Great song..Heard it on the post punk progressive pop party on wvhc Hofstra Univ.( I think.) College radio was great back then. So was the music scene..Amazing new music was coming out weekly. I miss those days!
I can;t get enough of this...so way out there with the best of the best...what a presence...what a track...it brings back (good) memories of eigthies London as well...vibrant and passionate.
Oi ! Oi ! DEPARTMENT S play The Wilmington Arms in London TONIGHT !!! Saturday 29th May - 69 Rosebery Ave, EC1R 4RL. 4 original members with original keyboard payer Eddie Roxy taking on the vocals... very well apparently ! on stage about 10pm

Superb. And I thought they were a one hit wonder. Really surprising that they didn't do more in the UK, perhaps 'Vic' wasn't the best choice for 1st single, given Britain's disdain for 'novelty' records. 'She Blinded Me With Science' had the same effect on Thomas Dolby's career. Great, tight band though, very impressive. I'm not a drummer but he looks pretty sharp. Thanks for another excellent YT posting.
Actually DEPARTMENT S is way more exciting than the JAM. Maybe seeing the JAM in a club in Soho back in 77 woulda been exciting...but what's the crap with all the UNION JOKES and shit...I never got that...TRANSGLOBAL EXPRESS is OK...retrospectively. DEPARTMENT S they draw a strange aura...very LONDON...seedy and exciting. I think VAUGHN sucked cocks but hey...you have to find something good to do during the long boring and endless sundays in grey Londinium...That's just as good a hobby as GOLF!
Yep, I haden't heard Dep S then but had always known they were there - if that makes sense...There is a small mention of Vaughn in a book about Lee Bowery...Also, he wrote a preface for a Terry Rawlings rare publication on the SMALL FACES and that's how I came in contact. Toulouse draws a mysterious fascination. Such a great singer!
WOW those lyrics are so premonitory with today's world!! I used to love Dept S back then and watching this clip so many years later I still LOVE them!
Fuck me this takes me back to around 81 ! I bought this on 12inch vynal & sat in my little bedroom & played it to death ! I think b-side was Monte Carlo or bust & ......... cant remember the other one ! Love this tune ! You Tube is a really good idea if this is the kind of stuff we can see ! Keep it up
they dont come much better than this, This blew my head off when i heard it. hard to believe it did very little in the UK.Its probably not the most commercial of records but god is it powerful. 10/10 top tune
Alright! Both this & "Is Vic There" - fantastic songs & great memories. I fondly remember these 45's but have never seen the videos until now. Will youtube wonders never cease?
GREAT!

Trellick towers in the background...an awesome sight...even though I prefer my Victorian terraced hse with all the detritus outside.

If my memory serves me this was the flip side to "is vic there" as the weeks went by this was the track I played

"I Want" was the 3rd Dept S single. Solid Gold Easy Action was the B-Side of 'Vic'. This single was a European Number 1.

I love discovering unknown, probably long broken up, new wave bands. "Fun" is indeed a great descriptive term.

I bought this song as a single a long time ago (the records used to be called 45's or 33's for albums). First time I've seen the video.
