In order for shuttle to land like an airplane, shuttle has to be a Heavy lift rocket (an all the major expens involved with a heavy lift system). Landing gear adds a lot of weight. It takes 1 hour for Shuttle to de-orbit and land. Only the last 40 seconds can the wings actually used for landing as it gets below 750 mph from 17500 mph. The reward of landing like an airplane was totally NOT work the expense of 1.6 Billion a flight.

Nice landing. Awesome controlled crash is basically what that is by an awesome pilot. The Shuttle won't fly like a normal aircraft so it comes down faster to be able to stay in the air to make the runway. Otherwise it would drop like a rock. Awesome Job.!

If we had Falcon9 rather than Shuttle and spent the same money for 135 Shuttle flights we would have had 4995 Falcon9 flights. To put that in perspective Shuttle carried 945 to space with 14 dead and Falcon9 would carried 34,965 people into space with 0 deaths. That is is 34,020 people that did not get to go into space because we think its cool to land like an airplane.
