I'll tell you now, holding on so long just for the kids can hurt them just as much as it's hurting you. My mom's doing that and the youngest is only 3 years old. My mom's held on for almost 21 years and it's hard watching her do it, knowing that she's going to keep doing it.

In the end it's up to you, but out of personal experience being the child, I can tell you that we're not stupid -we can see right through it and if our mom's aren't happy, we aren't, either.

At the risk of sounding heartless, however, one has to wonder if things might have gone differently for the woman in the song had she ever bothered, "saying so to Daddy," before jumping ship. I love this song it really helped me through a difficult time when my mom left my dad. I was 18 at the time, my brother was 13 and he took it quite hard. He couldn't understand why mom left us. It took me a while but i forgave my mom. this song really helped me realize why my mom left.

The song means a lot to Dolly. Her father cheated many times on her mother. Actually Dolly has four brothers and sisters her father had with other women. She also sings about that subject in another song called "Daddy" from 1969.
