  • good videos man

  • @mysciencenow ... Thanks.......Donald

  • I love this guys video's I have watched darn near everyone of them. I decided to plant on my back 2 acres instead of mowing it this year. Im planting sweet corn and plan to sell it to help pay for my sons college. We love the bayou gardner keep it up!!!

  • @4782522 ... If I were doing that I would plant in blocks about 2 weeks apart so it all doesn’t come in at the same time. I’d also break the corn in the morning and try to sell it by that afternoon. Glad you enjoy the videos and wish you the best of luck this season…….Donald

  • Your video is enjoyable and your instructions are very laymans language. Thankyou so much for sharing!!!

  • @InAllFun ... Glad you enjoy the videos and you're welcome......Donald

  • Thanks Donald, that was great.

  • @clairesallotment ... Glad you enjoyed the vid.......Donald

  • Sir, I wanted to say thank you and God bless you for posting this video. I sincerely appreciate the time and effort you took showing everyone how to do this. Ive been trying to follow my guide that came with my survival seed kit and was wondering if I got this right. For corn, you leave the ears on the stalk even after the others have been picked, pick it off the stalk after its dried out, then break the cob and take the seeds?

  • @KesslersCross … That’s correct, I let the corn mature on the stalks. Once the ears have dried out then harvest the seeds for the next crop. You would do the same if using it for animal feed……Donald

  • @webcajun Great! Thank you so much Donald. In my instructions it said at the end of the season tie a paper bag around the cobs I guess to help dry it out, then pluck it and pick the cernals out. I like your method much better. I will have to try that for my horses too. Around what time of years do you actually pick the cobbs that you will be using for seed?

  • @KesslersCross … That would depend on the variety but most can be harvested in late summer……Donald

  • Was thinking about getting one of those emergency seed banks. Then I realized, even if I have heirloom seeds, how do I harvest the next generation? Thanks for this very helpful video.

  • @boazn8 …The key to harvesting seeds is allowing the vegetable to mature before collecting the seed. Some form a seed head which then dries other are collected from inside the vegetable……Donald

  • @webcajun Yes, I will be going through the list of seeds I'm getting and document exactly how to do each one through videos like yours. Though I'm sure going to wish other videos were all as good a quality.

  • @boazn8 I just bought some myself and am checking out similar videos as this to save mine. Most companies I think give you a guide but I like videos better. I know most emg seed banks cost around 120 to 140 I think but I og mine at my patriot supply dot com (all one word) Im not a salesman I promise but there packs do have a lot of varity and only cost 40 bucks for one kit. I dont think there are as many seeds in it, but I got 3 kits for 120, check em out I really liked everything they had.

  • Good vid

  • @GriffinElliot ...Thanks.....Donald

  • You're an awesome guy Donald! thank you for this video. It would be cool to have you come to my place and critique my garden and greenhouse haha.

  • @xchrisforbushx …Might could help in the garden but the GH I’m not too sure about. : ) ….Donald

  • Thanks Donald! Really helped my mom get more corn seed from her garden

  • @Fin3cy6 ...As long as it's OP / Heirloom you can save the seeds.....Donald

  • HeyDonald, been watching for quite awhile .Just found how to get on youtube with little ,I meana lot of help from my better half. I was wondering how you store your heirloom seeds? Oh and your right Bobby sure knows how his gardening. Thanks for the info....later

  • @TheSemperfidude …Keep them in a dry, cool, dark place inside the house. For long term storage I’d say put them in vacuum sealed jars…..Donald

  • wats up big don, can u make a video on gutting a chicken or rabbit

  • Great video as always Don. I'm glad to see you have the preparedness mindset. Your garden skills are fun, but also could be a life saver one day. You also said that saving the corn seed reminded you of feeding the chickens when you were growing up. I recently bought 10 hens (No roosters) and I get free eggs now. Feed garden scraps to the chickens. Fill their water and feeders (5 Gal) once a week, and that's it. You should get some! You have room, and plenty of scraps! :-) Tim (Texas)

  • @THEGARDENERGUY …Hey Tim, I’ve thought about raising a few chickens but keep putting it off. The initial investment is the hold back. Knowing me I’d want a large chicken yard and an all metal house. Over kill I know. : )…..Donald

  • Hi Donald, How do you deal with racoon? i got some that are eating the corn that i have left for my seed ....... %?%?&%$?&$% :(

  • @Alprofight … You can try spreading moth balls in the middles of the rows. If that doesn’t work an electric fence may to the trick…..Donald

  • I had one tomato plant that gave me 2 lb tomatoes. They were huge! I'm going to save the seeds from the best one. These are the tomatoes that are planted with afternoon shade. The ones that got more sun didn't get as large but still did well.

