I was there, front row. The problem isn't the singer nor the audience. The problem is, not everyone can hear the music very well when everybody's clapping or singing in a silent moment. At a concert, if 1 person claps wrong, some others go with him, so you manage to get different clapping rhytms. Just like when the killers played all these things i've done, the crowd never manages to keep on singing "i've got soul,..." in the right rhytm.

Keep in mind also that other parts of the audience can sound like they are behind as well due to the nature of sound. If it sounds like you are exactly in unison with the other side of a very large crowd, you are actually probably behind or they are ahead -- so you sound bad to them and the whole crowd sounds especially bad to the performer.

Just keep in mind that the clapping is always worst for the artist, who hears multiple clap rhythms and they are all later than what he/she is playing.

The crowd can't keep in time because crowds ALWAYS speed up clapping as people join in. Especially when they try to clap to a track that doesn't spell out the tempo to them (although if you put a metronome to this performance you will see the tempo doesn't fluctuate much at all). Notice the crowd IMMEDIATELY begins to speed up -- the tempo is above their threshold of familiarity. It just sounds "fast" so they clap fast.

Don't blame the artist for audiences clapping like spazzes to a piano song.

EXACTLY. 90 percent of people are tempo-spastics. They often even clap off-beat. I mean the artist sometimes claps with his hands in the air, so they only have to follow him, but they manage to clap in between. I am always amazed to see those spastics.

Well if you had a brain youd know light travels faster than sound so you see something before you hear it , thats why the screens are always out of sync at a concert , to accomodate for the people at the back watchin the fuckin thing , thats why people are out of time with the clap. So these "out of time" claps youre hearing arent actually out of time if you actually went to the fuckin concert besides pickin holes in it on youtube
