I love your videos. I understand that the blade lock is what breaks when batoning with a folder. It's best to unlock the knife before doing so. Maybe the sak is well suited because it doesn't have a lock in the first place.
@wildernessinnovation Yeah, people keep telling me: "Use an axe!" I had one guy quote a knife guru from the 50's as saying that you should never use a knife for anything but cutting tasks. Well, considering the metal quality back then, I'm sure that he was right. But with modern metals, I feel that things are different. Especially with quality companies standing by their products, we have nothing to lose. Fifty years ago, you couldn't have a knife replaced as we can today.
@ScottsUtubeWorld It's a matter of being able to use what you have with you. Certainly when I'm at a regular camp I have a hatchet, an ax, and a saw. But if I out somewhere and get in a bind I need to use my knife for as many things as possible...thanks
@Dco237thEngBn That is correct, this is not intended to split logs, but just to make small material for getting a fire started. Thanks for your comment, have a great day!!
@StroggosMakron Yes the knife does have a saw blade, which I love, just wanted to show that it's easy to baton even with that knife, for making small kindling. The small wood I was working with was no problem for the knife. Thanks for the comment!!
For the larger woods it would go a lot easier if you took a shingle off of the sides to make it smaller. This may in fact be all that is necessary to get to the dry wood and then you can just make shavings directly or split the now smaller wood.
Nice work, SAK's are great knives, I carry a Rucksack.
Very good job... It's surely more work, but SAK's are indeed last resort tools sometimes... Nobody would use such a small saw to cut wood unless you don't have anything bigger. Similarly, nobody would try to baton with a SAK unless they don't have a proper large knife. However, you showed that it's possible to be done, that's what's important.
@jpjdo1212 Yes you certainly can do it with the Spartan. Keep in mind you are limited to small things, but as we show in the video, it's a very effective way to amass a nice pile of small kindling. I've taken some heat on this one, since the blade is not a locking blade, but the blade is in the wood so you are not really in any greater danger. Just do it like in the video. Enjoy your knife, and have a great day!!
@GSRGOPEDRIDER247 It is crazy in a way to baton with a non-locking blade, I wanted to illustrate however, not to be limited in thinking in a survival situation. Too many times people sit down and die with resources at hand. So even though it's unconventional it is possible and it is effective. Thanks a lot for the comment, have a great day!!
good knife. Im getting the victorinox fieldmaster wich is basically the same thing as the victorinox huntsman exept it has a phillips screwdriver and not a corkscrew.
@survivorman0824 Thanks, yeah they are hard to beat really, been perfectly satisfied with victorinox all my life, never a problem and I own lots of them. Not a replacement for a fixed blade, but I can do most of what I need to do with them. That Fieldmaster is a great knife. We use the Hunter/Camper because they fit nicely in our kits. Have a great day!!
When you wrote " yeah sure hit the handle too.... hit everything" I really had to lol.... man you give that little knife a hiding, I love it. One thing I have seen is to make yourself a wedge, start the split with your knife and then drive the wedge in..... although it does not look as much fun as your way.
The proper way with a folder is with the handle hanging along the side and you pull down on the handle while hitting the blade. This method doesn't put stress on the joint.
Great job Sir! I've never used my Huntsman (or Explorer) to do that, although it's been abused in every other way over the past 20 years and is still going strong. Let's raise a toast to Victorinox quality.

@ScottsUtubeWorld This knife works great batoning "small" stuff. Some people get a little carried away, lol. Thanks for your comment

Keep in mind that Victorinox is buying its steel from Germany. Its in truth a high quality product. Not like those cheap oversized american products

Doesn't your sak have a saw blade that could easily saw through that thickness? Seems more logical than risking snapping your main blade on the knife

It might be better to start the split with your SAK, and then finish off the split with a wooden wedge.
JustinBaker2567 1 year ago
i agree it can be used in a situation, but splitting a piece of wood in half with a non-locking blade is crazy
