When you talk, you're not moving air molecules from your vocal chords to whoever you're talking to, you're creating a pressure wave to move the energy. @JamesTClement Kind of, but it's a bit more complex than that. Basically, a shock wave is a buildup of pressure waves (sound waves). Shock waves have the distinction of being allowed to propagate faster than the speed of sound. They are basically nature's way of allowing discontinuities in a flow, which is why you instantly see wind velocity after the shock wave passes. It's really very cool stuff.

And, since a typical nuclear blast releases about 8X as much thermal energy as it does gamma, if you're far enough away to not feel the thermal pulse, you won't get an appreciable gamma dose.

The real danger from a nuclear blast is from alpha radiation. For that, you have to ingest or inhale fallout particles...which take anywhere from hours to weeks to arrive.
