I've heard this version of Jack in the Box before, I think it may even be from a John Peel session? I've never heard a full length version of it though, it always seems to cut off around the second chorus. There's different version floating around without the melodic guitar part, but I really like this version better. Anyone know if the full length version of this is available anywhere?
Yes, I've had that documentary since 1996, with Ken Stewart being the p.a. announcer. But, live, Jack in the Box only appears in early 1980 from the available sources I've seen. I wonder when exactly Edge started using the AC30, which has a sharp clean sound unless overdriven. Though there is an AC30 in the Street Mission overdub video from 1978.
If your copy of the doc is cleaner it would be great if you posted part of it. I'm not even sure mine is at the right speed since it was copied from audio cassettes at different speeds
The band is performing Street Mission in that footage, recorded in 1978, making that footage the oldest of the band performing live. Search "U2 Street Mission."
No it wasn't. I'm quite sure about that; they were other songs, such as Inside Out, tonight, Street Mission, Shadows and Tall Trees, The Fool, or others...
Historical Happiness.

It's got the Vox AC30 sound, and Edge wasn't using that till late 1979 or early 1980.

I'll bet you this was not 1978, sounds more like there 1979 or early 1980 sound. Really, not 1978.

Yes, April 1978. They won a contest and the prize was to record a few songs in a local studio. This was one of the songs.
