This kick is nothing....my mate Dave AKA Del Coates ...the top points scorer in Balckheath rugby club's history is a much better kicker than Paul Thorburn, or Jonny Wilkinson, or Dan Carter!!! Its true because he has told me 167 times!!!!
Interesting to compare with Seb Janikowski's NFL record field goal last night. Neither kick got more than 10 metres off the ground - they just both leathered it!
Love it how he just gets straight into it. None of this sitting on the shitter looking for a blonde in the crowd, asking the heavens for help or other such poses/bullshit. No need for words of encouragement he just places the ball and kicks the fuck out of it. Masterpiece!
Superb kick, be interesting to see if it could be calculated using modern technology how far it actually went?
whether by luck or design the ball's flight was such that it took it as 'short' a distance it could travel laterally just sneaking inside the left upright :o)
However the previous comments about the ball being twice or three times as heavy & akin to a medicine ball are just stuff & nonsense! Maybe 50+ years ago &when they got WET but in the 80s not much difference at all.
I love the old celebrations, yesterday Dan Carter broke the world record points mark and not a single all black player even gave him a pat on the back. it makes them look a lot more normal when they do those hands in the air celebrations
i saw alan darcy from carlow rugby club at 18 years of age kick into a 25mph windin the curragh, around 1986 it was the score that got us to landsdowne road we won the leinster final thanks a million alan your pal john snoddy
Now we're just waiting on Francois Steyn to try a longer one. He hit a 66m one for Racing Metro against Leinster a month back. But as some have pointed to, it's with a modern ball.
If this was with a current ball in perfect conditions at altitude in South Africa, no team would be safe giving away a penalty on Wales' own goal-line!
and wat makes this cick eaven better is that it was the type of ball they were using back in those days , it was like twicw to 3 times as heavy as the balls they use tday absolutly amazing cick
Considering that Thorburn was kicking using an old style 'heavier' ball, with old boots this kick is remarkable. For all the 50m kicks Francois or Morne Steyn can do at altitude with computer designed aerodynamically improved balls, there is no way that any contemporary player could kick this, particularly as it's out wide. Just incredible.
what makes this special for me is the fact that Bill McClaren was commentating and even he was amazed even after all he'd seen he was still amazed. RIP Bill this record might get broken but when it does it wont be commentated on like that.
The team awarded the penalty has the choice of taking the kick where the offence (late tackle on player who kicked the ball) took place, or where the ball landed fron the kick - the latter option was chosen by Wales.
The wonderful authoritative but genuine tones of Bill McLaren, THE rugby commentator of all time. I had the great honour of meeting him once in cardiff for a few minutes and he was a warm character indeed. Sadly missed indeed. RIP Bill, from probably any rugby union fan anywere.
It's hard for younger viewers to appreciate just how heavy and damn difficult those old brown leather balls were to kick, they also got water logged.....and no tee!
Who the hell is sad enough to watch this amazing footage and then run to the 1978 edition of the GBoR to prove the video poster wrong by quoting said book on the comments?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Definitelyt _not_ "the biggest kick ever":
"In the match Bridlington School 1st XV v. an Army XV at Bridlington, Humberside in 1944, Ernie Cooper, captaining the school, landed a penalty kick from a measured 81 yd (74 m) from the post with a kick that carried over the dead ball line." Guinness Book of Records, 25th Edition, 1978, page 278.
also what makes this even more impressive is the balls they had then were even heavier and an harder material than what we got now, and the ball was set on sand not the 1feet off the floor crap kicking tee's players use now. truely amazing kick
I'm french and I don't get to decipher what the commentator says between "monster" (0:45) and "THAT IS AMAZING !" Please somebody can write it. Thanking you in advance.
this shot is monstrous. During a test match between Fr and Nzel in 1968, Pierre Villepreux converted a penalty (without tee) at 67m, so 2,5m more than Paul Thorburn; Unfortunaly, there is not video of that archive, obviously.
Incredible kick with great commentators. The Scottish announcer gave a description that was dramatic and well timed. Does anyone know the announcers name?

Bill McClaren, the commentator, refers to a "double penalty" when the free kick is given. What does this mean, exactly?

The team awarded the penalty has the choice of taking the kick where the offence (late tackle on player who kicked the ball) took place, or where the ball landed fron the kick - the latter option was chosen by Wales.
