a fix :)

    domo

  • Dou itashimashite (You're welcome), MrBuckwilliam-san!!

  • was listening to this as a kid in brooklyn...sheep's headbay in brooklyn..just before we went for a sightseeing boat ride..ran into a terrible storm at sea...boat almost sank!! remember it like it was yesterday.........

  • I can really dig these guys man!

  • A sweet reminder of my childhood, watching my parents grooving!!

  • classic!!!

  • i saw them at a free concert in "cambridge common" ouside boston--(bands like the chambers bros-rare earth-sly and the family stone-all free every sunday)those days are sure gone huh??

  • A true classic song from my Junior high days! :)

  • Pack the coolers and autos, heading down to Rock Creek Park, in DC. which'in the grow folks jamm'in.

  • What does your comment mean??

    ...Otaku3

  • @mygeechie reminds me of family reunions when i was a kid in the 70s... uncles and aunties breaking out the oldies...nothing better.

  • Love it! Laura Nero :)

  • so beautiful. Love the 60's music

  • why can't someone start a petition for the group to be inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame?

  • @snaga63 Because the Rock n Roll hall of fame is a sad joke. A pack of aging babyboomers decide to create a "hall of fame" for something as subjective as music? Please. The Fifth Dimension were brilliant and will be remembered as one of the premier soul acts of their day, regardless of what a group of ovder-the-hill rock critics have to say.

  • @arkady714 you nailed it! i've always thought music hall of fames' a complete sham. they were made for athletics, where there is no dispute who the greats are because of their achievements and statistics.

  • @snaga63 You mean they're not in there? All the hits they gave us.

  • This song is making me cry tears of joy...what of today can do that? I ask you. This music had magic and sparkles. Thank you!

  • You're welcome, BartelDoo-san!!

    Otaku3 (^o^)/

  • Ahhhh, what a sound. It's been awhile since I've heard that (great) memory. THANKS.

  • You're welcome, poopermax-san!!

    Otaku3 (*^_^)/

  • What a class act they are!!. and all I can say is WoW to the quality of good vintage analog recording!

  • I've spent the better part of 2 hours listening to your music selections. Thank you for bringing me back to a much better time and place.

  • You're welcome, chefmarco34668-san!!

I am so glad you enjoyed my music selections.

    Otaku3 d(^o^)b

  • Wonderful memories......life was so much freer then.

  • stone soul woooooo ooooo from the lord and lightn stone soul oooooooo!!!!!!!!

    were are they now ?

  • I wonder how EnVogue would do with a re-make of this song. They re-did "Yesterday" and if I was Paul McCartney, I'd never sing it again!

  • thank you

  • You're welcome, joelperronful-san!!

    Otaku3 (^o^)/

  • this is such a great song

  • I have no clue why i like this..But its pretty nice

  • The 5th Dimension had a distinctive sound and their records were beautifully produced. Great voices and harmonies as well. I can't imagine anyone else doing justice to this song and others like Sweet Blindness, Wedding Bell Blues and Up Up and Away. And if they not in the R&R Hall of Fame yet I'm not sure what the voters are looking for.

  • @hgross75 YES, the production, esp the arranging, is what creates a great song. My channel is a hall of fame honoring over 350 different artists, like 5D, each with their own playlists. I added this to 1968 in my series of 111 playlists for every year since 1900. Come listen to any year you choose in over a century of pop music ! ! !

  • Love this song....but what exactly does surry mean?

  • @jjgeorgia1985

    surrey......like stroll

  • Surry Down Surry down LOL I LOVE that ..I had know Idea what they were saying back then ...I was only about 9 LOL

  • This is a bad motha !! My favorite line is ♫ And from the sky comes the Lord and the Lightning . And from the sky comes the Lord and the Lightniiiiinnggg ♫ OWWW THIS SONG IS THAT LAID BACK COOLIN YA HEELS SOUL WOOOO !

  • I only ever herd up up & away & Aquarius , By this group but love all these tracks .

    Very summer sounding .

Something needed in this part of the world (LOL)

  • I think this is the best song to show the range of their voices. This is the best harmony I've ever heard from the Fifth Dimension.

  • Fifth Dimention are my all time favorite group! I love there music, I love there costumes. My favorite song is Puppet Man. It puzzles me as to why this song didn't make it on the top of the charts? It should have blown the compitition off the map!

  • I was born two years after this came out and I fell in love with it after my moms played it.

  • @oldschoolbx1970 I myself was a mere four (4) years old when this song was released. I have memories of this song back then, still.....

  • @Logic1914 I hear that, bro. What city did you grow up in?

  • @oldschoolbx1970 I grew up in Bronx, New York. However, when this was released I was a toddler residing in New York, New York. My family and I moved to the Bronx three years after this was released OR one year after you were born.

  • @Logic1914 I'm from The Boogie Down, too. I live blocks from where Beat Street was filmed. I've been within that area since days after I was born.

  • @oldschoolbx1970 I resided in the south Bronx for over 20 years. I now reside in central Bronx but I am not far from the south Bronx at all.

  • @Logic1914 Long live the Boogie Down.
