Is that pretty standard on a rack? New to the rack system. I order a Engl E850/100 power amp and E530 Preamp. Anyother items I should getting, lol. Big time noob.
If the guitar in the intro is from that rig then i say its worth it. but I run Morgan AC20, giga delay w/ tap temp. tubescreamer, tuner, volume pedal and my original 72 tele deluxe.
@brandon9271 definitely much better than creed. I made up my mind that I disliked Alter Bridge because I thought they were Creed 2.0... but then I gave in and downloaded blackbird... OMG. Pure awesome. \m/
So I was checking out your rig, looks pretty sweet! I was wondering if you could pass on any tips on or could point me in a direction on how to set one up... I already have most of the components I'm going to use but not really sure if I have it set up in the optimal order? If you could help in any way it would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!!!
@Cmmallinson one of the all time heaviest guitar tones I've heard in a 'rock verse' was in Black Sabbaths 'the Wizard' ....considering all he was using was a road beaten 50 watt Laney tube head with a cheap treble booster pedal shows that great tone is possible without racking muliple individual components however a rack of high quality components with digital switching allows you huge flexibility by instantly having hundreds of 'self made' patches available on command.
im not being a smartass here... but can someone please tell me what the point of a rack tuner is!?? like they'd cost a fair bit, why dont you just use a cheap pedal tunner? thanks
@Cmmallinson not what i was saying. i was just saying the fact thtat he didnt have the knowledge of the general concept means he's most likely a beginner i wasn't trying to "talk shit" i was just saying my point of view.
@ryan4951 nah, its all good i worded it a little too violently i'd suppose just making an observation honestly that was my form of a question sort of lol
Slightly off topic but i dont suppose you know if thee's a master 'reset' for the DTR 2000? Got a display problem and cant see the light strobe or the string note indicator ...
@tylerdwells Some one explained it to me like this one time...."If you took you favorite amp with on board fx's and everything else and replaced some of components you didn't like and replaced theme with what you did but intern you had to leave the amp apart that is a basic rack system. He had everything a normal amp has.
@tylerdwells Basically all it is another way to organize your preamps and effects in a rackmount system, it keeps everything in order and keeps everything neater. in regards of plugging in and playing, you dont have a shitload of guitar heads and pedals theyre more portable and are simpler to set up
its exactly the same... the only difference is that the counterparts of a head are exposed (preamp-power amp)... additionally you can have a WIDE variety of sounds with racks....and of course you have the opportunity to move around stuff or change preamps...or even have more than one... But basically the principle is the same with just pluging in a combo and playing...
basically if you wanna play a gig with many different sound colors you need GEAR GEAR....racks are verastile
@rebellionson Kind of depends on the sound you want to go for. Classic death metal is a JCM 800 with a Boss overdrive with a super hot pick up. You can get that early Cannibal Corpse tone. Or if you want an old school Swedish death metal tone, you use again, a JCM 800 with a Boss heavy metal pedal. It'll give you that Entombed OR Dismembered sound. Depends how you set the EQ sound. Or if you want an early Obituary or Celtic Frost sound, you use a Proco white labeled Rat Pedal.
@GabrielKore nah his rig is really nice but it's not quite that much it's actually more like $4500-$5000 usd my dream rig amp, cab, pedals not even including guitars is like $6800 usd but it would be amazing
@southernmisfit hey, a preamp basicly makes the tones improves the sound before it hits the main section of the amp, and a power amp powers the speakers (in this case his 212 mesa rectifier cab
lol my carvin v3 is midi! and it smokes mesa in the bang for the buck department, and has more features and none of the mesa fizzzzzzzz! i know because i have both! triple recs own with the clean channel tho...
Big whoop. The bad thing about your preamp is you can't switch it via MIDI. The Triaxis is a million times better.... I can switch everything with the press of a button. Can you? no.... Also, get rid of your floor board gear or buy a patch mate dummy.
i still dont understand what the signal processor does. Also what is the diffrence between teh rack gera like the tc multi effect than say pedals? or does rack gear just look neater
@utubecenseorstruth it just has more effects and different sounds. those that he cant get out of the tc electronic he uses pedals for. looks neater too. idk though, different reasons because of sounds mostly
His power amp is in the case, its actual a ton easyer because almost your entire signal change is right there already hooked up when you plug in just add a couple 4X12 cabs (best for metal in my opinion for extended bottom end) and your favorite B.C rich / Fender
if your goal is to play almost exactly the same kinda stuff for every track of your record, then do what AC/DC does and buy a marshall and an SG (or LP to be uber generic) and just plug in and go. But almost every great guitarist has found the value of plenty of effects... not that ya have to go to the extremes of the edge but plenty of natural sounding guys (311's Tim Mahoney) have tons of effects at their disposal.. its all about having good taste (which Vai doesnt)
A preamp is (in very basic form) a small amplifier that amplifies an input signal (such as the signal sent from an electric guitar's pickups) to "line level" for use by the power amp, which amplifies the signal to push the speakers.
Preamps are also often used to process the signal. In the guitar world circuitry is often introduced for EQ and clipping effects (overdrive and distortion).
In racks, you can pin point and alter almost any nuance for a better product sound.
In a head, they give you a preamp power amp and sometimes noise gate all in one.
Why not choose for yourself which power amp works best, which preamp works best, noise gate etc... throw in a 15 or even 30 band eq, most heads don't even have that.
oh right. i never really found a need for all that crazy excess effects stuff...just a lead, fuzz pedal and tube amp is all i need...
i never really got why people used power and pre amps in a rack and all that stuff, doesnt it start to sound TOO perfect? like, almost digital and fake?
No. A "digital" sound is the description of imperfection. Literally, digital takes samples from a signal, processes it, and recreates it. If you have a "digital sound", it means you've lost signal, not perfected it.
An amp has pre amps and a power amp in it, they're just not rack-mounted and not separated.
Pedals are much harder to switch than a midi controlled rack unit. One press of a foot switch can change a hundred different parameters in a rack system. That's impossible with pedals.
ye i see what ur getting at, but i just mean that someone like hendrix who had the simplest rig ever, has a much more natural and raw sound than someone like steve vai who has all this rack stuff...to me steve vai's guitar sound sounds almost 'overproduced'...like they tried too hard to get a perfect sound, and because of that it sounds fake...i cant really explain it well lol
I see what you mean. It's just the effects... reverb, delay, chorus, harmonizers and such.
Some people like them some people hate them. To me it's all about context. I like effects, but they can absolutely be overused and, as a guitarist friend of mine once said, "clutter up your sound."
So, yeah, you're not alone in your thinking.
However, rack-mounted power amps and preamps aren't what makes the "overproduced" sound. It's the effect's that'll do it... in pedal or rack-mount form. :]
well sometimes its just the fact that one amp that has pre and power combined can't give you the sound that you want- the tone that's in your head. To you Steve Vai's tone may sound overproduced, but too him, its the greatest tone ever.
it just gives you more options over the sounds. You say you want a tube amp, well with a rack you can choose the preamp and power amp section seperately.. theres nothing digital and fake about it, unless you run it through some fx that make it that way (which you can do with a regular amp head)
Nice rig but this video is like a chick who buys herself some new tits.If you cant see the finished product, who cares! You shouldve made a video so we could hear the the rig.Looks cool but....
Hes got a pre-amp, which makes the actual tones you here. (Mesa Boogie Recto Pre Amp)
Hes got a effects processor for all his effects (TC Electronics G-Major)
Hes got a Signal Processor (BBE Sonic Maxamizer)
Then a power amp that powers it and sends it to the speakers. Pretty Simple rig compared to some other stuff Ive seen. I believe the simpler is it, the better.
how about changing your channels and everything with a push of a button? you just need a midi foot controller plug it in the g major .... and it will change everything at once :p
because the g-major has a slight delay that fucking blows.
instead it would make more sense to send the amplifier and g-major to a central bob bradshaw device to simultaneously switch the effects with the channel you want, or nix either one of them seperate. definately dont want to control the preamp right off the g-major - laggy as hell. instead i just run my footswitch to my 5150 II and my effects rocktron pedal all to the floor seperately.. greater control and change effects before songs.
ok for all those people who question my prices, those were the only ones I happened to find on the internet at that time on that day so yes you can probably find better deals on here - so post them!
Ditch the BBE. Anyone who hasn't played with one extensively will assume it betters the tone. A/B testing with both of my rigs proved otherwise. It chokes off the sound and makes everything sound distant. Gets buried in the mix. Happens with both my 5150 and Cobra.
Trust me. Play with it, play without it. Really listen. There is absolutely no need for it. You cut better in a mix without it.

