@dragonslayerED30 Andy's playing his then-new guitars at Michael Greenfield's workshop in Canada, where he went to pick them up directly from their luthier! Michael doesn't do factory tours, so it's a privilege to be able to see the workspace where such exceptional instruments are created.
@AeroheadLS Me: "Honey, I want to get this new guitar, it's only $700. My wife: "That's too expensive." Andy: "Honey, I want to get this new guitar, it's only $14,500." Andy's Wife: "That's too cheap." Sad face...
@blaksephirot they're fanned frets - they allow the guitar to have multiple scale lengths. it's really neat to see them on a regular 6-stringed acoustic, though - i've only seen them on electric 7 and 8 strings so far, and one custom electric 6 string.
man i just dont know if i could get used to them frets..and go back to conventional frets..i know Steve Via came up with the squiggly fretted deal..for perfect chords and all..but really...i mean come on..lol..1 out of a million people can hear the miss intonation..people like Andy here this guitar is good for..i bet its Brazilian rosewood..or Koa..and prolly very deep body at that..my Taylor sounds just fine to me man..lol..ill stick with that...
fuck shit fuckin fuck ....what the fuck...shit this guitar makes me fuckin mad shittttttttttttttt i wanna i gotta guitar and it's 100$ imagine how it sounds :D :D fuckkkkkkkkkkkk
@SaddleScars uh, it was a compliment, I guess your knowledge of music theory and such is low. his guitar style tries to to the work of multiple instruments, no bad in that, but just pointing out he could actually compose multiple instrument pieces and probably make even more beautiful music.
@kaptenmax But that's what you seem to miss - this is Andy's style. The beauty lies in the fact that he CAN play rhythmic, melodic and percussive parts simultaneously AND make a beautiful song out of it; it's not about what's "correct" according to music theory and such things. Making original music is akin to coming at a blank canvas - there are no rules. You can take to it with a brush in a masterfully trained hand, or you can start painting with your fingers. Give Andy a guitar-he'll be fine.
@kaptenmax Having said that - I'm NOT downing you man. I misread your "compliment." And admittedly, I am musician who has been crafted by my own ear; I don't read music. Having some music theory courses would undoubtedly help me on my musical journey... I just use every tool I have, music theory not being one of them at the moment.
I have to agree though; I bet Andy could compose some badass songs with a full band :)
@kalahor Focus on training your fretting hand to do the beat and hammer-on rhythm notes first... once you get that down to the point it feels natural, THEN start trying to get your picking hand used to tapping out the notes (by itself! don't incorporate the rhythm notes/beat yet!) until that becomes easy enough... then, gradually (and patiently) begin to combine them together. The final step is toughest, but that's how I went about it...
@oatmealpizza4u I have learned this song and no matter how much I play it I never get sick of it. I know i can't really speak for Andy, but I never tire of hearing or playing this song!
@pootinhammer Fanned frets are used for helping intonation. On many songs andy uses open chord tunings. The way the frets are fanned on this guitar helps give him good intonation, as sometimes with straight frets having strings tuned down (or up etc) lots can screw up the intonation.
They are also used on 8 and 9 string guitars. and 8 strings low F# string can sound muddy and rubbish with 25.5 scale length, but raising the S L makes string bending harder. Fanned frets give you both.
The frets are fanned to best easy play things like "Drifting": you have high frets just in face of you. Normal frets are not in face on this kind of playing.
Is not a matter of intonation. Once you have fanned frets, you MUST adapt the bridge.
@warrenmusic I don't think so...I think that's why you CAN tighten and loosen the strings...and, maybe you are right, but I think it depends on what type of strings you use...I dunno I've been plain guitar for a while, and find that fanned guitars more of...harmonize? better.
@PsychoBeast1980 Tuning isn't the problem. It's the intonation of the note at each fret. Your fundamental note can be in tune without the 12th fret being a perfect octave, so the fanned frets are meant to address that problem.
@PsychoBeast1980 1 octave is a half, but there are plenty of guitars with sharp or flat 12th fret octaves. Just use a tuner and play a few guitars; it won't be long before you find one. Fanned frets mainly deal with the scale length, which in turn fixes intonation issues.
that guitar is sweet. It's seems to be ergonomically correct the way the frets are. .. Tone is very nice as well. I dont' play guitar by the way, so I'm just throwing in 2 cents.
On regular-fretted guitars; the intonation is in fact a tiny bit off. For the untrained ear it is nearly unnoticable, but an experienced musician like McKee can tell the difference.
When using fanned frets the intonation is actually perfected, so every note will sound spot on everywhere you play on the neck.
For more information; check Andys live video where he breaks a string; he explains it there.
It does not only have to do with intonation. In fact, the intonation is only a slight bonus.
If you have a really long scale length, say 30" the bass strings will sound incredibly deep and rich while the thinner strings will sound shallow and lifeless. a shorter scale does just the opposite. The bass strings sound poor and the trebble strings sound great. A fan gives you the best of both, as it has multiple scale lengths.
well, i think this proves the man's true talent, he sounds unbelievable on a regular camcorder with a small mic, and unplugged, im sorry, but anyone who said the video and audio were recorded separately on the last one were sadly wrong, i think this man is just truly unbelievable. and it just looks like he takes so much joy in making music that makes him pleased.
it looks like hes in his shed where he fixes shoes ( in the background). what a big ASS guitar. this makes me realize how much a good plugin and mic can improve the sound.
the guitars look just as big in the videos when he was heavier, but he's probably around 5'5 tall, maybe less... so any guitar will look big on him, this vid is just zoomed out more and you can see it more clearly.
It's a fan fretted guitar. A fan fretted guitar as that shape because it forces the guitar to stay in tune and it allows the four bass strings to have a better low end sound.
