I've read that SOPA will be back. The people wanting this to get passed are already gearing up to try again. I doubt we've heard the last of it. They're going to keep trying to get it passed. It gets complicated. Protecting copyrights without stepping on the people who are legitimately sharing is what makes it such a tough needle to thread. Like you said, let's hope the government doesn't take it too far.
As a german and a free man, i believe in free speech but...
like in real life you can't see the internet as a law free space! esp. when it comes to sharing music and movies. if you copy your purchased CD or Movie or Software with your brother/sister and your best buddy, no prob. but you can't just upload it somewhere so other people around the world can download it for free.. It's a delicate topic but i think copyright should be respected and protected. Free speech is protected by laws too..
SOPA and PIPA suspended indefinitely.. But don;t worry. It'll be renamed, and passed at night while we sleep, and you'll never hear about it.. Internet is killing TV, radio, and has all but destroyed newspapers.. The next logical step, is to control the medium that is destroying it.. That's what this is about..
I see both sides too. I feel bad for the music and movie industry because they are losing A LOT of money. What if one day they don't have enough money to make big, fancy productions anymore? And we don't get any cool movies anymore. Then we've screwed ourselves? Lots to think about... Very interesting.
SOPA is flatly dangerous. The concept of blocking 3rd world piracy is good, but that's been so twisted by the music industry conglomerates at this point that it's not even in the picture. The bill gives them and the government powers they have no right to have, and that they'll abuse before we can blink.
As for the actors, the artists, the musicians, they gain nothing. The industry is where the gains are.
"Let's hope the government don't take it too far."? When do they not these days?
The thing is is that SOPA was vague about what is considered "pirated" to the point which even a link posted on site "A" that potentially contains pirated material on site "B" according what is currently written in SOPA could get site "A" taken down without question.
Which pretty much means someone who doesn't like a certain site could just "plant" a link that leads to pirated materials and then call them out on it and get the site taken down.
These two bills would take away even more of a citizen's rights in the name of security and safety. IF they are re-written to address ONLY the issues they are ment to, then I would reconsider.
Nearly 30Trillion later, the economy is worst. The Fed gave the EU 600B on Christmas day. What for? To switch currency so as to hold up the ponzi scheme a little longer around the world.Check it out. Google owns youtube. They have software that can listen, yes listen in on videos and censor vids just for not having rights as they see it. That said, SOPA is happening right now. Pay Attention! Free Speech? Right to bear arms?
NDAA allows the military to have sex with animals. True, unfortunately.Odam-ugh,the crack and cocaine using president also signed this act knowing it is unconstitutional. It is in line with the SOPA and PIPA. The govt has tried same thing at least 3 yrs running now. As jb says, pay attention! It is wrong! From our cars, phones(all of them),stores, you name it they r watching us.
Sick ppl.r in power. They work 4 us.They have censored many, many sites in the past 4 yrs! Pay Attention!
Here I'll show you exactly how far, since you asked so nicely. Look up "National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012". Section 1021 is particularly interesting.
If it was up to my grandma it would be censored to hell and back fer being evil. The internet is an evil tool of the devil. Anythang that didn't involve greens and beans was evil fattening or against her religion. LOL
The crazy thing is, even with all the pirated movies and music these companys are still making record profits. Its a strange matter. The internet on the whole is in grave danger of being useless because of government officials (or whatever the term is) not understanding how it works.
censor is not the answer imo.. non-union as hell.. we see how the guberment messes up everything. I dont have much respect for greedy billion dollar companies or Hollywood billionaires. Your will never stop people from doing this since most of these sites or in other countries. The internet changed the way information etc. is handled. I think there is more than enuff laws on books for suing people from rich companies. Single poor mom sued for 2 million for DL few songs in news recently. Fail..
They already shut down Megaupload the day after they suspended the vote on SOPA in the house. It's like they were planning to do this all along and were just trying to pass laws to support what the govt wants to do anyway.
Same thing with NDAA. Bradley Manning has been held in military indefinite detention for who knows how long now without a trial and he's a US citizen!
If something like SOPA or PIPA were ever passed, Anonymous would go on a rampage and shut down every single government website. It never will be passed. Anonymous flexed their muscles after they shut down Megaupload/Megavideo by shutting down the department of justice's official website and Universal Music(via a DDOS attack), among other things.
The internet is greater than the government, that will never change. Hopefully they've learned their lesson, or it will only get worse for them.
Entities like Hollywood and the record industry and Big Media for decades had everyone by the balls and heaped gigantic profits while often steering opinions in the news (not for the good of the nation) when the internet came along...people began moving away from TV news, the record industry etc in DROVES. I say screw em. Stop SOPA.
downloading off sites is often free, much of what is being pirated is being shared freely without anyone compensating from it. not all, but much. i don't think anything should be censored.
The government is always up to no good in my opinion. That said, we have got to take an interest in what is going on and not trust as we once have.
But thanks for the awareness as I did not know about this.
