Phylicia Rashad was NOT pregnant in this season. She was only pregnant in the earlier seasons. That's why they raised the counter tops. They REMODELED the entire kitchen here, just to give things a new look. She has already had her children by the episodes where the kitchen is being remodeled.

Well, this is just a theory, but I think it's because Cliff wanted to give Claire a room for herself; and once he was unable to give one too her, Clair saw the disappointment in Cliff and allowed him to change the kitchen the way he had always wanted it to be.