That shit look confusing and complicated
SchecterMat 2 years ago
not really, ill break it down for you...
I believe the simpler is it, the better.
vXvLETHALvXv 2 years ago
Whats the most complicated one you seen?
SchecterMat 2 years ago
hmm, people like John Petrucci, James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett, most all famous touring guitarists.
vXvLETHALvXv 2 years ago
How much invested?

why dont you go over your pedal board? i see a Fulltone OCD, a tube screamer, expression pedal of some sort... what else?
eeefooleee 2 years ago
Fulltone OCD, Boss SD-1, Ibanez TS-9, Xcotic BBPreamp, Crybaby and a powerblock of some sort.
And there is one pedal up there next to the BBPreamp that im not sure of what it is, but it looks kind of like the AC-Booster.

mitchgnr 2 years ago 3
how about changing your channels and everything with a push of a button? you just need a midi foot controller plug it in the g major .... and it will change everything at once :p
rockerboy1989 2 years ago
because the g-major has a slight delay that fucking blows.
instead it would make more sense to send the amplifier and g-major to a central bob bradshaw device to simultaneously switch the effects with the channel you want, or nix either one of them seperate. definately dont want to control the preamp right off the g-major - laggy as hell. instead i just run my footswitch to my 5150 II and my effects rocktron pedal all to the floor seperately.. greater control and change effects before songs.

ok for all those people who question my prices, those were the only ones I happened to find on the internet at that time on that day so yes you can probably find better deals on here - so post them!
jbibanezdude4 2 years ago
I would rather have a demonstration of how it sounds than watch a video with somebody else as a backing track.
FAIL!
mojavecat 2 years ago
This guy has quite a few videos of him playing through these. Check them out.
jamesteek03 2 years ago 2
Ditch the BBE. Anyone who hasn't played with one extensively will assume it betters the tone. A/B testing with both of my rigs proved otherwise. It chokes off the sound and makes everything sound distant. Gets buried in the mix. Happens with both my 5150 and Cobra.
Trust me. Play with it, play without it. Really listen. There is absolutely no need for it. You cut better in a mix without it.
UpstateEG51 2 years ago
It all depends... for recording mostly maximisers arent that good and an eq is better, but in many live situation the maximiser is awesome.
BigCowz 2 years ago
I have a maximizer in my rig.... Its the best thing ever!!!
