Does anybody know what part on the dash is called that holds the ashtray? The mounts on the inside that hold the ashtray broke on one side and now it falls out and wont stay in.
you need to show how to move the heater box from the fire wall because removing the two bolts on the bracket don't allow the heater box to come away. Also when you come back in the cab you say there is a bolt on the right side that you remove, your camera doesn't show at all where that is.....
Thanks for the video...couldn't have done the job without it!
Managed to do mine in 4 hours and I DIDN'T have to pull the box out from the firewall...the metal pipes that went through the firewall had pivoting connections to the core so it was a
simple matter of lining them up and slowly rotating them while lowering the core into place.
Don't know the brand name of the new core but got it at Sanel Auto Parts here in NH.
wow man, this video is awesome. tonight i pulled the dash out and got the hose clamps free with your help, tomorrow morning with the sunlight, i'll replace the heater core.
Whata bunch a crap my 78 bronco i just pull out the heater box , my 60 bird same deal i didn't have GUT the whole interior to fix either. corperate bs.i need to make a airplane out od old dodge heater cores and plastic dash material and fly it into the mopars main office.
Just did one on a 99 4x4 with manual tranny today. Had to remove the center console shifter cover. It was a tight squeeze getting the AC lines to fit through the little fire wall hole. On the upper right side it isn't a screw but a nut that faces upward. And yes, four nuts on the engine side of fire wall, one under the computer. The dealer wanted $1050 to do it. Customer agreed to pay me $600 for my labor. They supplied the parts (heater core and hoses). Took me about 3-4 hrs. ☺
Thanks for taking the time getting the camera in there to see the screws. I always thought about taking videos of my repairs but I have a pretty good size camera.. Looks like I'll have to invest in something smaller like a GoPro Hero.
I installed a heater core in my 2001 Dodge Ram 1500.Took me 6 hrs and i didn't have to undo any A/C Lines.or any vacum hoses.Main thing is getting the heat box pulled back.I was stomped on why it wouldn't come out and found this video and i seen where there was a bolt with nut upper firewall behind engine.Took it out and didn't take no time at all. Thanks for sharing this video.Needless to say my dash was crack to hell in back.So i'm just buying a new one.Cold just arrived and i have heat.
Hi, I followed this video and was able to do it without draining the A/C. Just be sure to remove the black metal plate that the computer and accumilator are mounted to on the fire wall. By removing the plate, it allows the A/C lines to go further into the firewall when you pull the heater assembly away. I bought the heater core from autozone, so I was able to swivel the two lines down a bit so it clears. I invented a couple of bad words but it can be done. Good Luck.
@marcv1012 AUTOZONE, are you in Arizona by chance and would you be interested in doing it again? I have the new core ready to go, but I am really NOT enthused to go about it I'd rather do the transmission again than mess with the dash lol. All the labor quotes I've gotten are $400 ballpark I'm lookin' more $100 (wishful thinking). Let me know if you are local and want to do it and we can get in touch.
@3xHimSx3 $100 for a 6 hour job??? lol $400 seems like a fair deal. Why don't you do it yourself. Take your time, the whole day if you have to. Keep the $100 towards extra parts you may need. ;)
@viggoM35 Ya.., but perhaps someone who isn't a mechanic by trade only hobby would be interested in my offer. I do stuff for people all the time dirt cheap because I like to do it and I like helpin' people out. I wasn't asking a shop to do it lol just someone who's done it before and may want an extra $100 in their pocket. I did it already though. took me 4 hours out and in. ;)
does anyone know what the piece of plastic is called that hold the ac power outlets and the mounts for the ashtray? I know its all one piece of plastic but I dont know what that piece is called to get a new one?
@massey2012 ---> Lower Panel <--- i dont know if hte dealership still sells it your best bet is junk yard, but lower panel is the correct technical name for it
I did this 2 weeks ago on a '98 Ram V-6 5-spd. I had dash partially apart enough that I could still drive it took about 2-2.5 hours to get it apart, replace it and re-assemble enough to drive it. Definitely figure on 3.5 hours total if you know exactly what needs to be done, there were several bolts that were hard to see and it took trial an error to get the HVAC box out enough to access the heater core (the bolts under the hood were especially hard to see). Mine was plugged but not leaking.
Also... you do NOT need to disconnect the AC lines under the hood. There is enough slack (because you removed the Accumulator bracket) to pull the Heater Core housing away from firewall inside the cab. I did this job alone and found it easier to re-install the Dash by installing the 2 bottom side big bolts (hand tight) first then securing CENTER top dash screw. I also used a bungee cord to assist me on passenger side dash for support. Good Luck. Great Video! Thanks.
6 hours to complete for novice: Things Video Missed: 1. Disconnect PRND21 cable b4 dropping steering column; 2. Remove 2 side bolts under center cover (behind 4wd shifter); 3.Under the hood, Only 4 bolts to remove on firewall (2 behind PCM, Remove 1 bolt holding Accumulator Bracket, and 1 bolt on firewall behind lifter cover); 4. fyi...Heater hoses are 5/8" ID (if cutting hoses); 5. Buy heater core(HC) with movable tubes; 6.Secure HC brackets b4 attaching heater hoses under hood
LOL! So, my cousins truck needs a heater core. By definition, the truck is totaled because of a leaky heater core as it would cost him more to fix it than the truck is worth. What a heap of crap. Now I know why they blue-book so freaking low. They're garbage. He's gonna flip when I educate him on this.
thanks for the video man!!! made my replacement go much smoother than anticipated (about 5 hours total taking my time and eating lunch while picking up the parts).
Great job on the vid, lots of comments helpful too. I am starting job soon and will let you know how it goes. Have two Dakotas, an '00 and '02 Quad, very happy with both.
tried it to the word. dash wont come lose with all the a/c lines running through the firewall. there are also 4 bolt next to impossible to reach, and im not talking about the ones on top of the dash. next to impossible brother. spent 13 hrs taking apart and putting back together for absolutly nothing.
Just did mine today. Have twin turbos on my truck so I had to remove some turbo piping to access the firewall and completed the job in 3 hours :-) you also forgot to mention the bolt behind the valve cover and instead of removing the "screws" that mount to the exterior air mixing box, its easier to take the 1 bolt off in the top right corner of the mixing box. EXCELLENT VIDEO
ive got a 2001 dodge ram 1500 and it sounds like theres water sloshing around for a minute when i start it. Is this a heater core prob? i can do everything in your video but when you hook it back up,do you just hook your hoses up and put antifreeze inthe radiator till full?
@KiLLtheCorrUpt Yes, I found mine made that noise before I replaced it, likely because it was 100% blocked or close to it. Mine all I did was disconnect the Heater Core hoses, replace and hook the hoses back up...I never needed to re-fill the coolant or purge the air out...in face next to no coolant came out when I disconnected the heater core hoses.
in Florida that sells a top skin and bezel that is far more reasonable than the 400 to 700 Dodge wants for replacement parts and auto salvage yards want 150 to 200 for a used top and 100 to 150 for a bezel and they are at least 9yrs old. There is a drain at the bottom of the box that pokes into the engine compartment but
I would still suggest wiping out the box to be sure no antifreeze film is left. Also inside the cab passenger side upper right behind the dash is another stud and nut that hold the box. Dodge dashboards are notorious for cracking. There's a company Cont.
