What a brilliant challenge. I will try it sometime. I think I probably say no a lot to social engagements due to the craziness in my head of all the other ways I should or could be spending my time.
I'm not really participating in this 'revolution' but I find the stories from those who are very interesting. I'd like to think of myself as an avid supporter!
Yes Day sounds interesting, I might actually try it. but it seems like there would be problems. For example, if two people ask you mutually independent dinners, how could you say yes to both?
I ended up with 3 cups of coffee on my desk at one point because people would keep walking past on the way to the kitchen and asking whether I fancied a cuppa.....they must think I have a caffeine addiction!
I said yes to myself yesterday because that was really the only thing out of my normal routine, haha. I took myself to the library without any of my kids and spent a glorious hour looking through books and striking up friendly conversation with the reference librarian.
Seriously, I could probably spend four hours a day in the library and be completely happy.
I was at a party last night and I had to say yes to a lot of things, the worst of which was when my friend asked if I wanted him to make my drink into a 'cocktail', then he asked if I wanted everything in it which lead to me having to quickly drink a large cup of white wine, with a shot of vodka mixed with various juices, maple syrup and CHOCOLATE MILK. I had to drink it quickly because the milk would have curdled otherwise. It was disgusting and I woke up feeling not too well.
Most of my day was spent at work, which is a ski store. About eighty percent of the questions I was asked were "do you have any skis for my son/daughter?" and since we ran out of kids' skis yesterday, I royally failed at saying yes to everything.
if i one day get a large sum of money, i would like to take a train at King Cross Station and when one of those snack carts roll by i'll say "I'll take the lot." -julian
Thanks for inspiring me to do this! It's been a challenge but I'm thoroughly enjoying it. Have to create some balance though, I'd much rather work on videos all day than actually, well, work. But I'm going to keep going and I'm going to find the balance. Thanks again!
I say yes to help alot. I wouldn't say no to a lift or a kitkat and lots of people I've found are the complete opposite and never accept anything, and they make me feel guilty that I'm saying yes when people offer me things. I don't know which to say anymore!
I think the point is to find a balance in the times we say yes and the times we say no... just don't always say yes or always say no... it depends on who, when, and in what situation... sometimes the right thing to say is 'perhaps' I mean, don't close the door, but also don't leave it widely open... ;)
I'm still deciding if I won today- when my brother asked me to play a board game he's wanted me to play for ages I said yes, but when the lady in a shop asked me if I wanted the shoes I was trying on I said no and I've only just remebered this! I'm tempted to say yes to myself though- just because its in the spirit of the challenge :p
'Just say yes' by snow patrol in my head right now! Love that song! Also know exactly how you feel about all girls schools independence thing- I guess it's mostly a good thing but we can't always do everything by ourselves. Well done so far, it's been brilliant! :)
Haha. You got offered help (granted you were moving houses), I got to make dinner and iron clothes and stuff. I didn't even tell anyone I was doing it! BUT, I did like the idea of saying yes more often, which is something I know I do too little of. Even to fun things that I don't do because I think I'm too busy.
difinitive proof against star signs, me and my twin sister, completely different people, enough said.
as for what you were saying how you would like to be saving others than the other way around, for me, i would much rather that noone had to help me like for example lift to train station ect
but in a life or death situation, i would far far far rather it was my life at risk than someone elses, literally my biggest fear is someone else dying that i could have saved, i would kill myself.
I think I should probably try saying yes more too, I always seem to find myself saying no to help or other things without even thinking about it properly. I don't know why, but it's like a reflex or something now with how often I say it. Good video :)
I think this timed out very well for you, saying yes to help on a moving day seems like a win to me. This is really fun, seeing videos from you every day.
i get what you're saying about letting people help you. my problem is asking for help, actually. as you say, the disadvantage of being schooled to be self-sufficient and smart is, even without trust issues, admitting when you don't have it figured out, or can't do it all on you own.
i really love that youre doing a video everyday! I watch your old videos as background noise when im studying haha, i find your voice quite focus helping if that makes any sense. I wondered if you could do a few more videos about book hauls and what books are about and how unis going and what your essays and stuff were like, like you used to :)
So far, this hasn't been much of a challenge. My mother asked if I'd help with something, my sister wanted me to brainstorm a school project with her etc. Nothing big. It makes me wonder though if I help if I when I'm not asked. Or do I just shrug it off, with "I'm busy"?
I think you got more out of saying yes by realising that you need to accept help occasionally and that going against the grain of the usual day to day activity isn't always a bad thing. If you were to have said yes to silly things then it would have defeated the learning point really.
I'm at an all girls school, and everyone is generally really clever so when I don't understand something and everyone else does, I feel bad that I don't get it and need to ask for help. I'm really enjoying these videos! :D
Nah mate, don't get into that star sign rubbish. Being a leo doesn't mean anything unless you think it does... so be yourself. Don't be whatever a star sign says you are.
I actually avoided going shopping today because they always ask me if I want to get a points card for the store and I didn't want to end up with a bunch of cards I'll never use.
God, I sympathise so much with the asking for help thing. Oddly enough, one of my resolutions is to say no to people more. It sounds like had that same kind of secondary school experience as you - people had huge expectations of me and I felt I had to meet them all the time. As such, I have a really hard time turning people down or disappointing them, and it means I end up doing a lot of stuff I really don't want to do. Less of that this year, I've determined!
this is a great mission that i'd be terrible at. i'm the same way about not wanting to accept help- to the point that i've had close friends tell me years into friendships that they felt like we were on uneven footing, or that i'd never "let them in" or whatever, because i'd never let them help me with things. good lesson.
It wasn't really hard for me today, cause I say quite often Yes. Maybe because I like helping and just enjoy preparing the dinner (or I just wasn't ask difficult questions). It would be a harder challenge for me to say no all the time. (But I forgot to check the task this morning and I was shopping,so probably I would have bought some more books and other things^^)
Saying yes to people is good because you learn who is willing to take advantage of you. The ones that don't take advantage will be easy to say yes to always.
As a fan of readit1st, I feel like I should ask whether you know that The Yes Man is actually based on a book by Dave Gorman where he genuinely went round saying yes for ages. I was about to say "it's way more realistic than the film" but that would be because it's autobiographical... duh...
i would have failed so hard at today's mission. lol I'm a senior in high school and my high school ski club is going on a ski trip tomorrow after school (first one of the year). My friend kept trying to get me to go, but as much as i would like i just can't. how can you survive a day just saying yes?!?!
I just realized how much you look like Adele.
