@foxsux6000 true, in the way that plasma does per-pixel. But this is / was still a big leap. You could think of it as low-resolution HDR (in that it's regional-pixels rather than per-pixel)
@geoffrichards you would want to be able to shine a beam of light at a user, none of this can do that.(a example of that is Lord Of The Rings in a Cinema, where you go from deep black to a pinpoint of light to extreme brightness)
Pause somewhere, 1:05 for example. Compare the display on the left with the one on the right. There is quite a difference in the color. BRIGHTSIDE's display has much deeper blacks and brighter/lighter whites.
You can tell the Brightside owns in real life. The camera that captured these TV's can't handle the highlights on the BrightSide because they are actually BRIGHT. You can also tell that the blacks go much deeper.
Plasma sucks ass. When it starts lookin YELLOW after 2 yrs then say something. Cant even play video games PLASMA. DLP is way better then plasma and lcd. Feel sorry for u plasma and lcd owners who will be throwing away your tv in 4-5 years. Whats the use of having a flat panel if your going to put on a STAND??? LOL stupid people. Just to say u got a flat panel? LOL. DLP rules. Bye.
This technology is now known as Dolby Contrast, and the superior Dolby Vision (coming soon).
You can also search for "Local Dimming" which is what Samsung and others call it.

@geoffrichards that's not true HDR, we need displays which can output per-pixel lighting (no LCD will ever do)

Now that Dolby bought Brightside we will not see HDR LCD displays for many years. :(
Dolby wants to sell first the stoke of LDR LCD's that has in the market right know.

The one at the bottom is the direct feed from the Xbox 360 and is used as a comparison to the two LCDTVs filmed

that true black is really nice, but what is the bottom one? A direct feed from an Xbox360?
