Thank you sooooooo much YouTube for allowing everyone the chance to see how good Soul music used to be, and how very far it's fallen. Heck, ALL music for that matter!
apparently Bootsy was fired after tripping balls on acid during a gig. he looked down at the neck of his bass and saw a snake looking up at him about to bite him on the face. he wigged out, threw his bass down and ran backstage. the godfather was not impressed
For all you who don't know, James Brown created more new dances than any entertainer then..and now...even Michael Jackson. Where do you think Mike got all his moves from...
@saanzacs Yea they were the original JB's. Most of these guys including the Collins brothers were new to the band and left after about a year. They were 15-20 years younger than Mr Brown and left because of the military style leadership of Mr Brown. He would fine them if they missed cues. Thats why on most of these videos they are fixated on Mr Brown waiting for his abrupt cues like "hit me!" "Bootsy!" "Band!"
This is classic stuff. Who knows why so much of the crowd...just sits. A great video is JB and BB KIng at the Beverly Theatre, with a very enthusiastic audience.

I just came in my pants!!!!!!!!!I've listened to the jb's for years and never heard this song.I own 2 boxsets of their music?? where has this been hiding?just like x-mas!!!!!
i believe that this version of give it up, was james' favorite tune to perform. it was a feel good song and it gets the crowd into the show. this tune did not have much in a lyrical way, but the groove , oh brother, the GROOVE, with everybody cooking at 300 degrees and bootsy layin' that funky bassline, how could you possibly sit still behind that? look through the crowd, there are so many heads bobbin', and hands clapping, some could not help themselves and got up to dance. that's my man.
This is a slamming tune and the Italians are just sitting there like its a church service(apart from a few). What the hell did these people listen too back in dem days.Lord have mercy.
james was tapping into a world we all call soul and funk way before it even had a name. he practically invented and paved the way to what we now know. james the hardest working man in show business.
@techxdabruiser You are correct, he started as a 19yearold along with a few other youngins. That crew helped usher in the the funk movement that was starting to explode r&b music. The thing is the group before bootsy left james brown because of financial issues so James called Bootsy and his boys and flew them in for a concert he had that same day if I'm not mistakened. James told them to just follow his lead. This was told by Bootsy Collins himself
@rjam1974 You just gotta check out Bobby Byrd's " I Need Help (I Can't Do It Alone)" ! Bootsy was fuckin' death on that . Even the late, great, Jaco Pastorius gave major props to Bootsy, for influencing him and you heard a little of Bootsy in Jaco's playing.
there should be a monument to James Brown in NYC or Washington - Americans should respect and celebrate these incredible innovators. James Brown almost single-handedly invented a new type of music.
There was funk yeah for sure but his insistence on minimalism and precision was something new entirely and influenced just about every aspect of music afterwards.
@nonskiwun James Brown was very strict on them and insisted on perfection. I think the group members were so in tuned with their music that the part with them trying to "get into it" really didn't play a factor
NObody is messing with james. He inspired hip hop techno funk house and most 4 and 8 bar created music not to mention the art of bboying and boogie. micheal jackson was great but he learned/stole his moves from electric boogaloos and jeffrey daniels .
They brought MJ into this because he's on the same list of innovators that you mentioned. And to say it look dated is rediculous, and there are people today making a living off of moonwalks and the robot that Jackson perfected. James Brown is amazing, btw lol
Not to nitpick, but this was March 1971, not April. The first week of April, they went into the Copa in New York where Bootsy and the rest of the gang quit (or were fired).

@8bobthebuilder THats absurd. Astaire could never rock a crowd like James could. But Im sure James could learn those made-for-cinema steps Astaire did (not even improvised mind you) and do it with more style and energy. Actually I take that back, James has too much energy, soul and explosiveness to be contained in film, he wouldnt be able to do it, he would go crazy. even looking strictly at footwork and technique, James is always flawlessly on beat with his steps and a lot more dynamic.
@8bobthebuilder James can creat illusions of gliding across stages and then the next second explode like...... Dynamite! Dont get me wrong though, I am a Fred fan but to say he has better footwork than James is ridiculous. I may be taking you too seriously. I hope you were joking!
in the 1970s, I was trained to play the cello and played in the orchestra. But behind the scenes I was a follower of soul and R&B. My other buddies followed rock n roll which was fine.
