I'd like to see this movie redone. But not because this wasn't good but because I'd like to see more than Broadway goers and movie buffs to know about it. I want this to be put out to the world as if it was a blockbuster. I want the world to see this as a story that needs telling. Plus I wouldn't mind seeing some of the musical numbers from the Broadway shows added to the movie.
Even better but when the remake is sold as a DVD/Blu Ray, they can package it in with the original, like "Pelham 123"
I also saw this movie in the 80s it's a great movie about the turn of the century. It has it's up's and down's. But for most part I thought James Cagney Finish with a Bang!
Very well made movie, but didn´t actually like it. Didn´t like the plot. It starts well but halfway the stories get too exagerated and unrealistic, it was kinda disappointing. I recommend it anyway, there´s some nice film making in it.
One of my all time favorite films. I saw it when I was a teenager in the 80s and have been a fan of it ever since. Great music and cast. Elizabeth McGovern and Howard Rollins Jr. made the film.
@scrymusic Really...I don't understand why people feel an old movie "needs" to be remade; why not just watch the original? The only thing a remake could add to this movie is maybe CGI and 3-D.
@smichelle65 I think there are lot of factor that fuel those thoughtless responses. One of the biggest ones, I think, are absolutely no appreciation for the original film itself and they want a better one to make up for their "wasted" time. But not all of those factors are negative, sometimes some people want things remade because the film technology wasn't there yet (even though no advancement in tech wouldn't do anything for this film in particular) and the final product was weaker..continued.
@lukaspukas1 continued: ...than what it could have been (e.g. better quality cameras, better lenses, etc). But that's the minority. I've got a better idea: why not take shitty movies that had a lot of promise, and fix the problems that were in the original, so something better can be made? God...Hollywood...what a mess.
is it possible for a movie to be more underrated than this??...what a masterpiece...great script writing, acting, set designs, costume...I believe Moses Gunn won some type of award for his portrayal of Booker T. Washington...
This was a great movie. I think it came out around the same time as Reds. It's a pity more people don't know about it. I wish Hollywood would turn out more movies like this and Reds. Films seem so dumb nowadays.
It's been a while since I've seen this movie. I need to find a copy of it for my personal library.

Was "Gliding" as amazing in the movie as it was in the musical?

A great movie, but an even better soundtrack. One of Randy Newman's best.

I thought this was a good film, though I feel the book was superior and that musical also surpassed the film.
Is it just me or is the guy doing the voiceover have a very deep and kind of creepy voice? His "Bad Time, Good Time, Ragtime" is very dark.

My good sir, are you implying that Transformers 5: Attack of the Exploding Car Boob Robots is stupid? How dare you! I challenge you to a duel!

No but seriously I agree with you. Ragtime is awesome. Hollywood isn't perfect but she still turns out good movies now and again.
