A lot of the on-track footage was shot by Phil Hill in a GT-40 and other cars. Of the four principal actors in the film, one could not drive at all, one was very slow and nervous, and another (Yves Montand) scared easily so he often was towed rather than drive his car, Garner was the only real race driver. Amazing what stand-in actual race drivers can do to make things look real. Other drivers in the film: Graham Hill, Fangio, Clark, Rindt, Brabham, Gurney, Ginther, Bonnier, McLaren.
@Pihasanddunes1 I'm looking forward to RUSH in 2013. They're using the actual cars from the period. Pics are floating around of a replica James Hunt driving a McLaren M26 ( I think) around the Nordshleife.
@MrPifta its from the film 'Grand Prix' all shot around the actual 1966 Monaco Grand Prix weekend with real drivers and the films actors. It was commented by several F1 drivers that James Garner missed his calling and should consider taking up racing driving for a career!
Amazing! These men were freakin brave. Actually it was these times that gave motorsports such a bad reputation for being a dangerous sport only daredevils and fearless men would do. Kinda like thrill seekers or going into combat. Don't compare it to racing today which is very safe and rarely results in injury or death because of the safety systems put in place.
It's from the movie "Grand Prix" You should watch it sometime. It's filled with great racing footage like this, and the storyline is almost decent even.
They used to show this stuff all the time on speedvision during the weekday afternoons or late at night. narrated by a few veterans of the sport it was really cool. now those times are filled with speed trash tv like "pinks all out" or "stupid whips" ect..

Wondrous footage. If they re-made this film now, how much of this would be CGI.

@FulviaFiend James Garner has always been a race/car enthusiastic. He raced in Mexico in the Baja 1000 and also Steve McQueen.
