I did this drawing on the computer with OpenCanvas. As for tips... wow where to begin. Draw a lot. Basically you need to train your brain and your hand to work together. Study the style of artists you really like, read tutorials... and draw draw draw XD

I'm using a quite different style than here but it should help somewhat to understand how toning could be done.
