  • I had the BC-780XLT years ago and loved that thing. This was a major step up in scanner quality and overall features when Uniden came out with this model. At the time I used it for everything except aircraft, but from everything I've read about the 780 indicates it is one the best for aircraft monitoring (among other things obviously). Uniden had the market cornered at the time when this scanner was introduced, but it was rather pricey for the time. This was the new standard in scanners.

  • I used to have a 780xlt and then a 785xlt. Those were the absolute BEST scanners I ever owned until re-banding came along and sort of handicapped things :(

I just ordered a BCD996XT and I'm anxiously awaiting it's arrival this week. I considered the Home Patrol model but opted for the 996XT instead. I already own a PSR-600 and love it but wanted to try out the 996 because I LOVE the display in this thing!

Very nice setup you have there :)

  • On the 996t are green & orange the only display colors

  • Uniden or radio shack? What one is better for digital trunking ?

  • @weewoodeal i have both and well the bearcat is more user friendly but they both rock i love both brands.

  • whats the best top new one or bottom old one ?

  • Short answer..top new one cuz it can do digitial trunked systems, but, it has been replaced by the BC996XT model.

  • im looking for a portable scanner that i can put in my car can someone tell me any good models and where i can find a scanner

  • @hitman415707 ebay craiglist etc

  • What is the Frequnsy of wisconsin Police ?

  • I don't know. I live in Connecticut. Google "Wisconsin Frequency"

  • what is the frq for the Us police dept ? wisconsin..

  • can the 785 do nfm on vhf?

for example 154.8525? or 155.0925? I've been looking to get a newer scanner that can do this my 2 meter radios don't have NFM nor any of my scanners

  • Yes it does-u just have to set the MHz step when entering a freq.

  • ok thank ya much

  • this seems weird, surely these could be used for some sort of criminal purposes?

Not saying you are a criminal, but i mean surley the police need secure radios? or criminals can listen in..

  • Well, a few PDs are starting to use encryption full time. Their are pros & cons to everthing, scanning is no different.

  • i live in norhthwest RI (Burrillville) and i have a radioshcak pro 163, do u know any freqs that i should be able to pick up , i searched online and put them in but they didnt work, im just wondering from personal experience u know that should work. thanks

  • Try radioreference-dot-com & go to the database section. I use that site ALL the time!

  • NEW! BC396XT COMING IN EARLY 2009!

  • & how much these cost?

  • The 996 is around $500 & the older 785 was $250, but you had to buy the p25 card seperate for $250 also. (surprise surprise)

  • well that's pretty affordable price. after all, you dont have to buy any additional licenses for these, or do you?..

  • Not here in CT, as these just scan and do not transmit. But definately check your state & local laws to be sure. Felons usually cannot possess scanners. (not saying you're a felon!)

  • Of course I'm not!

    Not yet...

hahaha j/k (and no intentions to become one whatsoever :))

Thank you for the info. This thing isn't that expensive in general, although at my financial situation right now it is quite a bit, but I will probably take a deeper look inside this stuff it's pretty cool.

  • question did these ones come pre programed because i think there starting to do that????

  • Yes, the 996 comes pre-programmed.

  • hey in that bearcat cant u talk to the police

  • nice schners

  • very nice setup, have the bcd396t (hand held version) myself, absolutely love it.

  • Yeah, I got the 396 before the 996, and I love it as well. If you watch the 996 closely, you can see it picking up most of the csp troops statewide. It does pretty good. If your thinking about grabbing one, do it!

  • Nice equiptment, you should see my setup.
