Only heard this and the Arcade Fire version for the first time tonight and while they are both excellent. Arcade Fire just can't compete with the power of Gabriel's version. Its simply so emotive. This is one of those rare occasions, much like Cash's version of 'Hurt' where the cover simply overshadows the original.

Treacly, boring? I would say different entirely - I love Arcade Fire piece, so vividly energetic, but Peter Gabriel manage to make a different interpretation of the same piece and he did it well. I simply enjoy the lyrics here, sounding much more /dramatic/ in his execution.
