@jdoolsiu that team was ASS though. Worthy was done, Van Exel wasn't ready yet. Vlade was OK. Who else did they have besides a bunch of role players and castoffs? They drafted Eddie Jones and signed Ced Ceballos after that year, and Van Exel stepped up and they made a big jump. Magic didn't have much to work with when he was coach.
@jdoolsiu I'm Japanese-American, therefore I HATE the Celtics and Jazz. I'm Seattle-born, and a Sonics and Blazers fan. Anyway, the Lakers went 0-10 combined against Seattle and Portland!! Unheard of!! Any team that gets swept in the regular season by Seattle AND Portland, suffers what I call the "Northwest Ignominy" that season.
We'll never know if he sucked at coaching or not. The players back then were all about "me". A team-oriented man like Magic can't get a bunch of individuals, who are only concerned with their numbers, to play as a team.
James Edwards sandwich clobbered and no call 0:07 .....Christie with a little reach and WILSON gets the call? No wonder Magic was calling the ref out, that was just inconsistent bullshit.
I think that was Spud Webb colliding with him in midair...tough to make a baseline turnaround when another human being collides with you like that. Oh, and when you're James Edwards with nothing in the tank :-)
Easy to miss in the was how great of a commentator Chick was. "..the only thing he'll save him is more fines and he can afford those..." there'll never be another
NO...I think he sucked...but his players are good...they say players as coaches aren't good...I think magic was OK maybe sucked but he was a GREAT player...more than great actually...but he is NOT remembered as a coach
He wasn't a good coach because he didn't have the patience to be a coach. They say great players do not end up being good/great coaches. Because they have such high standards that their players usually can't meet.
The only great player that was a good coach was Larry Bird.He lead Indiana to the finals in 2000.He lasted 3 years.Magic quit a few games after this.If Magic had Larry Bird's team I think he still would have quit after a few games.
True!To be honest with you Magic had a bunch of All Stars as well playing for him. These Lakers were a good team they played their butts off but they could never compare to the Showtime Lakers.Magic has way too high standards. He expects the Lakers to be winning Championships even when that organization was at a rebuliding phase
Wow thats just Harsh I mean Waht kind Of Coach that was in the Nba Smileing in all 82 games Of the Season and now he just makes him self out of A joke
He went 5-11 as a coach (for the first time)...I gotta give him props for one thing though - he didn't abandon the Lakers when they sucked. After Showtime, you had a crusty James Worthy, slow Byron Scott, Vlade Divac (speaks for itself), Sedale Threatt...etc.
Scott was gone by this time. He played in Indiana during the 94 season. By 94, the only remaining member of the 88 championship team was James Worthy.
Well if you wanna get technical, that's cool. But 93-94 was Rambis' first year back with the Lakers since the 87-88 season. When he returned he was a part time assistant coach that really only suited up when they needed a body.

i agree with magic. they hacked edwards and didnt call it, then wilson goes for a layup, gets slightly tapped and the cocksucking ref calls it.

LOL ricepoper that was the most ridiculous question I've ever heard of. OF COURSE HE WAS NOT. If he was he would be still coaching today.

Yeah Bird had a team with all-stars basically in Indiana from 1997-2000. Bird was a good coach but is a terrible GM.
