  • beautiful:) better with compressed air;)

  • 100 RPM? Sounds ideal for putting on my grandmother's mobility scooter instead of that cheap motor that always seems to fail - but she won't be able to go on the bus anymore :(

  • @erikals2 She could probably pull the bus along too though lol

  • @AG3304 true that

  • Form follows function and this is a thing of beauty!

  • @Squarerig Absolutely so.

  • Where is it?

  • @ejparrott Brede Waterworks,East Sussex,England.Normally open 1st Saturday in the month.

  • The reason this one wasnt scrapped like its twin, was that it was too difficult to dismantle and they didnt get a lot of money,so this one was left in its place. The site also has its own nuclear bunker which is still ready for use at 48hrs notice.(on my channel)

  • @thra5herxb12s All told it's a very interesting spot.I've been into the bunker too,now the home of a group of radio hams, and home also to a number of old and vintage radio related items.

  • Can it move faster?

  • @sparkster7744 It can do around 100 RPM,not for the faint-hearted...

  • It's about 21,000 lb-ft of torque.

  • What is the rpm of this engine at working speed?

  • @KenMacMillan Round about 100 rpm, which was about the optimal for spinning ship's propellors.

  • I didn't think Tangye built anything so big.

  • @douro20 Well,there's the evidence!

  • Reminds me of the steam engine powering the London Bridge lift.

  • Absolutely beautiful. Thank you for the video.

  • @cockercane Thanks very much.

  • Only 400HP but it will work forever.

  • @Palifiox Too true.A little oil here and there, and the right driver listening for unusual sounds when running, and it'll go forever.

  • @Palifiox Only 400 horsepower, but easily 50K+ ft pounds of torque, which is the ONLY thing that matters when you are doing work. Horsepower belongs in cars on the track ;)

  • @AmoralEngineer Of course, but we only told 400HP I think.

  • does this man read the news? sounds like he should

  • now thats a steam engine! They should run it on steam, it would sound so much different!

  • @pennyf9 l think the long-term plan's to do that, but the boiler house and chimney stack went back in the 60s.

  • Fascinating! Thanks for the detailed description. I've always wondered how such a steam engine would start if the flywheel was in the wrong position.

  • @Larsky1010 Glad you liked this old and enormous piece of kit!

  • You have got some pretty interesting things on display near you, the only things near me in Shropshire are fields, cows and angry farmers.

  • Thanks!Perhaps those cows won't oblige the farmers, who get angry as a result!

  • that is AWESOME!

  • Thanks! lt's only a small one compared to the engines they used on the ocean liners!

  • really? wow :-)

  • The ones that drove the Titanic had an 8 foot stroke. They stood 4 or 5 floors high, and were rated at about 15,000HP.Two were provided, along with an equally immense turbine engine,of about the same output.

  • Well they needed to be that massive and powerful I suppose! Do you know why they used a combination of two steam engines and one turbine engine?

  • White Star, the owners, were very traditional with things like engines. The Mauretania, from a few years before, was an all turbine ship.Very modern back then!Titanic's middle propellor was driven by the turbine, which couldn't reverse, but it didn't matter too much with the other two ordinary engines being there as they could reverse. However on that fateful night,l bet they wished the turbine would do it when they ordered full astern.Yet another reason they hit the iceberg.

  • Thanks for the information!

Well yeah, its a shame the unsinkable sank!

  • Too fast,no binoculars in the lookout, many radio warnings of ice.A completely avoidable thing when the unsinkable sank!

  • yup

  • Well according to the people that maintain it,that's all it is,but yes, imagine the torque on this thing!

  • I really enjoyed that River, great remnants of the industrial revolution. Heavy steel machinery coming out of Birmingham. Very cool!

  • Thanks! Amazing to think that these huge plodding things once drove power plants too!
