The bunker they give you in the academy is old gear , that's refurbished and cleaned . The week before you graduate they give you 2 new pairs of bunker gear with ur name on it for ur career and you return the used one in. This video is family day one of the last days you are there that's why that have their new gear

I think you need a residency of at least 2 years and then you can take the civil testing. Not sure but at any rate its a long process.

Man I cannot wait for this day! Can't wait for the day when I join the best and busiest Fire Dept. in the world, FDNY! The Brotherhood is unexplainable. Probably be on in 3-5 years, might do FDNY EMS as an EMT first, while I wait to turn 21, get the call, and go to Probie school!

I have never heard of it, are you sure? I'm not doubting your correct, I just think for EMS you have to apply and then you get called and have to do the tests (pysch, physical, etc.) and then get hired.

How long is your guys academy? What is the schedule?

The academy is about 3-4 weeks. The schedule is daily from about noon till 3 pm. The instructors were always late and goofing around. It kinda got annoying cause the instructors were never serious and always hung over.

I would think the FDNY would have a academy lasting 18-21 weeks, not 3 or 4......... That would be for like a lateral transfer out here. A lateral transfer is for firemen who have already completed a 18 week fire academy and are transferring to a new fire department in the area or even out of state.

The last Academy (Fire) was 23 weeks. It was Class 2 of 08. "Top of the List...Bottom of the Barrel"!

There is talk of the next one (who knows when) will be 18 weeks to save money.

I believe Brad3417 is talking about the FDNY EMS (BLS) academy 3-4 weeks...Medic being 9 months
