I waited for years to create a youtube account because of fear of not being able to make it good enough. I finally got fed up with not being able to do *anything*, and just uploaded a few videos. I'm pleased with the results of what I've done now, even got a few people talking to me who have the same interests. :) What I accomplished during the period of self-doubt: nothing. What I got done after just *doing* it? Lots. :) Lesson learned? Perfection isn't everything.
I'm with you there. I'm not very involved in the youtube community, but this seems to crop up in any online community I've ever observed, and I think some of it comes from a misguided perception that more people viewing and "liking" your media is a sign that you are more connected and communal and whatnot, and in others' eyes, everything that naturally follows. It seems like a replacement for actual, meaningful connection with people.

You're absolutely right. I've had that attitude for a long time (and it's exceedingly obvious now when viewing my uploaded videos) and it's crippled me from being productive on youtube and in general. Perfectionism is definitely a bad thing. However sloppy work is also a bad thing, and I can't completely disabuse myself of "do it right or don't do it at all" so my problem seems to be finding a good middle-ground. Ever since I was a child I'd start off strong, find a few problems, then just quit.

By "online community", I mean someplace such as facebook. Big, "communal" websites.

I also agree. Honesty, sincerity, openness, and other qualities that bring about respectful human connectedness are qualities that matter.