  • @prettyroads … I like planting in full sun, seems to do better in my situation. Saving our Heirloom / OP seeds is something we should all take a big interest in. It just makes sense in this day and age…….Donald

  • I've believed in saving seeds for awhile, now. They are getting more expensive and we should all learn how to garden. I just spent 10 dollars on 1 1/2 lbs of hamburger! We need to get back to feeding ourselves from our own gardens.

  • @prettyroads ... I hear you on the price of groceries. I don’t mind eating leftovers so with that 1 ½ pound of ground meat, a couple of lbs. of peas out the garden I could eat well for 3-4 days……Donald

  • Awesome information! Thank you :)

  • Great video........Thanks

  • @Fielderfarms ... You're welcome......Donald

  • Hahaha feeding the chickens!

  • @Hamish121212 … You’d go in the corn crib, get some ears and shell em for the chickens. Sometimes you’d run it through a corn crusher to break it up for em…..Donald

  • I can't find it - is there a "Title" I can search? Thanks

  • @spiritartman ... Check in my YouTube Favorites.......Donald

  • Thanks!! I'm looking into a Rat Terrier - Can you do a video on Tomato seeds please. I have local neighbors with great tomatoes and corn - now that I know how to dry the corn need to save some tomato seeds !! thanks!! you ever need a hand on your farm?

  • @spiritartman ... There's a real good video on saving tomato seeds in my "favorites". Check it out.......Donald

  • Thanks for the video.

I enjoyed it. Willy does his part too I guess.

Videos like this does a tremendous amount of good.

    Please keep it up.

    God bless you.

  • @czyhrs ... Glad you enjoyed it and you're welcome.......Donald

  • good video

  • @sugerbear520 ... Thanks.......Donald

  • U can also use the corn seeds for pop corn

  • @lisareidmitchell ... If it's a pop corn variety. Google for pop corn seed I'm sure they have em out there.......Donald

  • can you do a video on saving Tomato Seeds?

  • @spiritartman ... Look in my favorites there's a good one there. I did one last year but never posted it to YouTube.....Donald

  • Thanks again! what kind of Dog was that? "Willy?" Thanks for the tip. I"m going to the local Farm to buy a few ears of corn. Can I dry out and put into a bag for storeage til next year?

  • @spiritartman ... Willy is a very rare breed I call “a little brown dog”. He’s a mix of all kinds so I wouldn’t even try to guess. I would think it best to let the ears dry on the stalks then harvest for seed……Donald

  • I so hear what you're saying! thanks for the great videos! I know I'm not crazy, it helps seeing someone else who thinks the same way. Especially when most of even my family and friends don't quite get what's going on, even tho it's right in front of their faces if they'd only look...

  • @WALLEYEHAMMER1911 ... It’s becoming obvious what’s happening and what very likely could happen as a result…..Donald

  • If you plant open- pollinated seeds next to non-pollinated seeds will it mess up the open- pollinated seeds?

  • @MrMunchiemo ... Yes.....Donald

  • Hi Web Cajun,

I have a question,,,Is a pressure cooker and a pressure canner the same thing, or two different things?

  • @HEAVENCENTSBLOG ... Not sure if there is a difference but I do know you can pressure cook in a pressure canner…..Donald

  • looked like pop corn....made me hungry so i made a batch lol

  • @TheClownCentral ...lol......Donald

  • @sirdevlon ... We moved to the city when we first got married, stayed 8 years and hated it the whole time. Had enough of the foolishness, moved back home and never looked back. You couldn’t pay me enough to leave again……Donald

  • Goal accomplished! You got me to thinking -- good idea to get open-pollinated. And, as you said, even if this skill is never needed, it's still good to do. Thanks!

  • @ShushLorraine … Good part about it, doesn’t cost a thing and it puts you so far ahead of the game. You will never have to depend on anyone or large company with GMO products to feed the family. Just can’t lose……Donald

  • @sirdevlon so sad.. Time now to make new memories for the younger generations. Maybe they won't leave. Thanks for saying this.

