This is just a guess, but wasn't the theme from the short-lived urban late-night show "Vibe" an amalgamation of this tune and "Ain't We Funkin' Now"? I'm sensing a Quincy Jones trivia connection here.
can music survive the market? I believe when saturday nights were more affordable, people used their bodies a lot more, and got into the music much more. People would rather reflect upon them sevles rather then let their minds and bodies go into the song.
Well. I was 8 in '78 - but my brother was 17 and a LOT bigger than me. Needless to say we had to listen to "his music." So thankful for that because my I got this this education early. RIP "HOLLYWOOD!" #44!
@nappyg1 The instruments sound good because back then, most public schools had good music programs and real performance in performing arts was encouraged, as opposed to mere showmanship like today. Also, as the generations have changed, the work ethic has too, and the understanding of musicianship has been replaced by an emphasis on flash and razzle-dazzle. The other challenge to school music departments is the growth of life-sucking standardized tests, SpED, ESL, and other major cash drains.
this is from right in the middle of the golden age of music: 1976-1981. after that pretty music pretty much died. during this period not only did we have massive artists like ew&f, bj, commodores, funkadelic, mandrill, brenda russell, graham central station, mother's finest and many more geniuses (plus stevie's most creative period), but also the confluence of the best organic recording techniques, meaning after things got technically lovely, but before synthetic music had taken over.
You hit the nail squarely and firmly on the head. I couldn't agree more! It really was a fantastic period.
This track wasn't a hit, but I wore it out. I remember thinking "git up offa dat stuff" sounded amazing coming out of the speakers... like they were in the room with me. Love this record.
what a jam, so many layers, the funky doesn't prepare you for the smooth and loving chorus. Its a typical Quincy Jones arrangement, lots of highs and lows, that is the crazy jazz man in him, mixing different types of sounds into one record.
A classic album, listen to this and despair of black music nowadays. There's more feeling and groove in a 2 minute sample of this than in a whole album by today's so-called R&B acts. Keep it forever funky. Peace.
The reason I loved this album is because of this song which I still love today! George's smile reminded me of a guy who I liked smile! I couldn't resist! Great Post!
Ma favorite bassman LOUIS JOHNSON. Is anyone can play CELEBRATION from the album "light up the the night" and MIDNIGHT SOUL PATROL with stanley Clarke and Billy Cobham on drums(Quincy Jones) ? Louis plays amazing solo on these 2 tunes ? Many "funky" thanks !
BJ are it! They haven't been matched ever since this excellent album from 1978! The musicianship, production, and engineering are superb to the max! If you want become an excellent recording engineer/producer/mixer/mastering engineer, then use this album as your example. Ever since hearing "Strawberry Letter 23" I've been a fan. My favorite instrumental of all time is "Streetwave", last song on the Blam!! album. All I can say is the Brothers Johnson are and will always be my #1 musicians/group!
eff disco , but i love funk and i hate white people for effing with real black music, now all the kids like me , dont know about this stuff, becasue white people are their dumb power struggle couldnt stop, like if black people even care about taking control ,,we just want to have some funkin fun,
this was out the winter of 1978 december,, i wish i could get back i would be so happy life was so simple then.. plus i would be 13 again lol... if anyone remember 1978 tell me something about a memory.. peace to all
Well Streetwave the other song from this album was nominated for a Grammy in the category Best Rhythm and Blues instrumental. EWF beat them out with their track "Running" but the Brothers Johnson went Platiumn on this album.
@graydog788 that was the year we first heard of some lil guy named PRINCE!!! little did we know the genius music that was soon 2 come from him...back then,WOW!!!!
@graydog788 I remember standing in a long line for the first "Superman" movie with Christopher Reeves. Someone drove by the theater blasting "Ain't we Funkin Now". I had only heard the song on AM radio, so was impressed with how forceful it sounded. Brought the cassette a few days later.
This is such combination of sooth and raw. Funky hard driving bass and drums. Yet the vocals during the course is really moving -Quincey Jones is brilliant...
Say Heyroz, when searching for some of my favorites your name comes up alot! Was wondering if you or anyone out there knows an instrumental jam by the Brothers Johnson. It's a hot jam!!! I think it's on the Strawberry 23 LP, but dont know for sure, nor do I know the title of the song. Thanks!
I've asked this so many times, but I'm asking again...why can't we have nice music anymore? I don't remember hearing this one before, and like so many other songs from the pre-90s, it's simply awesome. Not vulgar, not too loud, and musically complex enough to actually be called music. Very nice.
Hands Down...............one of the BADDEST bass grooves of all time. I wore the grooves out of this song & album when it came out! One of my biggest influential songs to have the desire to be bassplayer. Thanks you for this pot!
Forgot how tight this one was back in the 70's. This played at top volume while cleaning the house while the folks were out and about. Thanks for this treat!
I saw this group in concert back in the mid-'70s. Wow, what a sound. Total SOUL !!
