I never understand why big teambosses didnt see him as a great opportunity for their team.. I mean, he could have joined Ferrari back then, or Mclaren..
I am sure when he drove those cars, he made alot more points then Arrows or Minardi, or Tyrell.
Still gives me goosebumps! Verstappen was Holland's best F1 driver! Shame that he was a little bit of a dickhead and was badly managed by Huub Rothengatter.
Woow, the "timing" at 3:05 is just perfect... she says it is starting to rain, then the Ferrari's go off with a huge roar of the crowd... great race! :)
What a bloody shame Walkinshaw sacked him for 2002! I think from 18th to 6th is one of the best starts in F1 history up do date! Verstappen is a true racer and is sincerely missed by a lot of (Dutch) F1 fans.
P2 with a Arrows, Jos was a true racer in rainy conditions when power doesnt matter, he showed what he was capable off. Just see how that Ferrari acclerate pass the Arrows at 5,16 lol, Asiacrap engine it had that Arrows!!

what's so special here about verstappen?? he was lucky and than it began to rain. and if it rains, it doesn't matter which car you're driving... it's all about the driver.. that's why schumacher has won this race =P
@karl4germany : lol I can say schumacher was lucky too, you spoke against yourself, its all about the the driver and Verstappen went from 18 till 6th.
"Jos was flying". I am still thrilled when I see this race again, I was watching this Live back then. Jos is still our national hero, especailly for races like this one and Canada.
This race with Jos Verstappen is the race i will allways remember most. Fantastic race, my all time favorite!! I'm dutch, and Jos will allways be nr.1 for me! No Albers, no Doornbos, no Coronel, Jos Verstappen: starting king and rain king, aggressive and overtaking. Jos the Boss!!! Overtaking is an art! If he had a good car he would've been a really really big one! And the comment in the end of the video by Schumacher says it all...
I don't know much about Jos, and I was wondering why a better team didnt take him after he left Benneton. He went to Tyrell, or what other team afterwards? schumi got way too much credit for sure for a 94 championship he didnt earn. Can you fill me in on some of Jos's history?
Well Jos's history starts in 1994 when he was a driver for Benneton, he had 2 3th places one in Hungaroring and one in Belgium. He was 10th in the championship with 10 points. In 1995 Jos hoped that he got another chance at Benneton but they choose for Schumacher and Herbert. In 1995 Verstappen drover for the British team Simtek, and he was testdriver for Benneton in that year. He drove 4 races for Simtek and his highest finish position was 12th.
In 1996 Jos got a second chance after that year of disaster 1995. Jos joined Arrows Footwork, and in that year he had the laprecord on circuit park Zandvoort. He drove 16 races and and he was 16th in the championship with 1 point. In 1997 Jos was allowed to drive for Tyrrell Ford, he in that year he drove 17 races en in the championship he was 22d with 0 points. In 1998 it look like that Jos shouldn't drive in Formula 1 but he still managed to get a place at Stewart Ford.
He drove in 1997 9 races and his highest finish position was 12th. In 1999 we first thought that a dream should come true Jos was going to drive for HondaF1, and this would be his chance to drive at the head of the field in 2000. But when Honda master Dr. Harvey Postlethwaite died on a hart-attack Honda pulled back and the were only the enige supplier for F1. And so Jos had no job in 1999. In 2000 Jos joined again Arrows Supertec he drove 17 races and his highest finish position was 4th.
"Jos Verstappen is a fighter every inch of the way"
"He still refuses to give way, he runs wide and Frentzen is going through on the inside he's going to get both of them no he isn't he's only going to get Hakkinnen, Hakinnen far from gaining a place has lost one."
Nonsense we can all say about verstappen, wouldnt be a lie either. but this is just an amazing performance which he has done several times since. useless as a whole package but when the man does get's going speechless you become
It was very nice to see this again. Jos rules! I still hope that someday he'll be back for just one more season, but it's not very realistic to think that it might happen.. :)
Verstappen is the best dutch driver ever. Second comes Doornbos, Albers i think just has a rich dady, no talent at all.
Verstappen made the places at the start by firstly running over just about the whole inside kerb at turn one and then squeezing round a beneton, Heidfeld, Panis and Hakinnen whilst Frentzen came back up to speed around turn 3.
How on earth did it get there and who is it? Verstepppen..... The absolute best dutch driver of all times. Jos Verstappen is the best we miss you forever Jos!!!
Had it not stopped raining, Jos might have won the race!! Another thing which impressed about Jos, was the 2001 Italian Grand Prix. Jos qualified 19th, but since Monza requires very little downforce and aerodynamics, which Arrows seems to have a lack of, Jos was 6th after four laps. He looked set to secure P5, after David Coulthard's engine failure, but ground to a halt due to fuel pressure problems.
The best race I have ever seen! In the 4th lap, both Ferraris went off, and the monsoon allowed Verstappen to lead! But the Ferraris were so fast that they had a 1-2. Jos clearly deserved better!
I'm self-employed and worked for Jan as well by the way, but that's beside the point. He should have raced for his fans and deal with the problem afterwards. Disregarding his fans is the problem, not taking measures for late payment.
Yes he did. He put in Jeroen Bleekemolen, who may not be as spectacular, but is a better team player and simply did better than Jos did. If you're referring to the payment, that was done before the Zandvoort race, the whole million bucks. But let's stop the discussion and enjoy racing shall we? As said, I'm no JV basher, I just think I have valid reasons not to be a fan anymore.
No, that payment was for the first season, Jan was suposed(according to the new contract) already have payed the first part of the salary for the new season but was already a few weeks late with his payment.
Don't you think a late salary payment is a bit of a lame excuse not to drive for your 60K home crowd? As said, he had the option to discuss it after the race. A real sportsman would have always driven.
But that does'nt mean Jos has the full blame, Jan did'nt keep his word, but maybe this was his plan since Bleekemolen is a lot cheaper(as a way to get rid of Jos).
