He's right about Waking Life being pretentious in the sense that none of the encounters feel real. The characters just suddenly switch gears and start sermonizing, which is fine for the content itself, but as a narrative it's just not well put together.
@Bluehawk2008 >> Yeah, I saw Waking Life on DVD and figured I would've walked out had I seen it in theatres. There's some things I like (the car boat and the discussion there, and the reunion of Ethan Hawke and Julie Delphy from Before Sunrise). This is basically a bunch of lectures sewn together, which isn't a film, just a bore.
You guys obviously know a lot about movies but it seems to me that you haven't read enough PKD to make a fair assessment. For example, your critique of Total Recall is unfair, which in my opinion is the closest movie to the story. The last line of the movie is "I just had a terrible thought, what if this was all a dream?" and then fades out to white like a dream. It is the only movie that leaves the viewer wondering if the story is real or a dream. PKD is all about questioning reality.
Most of Phillip K. Dick's books are very interesting. I'm shocked when I read "A Scanner Darkly" after I saw the movie. It's almost word for word accurate.
Minority Report was good up until the point where he met the old woman. That's where it started to get iffy. It's not that bad, but not good enough to recommend.
As for Waking Life, that's good as a DVD watch. That way, you can see the section you like and not get agititated by long monologues.
Douglas Quaid got what he paid for. The salesman said the memories will be no different to anyone one in his head. The best ending ever in sci fi history. It was not a happy ending. In fact it was one of the most frustrating endings as you never can tell if it is real or not.
This is just a competition between a trio of film nerds. It's all about who can one-up the next person--pretty sad. How many times are you going to say, "check IMDB"? Why don't you just stick to talking about the films, and not argue about petty details. You guys don't really know much about PKD. Disappointing, to be sure.
you made me think about a gnostic idea where one god created another god which created another god and so on. the two gods one perfect the other imperfect could be the god of earth and humans(the imperfect one b/c he is not the ultimate god of the universe just of humans) and the other god which presides over our more developed twin planet. that god is the god of our god and then what makes humans seem really small is that god may have a god too.
did cameron go record, and also admit that he ripped off another film called Cyborg 2087? it starred the same guy who was in The Day the Earth stood still. if he didn't, he needs to.
Wow I'm a major league Terminator fan and I never knew that. Cameron did a visionary job with it though. He based The terminator on his dreams (or that's what he said).
was the end of a scanner darkly as depressing as they make out? i thought it was meant to be fairly hopeful. he talks of giving the blue flower to his friends, suggesting that evidence is gonna get out, linking new path to the production of substance D. kinda depressing how wasted and alone he is in that field, but putting the flower in his shoe was pretty optimistic i thought. and minority report isn't that bad :$
Total Recall is a terrible movie. Why, on Mars, where exposure the elements sucks your eyes from your head, is there not bullet-proof glass? A window gets shot out every two minutes.
What a goddamned idiot you are Lsdfunk (Good username. Did you read it off the back of a cereal packet?). They may get some facts wrong but if anyone wanted to listen to you, oh great and powerful PKD fan, you'd have your own show and not these guys. At least these would admit they're wrong and not hide it. Now never darken our doorway with your bitching again buzzboy.
At the end of "Total Recall" there's a bright white light that comes over the screen. On the DVD Paul Verhoeven says that he put this in because it sort of suggested that Quaid was still at Recall and would have to be lebotomized. This isn't noticed a lot so it's generally considered to have a happy ending, when in reality it's neither.
you can't expect a perfect movie being made form the hands of phiip K dick. At least they're trying. Maybe, just maybe they can do one more with, oh I don't know, an olsen twin and johnny depp, or maybe even demi moore. Those actors can play complex and engaging roles.
as a fan of bladerunner i was appalled by the innacurate synopsis of blade runner. as a fan of Philip k Dick I was annoyed by the simplification of the biographical info on Philip K Dick and his intentions in regard to his short stories and writing
The ending of "Total Recall" is ambiguous. If you watch one of the documentaries on the DVD, Paul Verhoeven talks about the ending. At the ending there's a huge flash of white light that covers the screen. This suggests that maybe it was all a dream and that Quaid is going to get lobotomised.
Also, not only has the Final Cut of Blade Runner come out, there's also an Ultimate edition that includes the theatrical cut, the international cut, the Director's Cut, the Workprint cut and of course the Final Cut. Awesome!
I generally consider "Blade Runner" to be the best sci fi film ever, even better than Star Wars even (Not that I'm saying Star Wars is bad). However I personally liked "Minority Report" but I do agree with what you are saying, it should have ended at a certain point and the humour was totally inappropriate. It's likely that the humour was put by Spielberg for families who wanted to take their kids to see a god damn Philip K Dick movie!
Ralph Bakshi DID NOT develop Rotoscoping, as they mistakenly state in discussing A SCANNER DARKLY. The Fleischer Brothers studio developed back in the 1920s, and they used it to great effect in many of their cartoons at that time. Disney used in (after the Fleischers) in his first feature length animated film, SNOW WHITE.
I disagree with these guys on some of their assessments, but, hey, we all have our own opinions.
They got SOOOO much wrong regarding Blade Runner. No mention of Hampton Fancher when they talked of the screenwriting(They mentionedPeoples). If it weren't for Fancher, there would be no Blade Runner. It was NOT filmed in Tokyo at all! Although PKD did express his dissatisfaction with the filming at the beginning(the script primarily),he later embraced the movie after viewing some footage.Minority Report. The point is not that the future cannot be changed(Eric)it is that we have a choice.
Uh, PKD is always about the glass is half empty. Read the story the movie's based on. Spielberg couldn't go the "dark route" and instead had to return to one of his uplifting endings. That aside, Tom Cruise's character did NOT change the future, there was no "choice." Flaw in the system showed that someone could be falsely accused if the person seen committing that murder could fool the system into thinking it was that someone. There was no outcome to indicate that "choice" was an option.
I think you were a bit hard on "Minority Report", but I do see where you're coming from, it probably should have ended with Tom Cruise killing the guy. Great show- keep posting.
Hmm - I think you're spending too much time upfront to 'explain' things to the audience (you can assume we know something about the subject, I think, and move on). Consequently, you only squeeze in a few films to discuss. Too bad. I think you're in danger of becoming too 'polished'. The great thing about the show is the sort of feel it has of sitting in on a conversation, as opposed to having stuff presented to us.
Another Great show... i hate to say it, but i didnt hate Minority report that much... but i can see how the "Zanieness" was tacked on as well as the inappropriate humor.
Tom Hanks in Saving Private Ryan, did afew too many "Tom Hanksisms" that made it seem like he was his character from the burbs rather than a war torn average guy... the entire sequence talking to the deaf soldier was ghastly.
really god show =)
