  • i like make one for every room for my house

  • hi jeanna, great work, ive been trying the fuji circuit (camera hack), but i would like to wind my own 5 way coil instead (as in the tiny camera transformer) of using the tiny transformer from the camera...i'm sorry i'm new to this 'toroid' lark....is there an easy diagram, tutorial on that?..thanks .

  • @100roberthenry

No, not that I know of.

The camera circuits differ a lot.

Check out the very long thread called joule thief at overunity dotcom (the thread started by pirate)

The early months of that thread had lots of discussion about the camera circuits.

There are probably many people there who can help you too.

  • look like we can start to say no to hi power bill we got 400 buck power this moth

  • how long can the light can run if lift on 24 hour a day

  • Excellent. Thank you. I tried using the core of a crt yoke, and got a little over 1kv out with 5 volts input (scoped) but it would only partially light the CFL tube. Guess the permeability isn't there.

Still digging in the junk box. Went without power for 7 months last year. Would have been nice to have had a Jenna Light!

  • @Davetech23

    You say tube?

A cfl is the twirled bulb thing and lights up better than a tube, but is harder to start.

If you are trying a straight tube, then the light is dark at the ends. (This is the reason lid used the cfl to replicate my light.)

Also you could try putting a cap across the battery. If it is the right size it can help a lot.

Sometimes I put a small magnet at the end of the tube to start it up. It can be removed after the light is on.

    thanks

  • would this toroid work ? on eBay just type (Fair-Rite Hi-Freq Ferrite Toroid 2.4'' 5961003801 61)

  • @husam27

I do not know. It needs to be hi permeability, not hi frequency.

I only know that many times chokes are used to choke out the hi frequency, so maybe this is a choke. I just looked it up. I think it is a choke so do not buy this.

The "robust" type transistor in essential too.

The cfl needs everything to be right!

    Did you try mouser?

I think it is too bad that these toroids are not easier to find.

egads I just slipped and clicked the thumbs down! (I don't mean it whatever that is!)

  • Your toriod is too large. Use a smaller one in order to run higher resonant freq. and keep it in-audiable.

  • hi, i am just wondering because i have tried this many times and this has not worked out for me, but i found a huge toroid in an old dvd player i had and it is 2.5 cm high, and 8 cm diameter. so i was just wondering if this toroid can fit this job. also does it make a big difference if it was like 200 turns?? thanks very nice video by the way

  • @husam27 The toroid might not be good enough. Sometimes the toroids inside appliances are there to choke the spikes. (We are using the spikes!)

The number of turns makes a big difference. The gold one in this video has 330 turns, but the primary turns made a very big difference in the resonance.

Try putting a magnet at the cfl connection. That sometimes makes it light when you are close.

  • Comment removed

  • @jeannacav thanks but can you clear up what the difference is between secondary and primary turns are? and what kind of wire did you use copper, or the type found in telephone cables? thanks

  • @husam27 I have tried different types of solid wire. I usually use telephone wire for the primary and varnished "magnet" wire for the secondary.

The primary is the bifilar coil. It is what is called center-tapped.

If you start to wind and pull the wire out and then continue to wind you have the physical structure of this primary coil.

To connect it, you then remove the insulation at the pulled out part and connect it to the pos of the bat.

The part to the base resistor is called the "base coil".

  • excellent work!

  • Jeanna i need help finding the ferrite cores could please tell me where to buy them

  • @ideaLABORATORIES

    Give mouser a try.

I bought mine from a jobber and they are gone; never to return.

You want the highest permeability you can get and although I was able to get a 1 inch toroid to work once, you should get something with a 2 1/2" diameter. Type W is the common designation for highest permeability. Over 11,000mu is high but if the same size also comes in 14,000mu then get that.

(Be sure that what you get is NOT a choke. That is the opposite of what you want.)

  • @Photonicinduction Yes, good going! I think this is a lot of fun.

  • Combine this concept with the Bagdad battery and see how long it lasts.

    :o)

  • @TheRealVerbz Well, yes, but I am looking for a way to do that which sustains itself, if possible. thanks.

Oh, btw the larger transistor needed for this takes more mA than the small one. It is harder to find the self sustaining battery for 100mA, but I will, and I will let you know, too.

  • Jeanna Hello, congratulations is a very interesting design. Thanks for sharing.