  • man of his word i remember you saying last year you were going more to open pollinated i live by the way of thinking nature rules when humans mess with plant genes in some bio lab and have snake oil sales men promising higher yields and more nutrition which that already blew up in monsantos face its smart to go back to OP seeds ill never put trust in any corporation/government

  • @MajorRager76 ... I agree 100%. Very well said.....Donald

  • So, let me see if I got this right.... If I buy some "open germination" seeds, I can replant those? Those aren't hybrid? Non-hybrid is very expensive online. I love my silver queen here in NC, but can't find anything like it non-hybrid. All Walmart/Home Depot, even Tractor Supply sells is hybrid stuff. Or..... am I entirely wrong on this?

  • @jarhed1964 ... Save OP / Heirloom seeds. You never know what you'll end up with saving seeds from a hybrid......Donald

  • @webcajun Thanks Don!

  • @webcajun Thanks Don! Found some online!

  • I'm glad somebody got enough rain on their corn this year. :(

I planted the corn heirloom Stowells Evergreen this year, but pretty much all of it got burned up in the south MS sun.

I think over the past couple years i've learned to plant corn as early as possible so it can get started before the drought season comes. Seems the rain has dried up for the past two year from april to june, then starts up again later in the summer. Could just be bad luck though.

  • @citizen762 ... Your best corn crop will be the one planted early in the spring. Still have moisture, not too many bugs and not as hot.......Donald

  • Hey Donald.. i hope ya garden has done good this year.. i have had some sucess with mine.. hey how do u recomend saving seeds.? any speical way or things i should know.? i have Okra, Squash, an Tomato seeds. Thanks for any help.

  • should seeds be kept in the freezer in a Tupperware box? I ask because I saw another guy doing that. I had plenty of seeds in a sack from this summer I didnt use will they be good next year? Should I freeze them?

  • @shartne In my seed saving book I have it says virtual all seeds retain viability the best when frozen after having been dried appropriately. Says all corn varieties will germinate well up to 10 years if kept frozen. I test mine now and then and so far I've had 3 year old freezer kept corn germinate at 90%. Not bad.

  • @citizen762 Ok then I will freeze my seeds then. Thanks.

  • Thank you for this much needed information. I was sick last year at harvest time and some of my corn turned to seed. Mine was just by accident but i have the seed anyway. I wish I'd had seen this before I saved my seeds, you did it the easy way. I never thought of breaking them in half ;- )

  • @2Bibleppl ... Feeding the chickens when I was growing up didn’t require breaking em. They got all the kernels, good and bad. lol……Donald

  • @webcajun

Educate the masses on the best and easiest ways to make it in the lean times and you've done your part. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge with us. Blessings

  • Thank You : )

  • @wideawake73 ... You're welcome.......Donald

  • thank you

  • @DRACENA000 ... You're welcome.......Donald

  • Man, I really enjoy watching your videos , thanks for making them. look forward to more in future.

  • @carolinaprepper ... I’ll soon be adding a “Guns & Garden” series I’m hoping people will like. Just seems like the two go together……Donald

  • Heirloom is the way to go.Thank you for your excellent videos.

  • @marthale7 ... I started really looking at heirlooms a couple of years ago. Finding the right varieties for your area is important.......Donald

  • good to know there are other preppers close by.

  • @troyr322 ... There’s lot of things people can do without costing a thing, this is one of em…..Donald

  • Point made Donald. I had no ideal how to harvest the seeds from corn. To let it dry on the cob. I bought my 1st corn seed packet in spring.

  • @Allen2045 … Just like a farmer does, he lets it dry in the field before harvesting……Donald

  • Great tip. Thanks!!

  • @loislaney23 ... You're welcome......Donald

  • Donald, how long do seeds last if put in proper storage?

  • @FIyingPengwin ... Onions have the shortest storage of about 1 year. The rest range from 3-5 according to the experts. Save more than you need in case you have a crop failure you’ll still have plenty to replant and / or for next season……Donald

  • @Gardensandcabins ... Mine averaged between 3-4 ft.......Donald

  • The video accomplished its purpose... I'm with you on the state of affairs today, Donald. No such thing as being too prepared- and it IS fun :)

  • @Jimaera ... Never know what they'll come up with next and it's usually not good.......Donald

  • @webcajun You're telling me, lol... I need to buy a bigger plot of land.

