This is really good. Being white, it helps me to be even more conscious of the many ways in which I am privileged. I'm also a feminist, and try very hard in our current movement to make up for the past wrongs 1st and 2nd wavers did to women of color and lesbian women.

On the whole, great, but I have to say, people get fired from jobs, excluded from jobs, beat, raped, and killed for being queer. That seems to me to echo apartheid/ segregation conditions. Not that it is the same, but similar. Also, racism against whites exists and is a problem, just not anywhere near the scale of white racism against others. (note: author of above considers himself indigenous western european, not white)

@falsefight there is no such thing as reverse racism. also, i know that queer rights are something to be fought for, as i am a queer ally, but i spoke of these things in this video because it is about RACE and RACISM. queer people can still have white privilege. queer people still need to check their privilege if they are white.

Maybe it's different in Canada but this whole "white privilege" thing is bullshit. Maybe there are some advantages to being in white in countries where the largest ethnic group is white as I'm sure there are advantages to being Japanese in Japan and Nigerian in Nigeria. Don't get me wrong, racism is a scourge but you continuing to make fun of and belittle well meaning people does none of us any favours. Maybe try to educate them instead of talking behind their backs

@vertmb Fair enough I guess as many people are just clueless. The thing I hate to hear the most is "You're a beautiful black Woman.", why is "black" specified? What's wrong with just "Beautiful Woman"? I have a friend right now that is trying to convince me that all white people are racist but they just don't know it because of "White Privilege" I call bullshit on it all the time. Not everything is about race, some things are about psychology and tolerance is a two way street.

@SpecialFXLady So what I'm going to believe it just because some academic wrote a paper about it generalizing every country and every white person in the world? Give me a break. I have no problem admitting that racism exists to this day, but many of these issues are more complex then so called "white privilege" but if you still need a boogieman to blame all societies problems on then sure I guess white people will do as there is no sense exploring the real issues right?

awesome job! this has made it to the occupy philly facebook page where i found it :) - we are scheduled to have an entire general assembly to discuss race and occupy - i think everyone entering should be required to view your vid first so we can avoid all of these statements which will probably be made during the course of the assembly! fortunately we are having a workshop each week on race for february- hopefully by the end of feb most of us will know not to ever say these trite things!

I'm a woman/queer/jewish/broke/commu­nist/etc.."; "What do you mean check your privilege?"; And of course... the way everyone breaks the ice with me: Where are you from? Let me guess... mexico? No that's too typical...hmmm... guatemala? Wait are you indian? No? So where are you from then?
