  • Wow... I didn't realize how important these words, or this melody, were to me until I was reintroduced to it right now.

    Thanks for posting this.

  • This wonderful liturgical work was composed in the 16th century Ottoman Empire city of Edirne by Rabbi Shlomo Halevi Alkabetz, a Safed Kabbalist.. The author draws much of his phraseology from Isaiah's prophecy of Israel's restoration, and six of his verses are full of the thoughts to which his vision of Israel as the bride on that great Shabbat of Messianic deliverance gives rise.

Blessings to everyone of all persuasions/faiths from the old city of Samarqand!

  • Hi, beautiful song. I was actually looking for this version for a long time and am happy that I finally found it. Do you know who wrote the melody for this song? I would like to record just the chorus of this song in a video that I am doing. (I would be singing the chorus) Anyway, I think I would need a license for that though. Do you know if this melody is public domain or not??? Thanks so much and I hope to hear from you soon.

  • @rachelhyman1

    Hi Rachel

I'm happy that you finally found the version you like

I'm sorry but i don't know who worte the melody.

I think this melody is public

i wish you all the best and lufk and joy at the record

    shana tova and

    Asaph

  • @yifatne

I dont know who composed this melody.

However I have been told that this version of Lecha Dodi was first sung in the Nozyk Synagogue in Warsaw.

  • @MrEzzywezy Highly unlikely that it originated in the Nozyk, since the Nozyk had a large choir and fine professional cantors, and the custom of those choirs and cantors was to sing a thru-composed cantata-like arrangement, or, that the cantor would improvise on the strophes of the poem and the refrain would be sung by the choir and the congregation. This melody is much more likely of Israeli or Chassidic origin, and while it may be sung in Warsaw now, no way was this sung there before the SHoah

  • @rachelhyman1 I've been trying to find this version too -- guess it was not as popular as I thought! This is the way my daughter learned it in Hebrew school, so it's the one that's familiar to me too. Thank you, yifatne, for posting this!

  • @rachelhyman1 i've heard this melody sung in shul especially the refrain l'cha dodi etc.

  • @rachelhyman1 I think this song has been sung since the medieval times or longer. I don't know about other countries but I've been told that a song becomes public domain when the person who wrote it died at least 70 years ago.

  • פשוט מצמרר

  • I love Shabbat! I will sing this song next Shabbat.

  • Thank you, when my husband came back home, i asked him and he said exactly the same explanation.

    Than you for your time.

    Shabbat Shalom.