Jeanna the toroidal core must be of some special model?

    Can indicarns their characteristics?

Where can I order one for a test?

It may show a diagram of the layout?

    Thanks

  • Thanks

If you make a joule thief circuit - just a normal one first. Then make another one exactly the same, and remove the led from the C-E junction.

Now wrap a secondary around the toroid using 4 turns, and add a led to the wires of the secondary, add turns until you get a light of about the same brightness, but you will use much less amps from the battery this way.

(If the led fails to turn on, turn it around, because there is a polarity with the secondary wires.)

This is the turns per led.

  • This is the beginning.

The transistor plays an important part in this cfl circuit. The little transistors like the 2N2222, or 2N3904 or many other switching transistors will give you a lot of volts but not over 450 which is what you will need to run a cfl.

For that you need a 2N3055, or a TIP31, either is easily available in the states.

The toroid needs to be the highest permeability you can find.

I think these toroids are used in electronic circuits to filter out these spikes we are using.

  • @jeannacav

Is it possible to make one with 2 inch toroid. I made a one with it but secondery voltage is not enough to lit the CFL

  • very interresting. Bravo

How long does the light with battery

    Thank you

  • This is a very interesting question. It lasts 5 1/3 hours.

What is interesting is that the battery lasts the same length of time without any light at all.

This has led me to conclude that the battery is only running the transistor.

Something else (!) is lighting the light.

  • very interresting. Bravo

Combient long does the light with battery

    Thank you

  • Jeanna put it in a vaccuum, then you wont hear that noise.

  • Good video.

For sound proofing, try the drinking straw approach. Line the inside of your box with straws (so the holes are facing your coil) and the cavities will dampen the sound. You can test this theory by getting a box of straws and take the top off, leaving the straws in the box. Put them near your ear.

But that's time intensive and weird. House insulation foam might work as good.

    keep up the good work!

  • Put it in a vaccuum.

  • Jeanna:

My 4 large toroids arrived today so the fun begins tonight with my replication attempts. I am looking forward to it.

    Bill

  • Great Job!! Tank's for sharing. Tec

  • Excellent! You are right about the wooden box and sound proofing. In mine there is a piece of foam (like a sponge) that the coil sits on to help quiet it down. I have read that you can quiet the coil by coating it in wax but I have not tried that yet.

  • Good to know.

If the foam works, that is enough for me.

  • I atach some magnets in diferent patterns to the coil, it rises the HZ and silence the JT.(My wife give me an ultimatum that kills the peeeeeeeeeeee!). If the JT is not HOT you can experiment with liquid paraffin :)

  • Cool that worked!

I know doing that lowers the volts, and so when I put the magnets on it got dimmer, so I adjusted the rheostat then it was bright but I could hear it again.

    I found an OK spot.

I just ordered a wooden box. This thing needs a 'lamp base' to be useful anyway.

Thanks for the suggestion. It is a good one.

    jeanna

  • You mentioned "producing 985 volts with 70 ohms at the base resistor, how many Ma or amp is it?

    Thank You

  • It is usually around 100 mA.

This circuit is really only working to turn the transistor on and off, thus making a pulse. This TIP3055 (or TIP31C) takes more mA than the little 2N3904 does.

If I turn the dimmer on, the battery is sending less into the circuit and it lasts longer than when it is not there, but the light is much less bright too.

I can light this CFL for a full evening using one NiMH AA battery, which is very convenient, as it can be recharged in the next day's sun!

  • Very interesting design.

I'll build one as soon as I can find something to rob the toroid from. So far I can't find the proper "organ donor"

    Great video, thanks for sharing.

  • They called said they can't get more toroids sniff sniff you were right... I have been looking around I found where some people make their own... I may try that. Great video and THANK YOU for this circuit! Cheers

  • Hi Mart,

The company that makes those is still in business and has others. Also, all we really must do is find the permeability of this and the other ones that work. (I do believe it is a low permeability. But not below 900u.) I think this will be easy to accomplish... maybe easier than to mix your own, but, of course, that is a great endeavor too.

  • Jeanna:

Wow, that is bright! Listen to that baby sing. I like how the freq. changes when you move your hand on or near the toroid. My radio shack does not carry rheostats, I had to order mine.

    Great work!

    Bil