  • hey i found a nice site for seed: heirloomseeds com. they sell seeds like you've talk about but i don't know if this is a good comp?

  • hey i found a nice site for seed: heirloomseeds com. they sell seeds like you've talk about but i don't know if this is a good comp?

  • @Alprofight ... Never dealt with em......Donald

  • Yep your right Donald, we never know what's coming up with all those governements in the world and big multinationnal Company. Keeping the seed is all i have in mind each year for next year, and it's not difficult too. Very important to have good seeds too like you've said. See ya on the forum! TheNorthPatate

  • @Alprofight ... You never know what those idiots will come up with next and it’s usually not in our best interest…..Donald

  • Thank you, Donald, for your 2 cents on saving seeds and food security. I won't get onto my soapbox here, but so many people still don't believe that it's a problem.

Hopefully next year, I'll have a nice long row of corn in my backyard, with enough for fresh eating and freezing, and a little extra for seed.

  • @douberuneimu ... I agree 100%. It's a good thing to learn even if you don't need it later on......Donald

  • Great topic Donald. I also save seeds for similar reasons, and also to keep costs to a minimum. I would very much like to hear more from you on this topic. -Eric

  • @ELHIEGER1 ... I've done several videos on it this year and plan to do more next.......Donald

  • Can you tell me a good place to get the seeds? I've never gardened before so I'm pretty clueless here. I wasn't sure what open pollenated meant until now, so thanks for that information. We are in a severe drought here in Texas so gardening right now is not optimal and in my neighborhood there is a watering ban. However I'd like to have some seeds for next year. Any info you can give me would be very much appreciated.

  • @whimberly1 ... A place I like is Morgan County Seeds......Donald

  • Real Great Video Donald! Have you found any OP broccoli that heads up nice?

  • @knyquol ... Not yet......Donald

  • @webcajun Me neither, I'm hoping Fedco seeds will get "3304LM Limba Broccoli " back in for 2011 they are sold out now but it looks promising, I love packman but it'd be such an easy seed to save if you can find a good one!

  • @knyquol ... I Googled em and the only other place I found to get em is located in the UK......Donald

  • Thank you for taking the time and teaching the very worth while education that people actually need! Your awsome!

  • @wheelori814 ... You're very welcome......Donald

  • Awesome vid. Hoping to save some corn next year. Now I got some tips on how to do it!

  • @IllumTheMessage ... Think about saving other OP vegetables as well......Donald

  • great video, got me to thinking bout saving my own, thanks.

  • @hogkillerjp ... Now's the time to start.....Donald

  • Always enjoy your vids........

  • @FantomShooter ...Thanks......Donald

  • Thankyou for taking your time and doing another video for us! I loved this lesson and has definitely got me thinking!:)

  • @Nerdybudy19 ... Glad it helped.....Donald

  • I really enjoy these types of videos. lol

Its like all the "neighbors" drop by and just sit n' watch what you're doin'. You're right saving seeds is a good idea... its fun and it saves money too.

But I think I bought the wrong kind of corn seeds for next year. Its I think maybe that GMO stuff, I don't know. Silver Queen?

Oh well. :-) I like sweet corn so I'll have to find a good sweet one.

    Cute li'l Willie! Happy Puppy!

  • @gardenvespers777 ... I don't think Silver Queen is GMO, you'll be ok.......Donald

  • excellent information! thank you.

  • @underworldclassroom ... You're welcome.......Donald

  • Excellent video. Have you ever tried Country Gentleman? That is another good tasting silver O.P.

  • @jerseyrandy ... Never tried it, may give it a shot. Thanks.......Donald

  • Thanks as usual your videos are always wonderful to watch

  • @maldonvic ... You're very welcome......Donald

  • Love your videos. Just a question do you do any thing with the cobs when you get the seeds off it I hear they are really good in the worm bed?

  • @jamisonbrooks ... My worm bed got some cobs along with the husk. They seem to like em........Donald

  • I tried to grow some popcorn (the strawberry popcorn) and it didn't come up at all. :( I will try a different corn next year.

