how the hell can you say that federer is playing an eastern grip??? hes semi western to western on his forehand side. the argument that he can also hitting flat balls is not to the conclusion that hes therefore eastern. he can hit every shot, so also heavy topspin forehand. how do you explain that?

An extreme western grip is made for spin because it naturally closes the racket face, this is the grip that Rafael Nadal uses. A modified eastern grip is more conservative grip, it is generally used to hit flat shots. Also it is easier to hit off the bounce with the modified eastern grip. This is the grip that Roger Federer hits with on his forehand side.

Federer uses an extreme continental grip. It's almost an eastern backhand grip. I have hit with him in New York as practice at the NTC. He showed some of the people there what grip he used and we decided that its an extreme continental.

However, since he met Nadal he has become more competitive & interesting (when they play together). Rodger fights his challenger with his very best tennis!
