Once more, Behan wrote at least two great plays ("The Hostage" and "The Quare Fellow"). He also produced essays, memoirs and other pieces that remain well worth reading all these years later.
But Behan, by his own admission, was also a drunk, clearly smashed in this film.
I hope some videos of Behan while sober eventually appear on YouTube --
Well said, BB! Drunkenness is looked down upon because it's a damaging addiction that steals your freedom, & takes more than it gives, & pisses a drunk's children's shoes & coats away.....if they've no children, less harm, but you have more freedom if you control your substance, ie, occasional use, so it doesn't control you.
@smeejit My late mother said gambling was a worse additction.... one could drink half a persons wages arriving home with the outher half, but you could loose [ sign away].... the family home or Farm just on the turn of a Card....
This was filmed very shortly before his death and shows how ill he was. Unfortunately his illness made the effects of drink worse and the drink made his illness worse, so it was a real downward spiral.

Because he is fucking drunk. I would say a genius wouldn't drink himself to death. Talented with words he may be, but sounds like a drunken twit to me. How do you like that? And I'm only stoned.
u sound english, and yea he was addicted to alcohol, like many men his age in ireland and england at that time, whats your point?? and as the man himself said "i'm a drinker with a wrighting problem" ,plenty of "geniuses" have/had adiction's ,because there human aswell, and yea im preyy baked aswell!
I was responding to preacain who asked,"why do people say he's drunk?" I mean...come on now. So many artistic types have substance abuse problems and it's a real shame. And for the record, I'm baked again...maybe I should seek help...nah, forget that! Peace!
@finnandcork Hey, I didn't see this rude comment until now. Cuntox? Maybe I haven't been to the zoo in a long time but I don't remember the cuntox cage. Up your ass you homo fuckhead!

A busted face with swollen grace was Davis Miles enchanted,
To paint a scene with notes that glean, while Luther King he ranted,
Freedom is a FICKLE BITCH unless you sing it loudly.
If Behan was around today, he'd surely scream it proudly....
