The NES version blows away the snes and genesis versions. The game play is much smoother, the music is much richer. The sega version (which I have) is way too grainy in graphics and sound (especially when theres a blast sound)
@ShadowSumac yeah those 80's FM synths are a love hate thing.. I used to hate it but grew to love it. There is a yamaha synth module I actually want to get that basically has the same synth engine as the genesis but with more capabilities etc.. for my music I make. I have sampled genesis games just to get the sounds.
Batman Return of the Joker is the greatest example of why a video game system does not make a bad game, its the director & producers who make or break a game.
Honestly, the Mega Drive/Genesis version looks like the typical IBM PC game from the late 80s/early 90s, back when people could only rely on 286/386 CPUs and CGA/EGA graphics. It has a pretty bland and uninspired design overall.
I really don't know where people see on nes better graphics than gen version, the music on nes is horrible, maybe a comparison between genesis and snes version could be fare!!!!
Music on the NES is one of the best out there. Graphics are much, much better then on the Genesis (look at the background, palette and Batman Sprite). The only "fair" comparision would be between NES and SNES versions. Because in practically every aspect Genesis version is horrible.
@ShadowSumac Well about sound on NES I can't hear right the drums and plates beats because of natural noise on sound chips, looking at background "1 stage" I only see three color: Black, red and blue clouds...right?. About Gen I clearly hear the kit drums and other sounds, and at background I see a well definited clouds and a beatiful lighted city, Batman sprites is a style cartoon art!!! Nes version of batman could be great on NES ground and I respect your opinion, but stop living in denial.
@tonmasboy If anyone is in denial - then it's you.
Music in the NES have volume very attypical to the NES music. On the Genesis - it's simple synthesized typical Genesis beeping. Nothing special or nothing to remember.
Background on the Genesis for whatever reason is pale and monotounous - only brown and grey. On the NES, while background not very busy, it's vibrant and "moving".
The Nes version had the best Music in terms of Most Sunsoft Nes games being far superior to most of the snes sunsoft titles, graphics sound gameplay,I don't know why the crappy Genesis version decided to give batman a kick attack that does'nt do jack squat but only used for kicking crates open.
Is it me or does the NES version look like a better overall game.Amazing graphics they were able to create on the NES.Never thought i'd be saying that a NES version of a game was better than the GEN version.
@winstong2000 Yes, it' s much better than the other two versions in terms of graphic (surprsingly) and gameplay. Gen version is garbage. SNES version is more or less tolerable, though it's still not that good as the NES one.
Sorry took so long to respond. We really didn't get the AI to where we wanted it by the time SunSoft pulled the plug. If you look at the last level with the rotating Joker head, I mean no one would try to pass that off as a boss level, seriously, but it was just placeholder and we had to stick something in. I thought it was ingenious actually, in that it was so... bizarre. I forget what our plans were for the end of the game but it wasn't that.
hey i worked on the snes version, nice to see it in the light of day!!! i was the lead artist and assoc. producer, and handled the backgrounds and darin k did all the animation. believe me, we were all stunned when our version got shelved. it happened literally overnight. we didn't get a lot of testing in but i gotta say we were pretty proud of it for just three guys working on it. thanks for posting this.
@PapaTopToddPod Could I ask you about this: is this version completed and all that remains is testing? Or there are some unfinished bits - like levels, AI, graphics?
i didn't even know there was an SNES version of this game. i thought it was just for NES and Sega. anyway, i have the NES version of the game and to this day it's still pretty fun.
This was really awesome! I had no idea that a SNES version was even in production.. But man, years later and I'm still in the minority. I love the Genesis version! Granted, that was the version I had when I was kid and it's probably just nostalgia. But, even when I got older and played both versions, I still prefer to play it on the Genesis. So much so, that after seeing this, I'm now going to go out and try to find the Genesis version to play again, lol.
@HolyDiver SNES version was never released though. I didn't try finish it, but from what I have seen this version is complete. So that strange that it wasn't released.
As for "what version is the best" for each it's own. Genesis version looks closest to the old toon I think. But controls are very different from NES version and because of it this game was nearly unplayable to me. And strangely enough Gen version is animated worse than NES version.
The NES version was designed in Japan, while the ports for Genesis and SNES were done by American companies.
Yeah, American game companies in the 8-bit/16-bit era pretty much sucked ass. They sucked so much that they ported an 8-bit game to 16-bit systems and somehow made them look and sound worse.
@Maytag99 I wouldn't be that harsh. SNES version isn't that bad, besides it wasn't completely finished and released. Genesis version on the other hand is awful at everything.
It sure does in allot of parts, even the sounds are not so anoying, before some time i was believe that the master system was having much more greater graficks from the nes! not anymore he he!
WOW! seriusly you guys! did anyone understand that even the nes version was sound allot better from the genesis? and the graficks though they sont have so much colours are realy impresive for a 8bit machine!
lmao, the genny game looks like out of an old computer like amiga

the nes version is super smooth and has a great, minimalist gothic look.
genesis version is shameful. looks like a half-hearted botched Amiga game.
if they'd gotten the looks of the Batman movie game (Sunsoft genesis version) and ironed out the controls, could've been good.