  • @twbigdogsgirl ... Watering seeds in is very important......Donald

  • You said that 90% of your garden is in open pollination crop. How do you handle cross pollination. I've always heard that cucurbits cross pollinate and if you are not careful to hand pollinate and you then save the seed they will not run true. This would probably be true of other genus as well. How say ye?

  • @gloorbit … Either plant only one variety or space out the plantings so they don’t cross…….Donald

  • @webcajun So, bees can travel a ways, and the wind does what it does. How far away would you quarantine each genus? 200 ft, quarter mile? The reason those two numbers come up is because I've heard both and the larger does not make sense for me with a mere two acres and with neighbour's gardens just a tad away.

  • @gloorbit … Do the research, each vegetable requires different distances. Some people use a crop cover to help prevent the cross, otherwise do the best you can……Donald

  • Nice info. Unfortunately, my sweet corn didn't do well at all... so no chance of saving seed. Hopefully next year!

  • @TheOntarioGardener ... High winds are our biggest problem......Donald

  • Thank you great information.

  • @barnett1129 ... You're welcome......Donald

  • can you save the seeds on golden queen corn and silver queen?

  • @usc5299 ...You can save seeds on any non-hybrid....Donald

  • As always Donald I love your garden, and videos. Showing and educating us is the most wonderful thing anyone can do. When I was growing up trying to earn a living in Aircraft, it is amazing how much one forgets, or does'nt know about self sufficiency. I think I'm going to have to buy some of your DVD's cause thats a natural for lowering my BP. Thanks God Bless ,,,, Gary Farmall

  • @HuntGaryHunt ... Hey Gary, The video hopefully planted a seed. lol…..Donald

  • From the time of your edible harvest to the time you picked these dried for seed how long did you have to wait? Thanks again for the effort. Great video.

  • @waypastprime ... We had a very hot dry year so only aboout 1 1/2 months........Donald

  • well said Brother, I been watching you since before you were a rock star :) God Bless and ty for all your videos

  • @MarinePrepper ... Rock Star? : ) You're very welcome.......Donald

  • @webcajun lol well...... Rock Star, yes you and several others I have been watching for a long time got really famous on here is all i mean it was a complemet in a way this is a new account my other is subscribed to you also, I plan to do some videos at some point from this one, I just suffer from video diability :) for now anytways

  • @MarinePrepper ... I’m really surprised how quickly the channel grew since those first two videos I posted back in 2007. I never would have guessed people would want to watch an old Cajun playing in the dirt. lol……..Donald

  • I always enjoy your videos Donald; thanks for another great one. That looked like fun I wish I was there helping you.

  • @prairiepatch ... Working together will be the key if hard times are in our future......Donald

  • Thank you for that video. Good food for thought... Hopefully we all start thinking this way.

  • @255sage … I could very well be wrong but there are too many indicators that we may be headed for hard times. If so I think we should be prepared or at least have an idea how to do things…….Donald

  • @webcajun No don,t get me wrong we are headed for harder times. I show some good things to know how to do also. Thanks again.

  • This will probably become a very important topic down the road. It would be very depressing to have a huge premium garden space, years in the making, with nothing to plant in it.

Thanks for sharing the "how to".

  • @bar50 ... This is really nothing new, that’s how many folks did it years ago. The economy may force many to go back to the old ways and it won’t only be in gardening. Glad you enjoyed……Donald

  • Of Course it was helpful. You always are. Love any peek I can get of your garden. It is beautiful. I have a small horse farm and have always had a small vegetable garden. My garden is about 3 times larger now due to you. I have the same tractor you have and now am planning on buying a plow for it to make the garden even larger. Thanks Donald. You are a wonderful mentor.

  • @Hoovesandpaws61 ... Glad you enjoy the vids, hope they give you ideas you can use. Room + tractor = larger garden everytime. : ) ......Donald

  • Another great video! :)

  • @baddogonline ... Thanks......Donald

  • thx for posting...i just got into saving seeds for future use....im still not sure about how getting non GMO seeds from the stores,

  • @daretohaveorangehair ... Look for the heirloom varieties......Donald

  • I have a lot of room so I'm going to do an open pollinated corn and about three patches of 15x10 rows

  • @123pivot456 ... To save seed makes sure you only plant one variety or space out the plantings......Donald

  • good man, only heirloom, non gmo is the only way to go!!

I like your style, good health and long life!

  • @KingRyltar ... Thanks......Donald

  • @webcajun thanks Don
