Brilliant scene in the book. I love the idea that they are terrorizing this hick sheriff with all these horror stories! This mirrors the "Know Your Dope Fiend" propaganda film. Crazy ghost stories that scare the shit out of impressionable officers. The point of this scene and the drug conference scene is to show just how easy it is to spread bullshit stories. This guy went back and warned everyone to be on the lookout for cannibal hippy ex soldiers that eat pineal glands! HST was a genius!
@mindstormsabrewin - your tea-shades have given you the fear, the fear of being exposed as an adrenochrome-drinking participant in all forms of dark rituals
@JustSomePerson888 LOL. This scene shows how all those "Satanic ritual crimes" rumors spread. From one paranoid religious freak officer to another. Then ANY kid that listens to metal and wears black is held responsible for any unsolved crime that they can't figure out. And of course the kid's only a "bit player" in a "vast satanic network". All these dimwits need as proof of this imaginary conspiracy is a pentagram or some heavy metal band name scrawled on a wall in town somewhere. Dumb rubes.
this actually connects some of the other scenes in the movie, it would have been great if it was in a directors cut or something (Instead of seeing it several years after my first watch)
If they WOULD have placed this scene in the movie, it comes right after where they both leave the drug convention meeting... Atleast that's when it came in the book.
I KNEW I saw this scene somewhere! I saw the movie first and then read the book and thought I remembered seeing this scene in the movie. I went back and watched the movie twice more and didn't see it, and lo and behold a week later I find this video! Thank you!
My son Peter & I were extras in this movie. I just want to share that with everyone. I played the part of a former Miss Nevada & a D. A. date. My son who past away Oct. 16 , 2010 was a valet. I miss him so much but I feel comfort in the things we shared together such as this movie.
This bit always cracked me up in the book, and I was sad they didn't have it in the movie, I can see why they edited it out though, it would have been difficult to keep it in because the pace of the second half of the movie is so manic, this would have slowed it down. Great to see this scene on screen though, it's a really funny bit.
they took this out because it paints witchcraft as a violent and despicable practice. and as some of you may know, the entertainment industry/hollywood has many ppl who practice witchcraft.
@harshLesson Heh, I don't even want to know how many in the industry consciously follow La Vey'an satanism. Would seem like the ideal playground for hedonist pricks like that.
@Pixelrid3r what is wrong with Le Vayan satanism? i mean, yes there are assholes who follow it, but please do elaborate, in a private message, i dont want to debate about it, i just want your whole story before i get offended by yet another person tearing down my faith.
@harshLesson Nonsense, it would have been taken out for pacing reasons not for content. They mention satanism and witchcraft in other parts of the film.
@SethHesio ya they mention it but they dont paint it in a negative light and they are not specific about locations eg. malibu. btw i live close to malibu and i can tell you first hand that that city is full of rich, movie industry folks who are all new age and all into kaballah and witchcraft
@harshLesson Dr Gonzo talks about a sanism freak who's a pedophile in the scene where Raoul Duke takes adrenochrome... "why would I fuck kids, they're too small". Terry Gilliam wouldn't take a scene out of a film because of something like this. Nonsense.
@harshLesson - it's not that black and white. Whose adrenocrome was it. Note the throat-cut recurring motif. Remember that LSD etc lets you - use time more loosely let's say. Note Gonzo's altered Nixon poster and his mimic of the post-resignation victory-V's. Note he transforms into Baphomet during the adrenocrome trip.
Note Hunter's mention of Howard Hughes in the Criterion DVD commentary.
@harshLesson Yeah, if you pay close attention to what hunter is trying to say in the movie, he was into the same type of stuff. I mean sacrificing people for fame and fortune. He won't come out and say it, but theres scenes in the movie that insinuates that he was involved in those practices.
@harshLesson I don't think thats the real reason, I just think it dosen't fit in.. They do have parts of this with the guy on the telephone while hes tripping when he first walks in... It just didn't fir the flow of the movie...
@gotafunnyface Johnny Depp lived with Thompson to study him. he made stay in his basement . I do believe that mr Thompson was quite impressed by his performance
@gotafunnyface Johnny and Hunter were friends. While making the movie, Johnny lived with Hunter for months. Hunter even shaved Johnny's head the "right way" for the film.
i feel like the scenes deleted from this movie were the more realistic ones that would of helped the story line. i remember the first time watching the movie and not knowing much about hunter thompson at all really, and being confused as to what was going on. this scene really helps out the whole journalism part which actually took me a couple times of watching the movie to realize that that was what raul duke was, a journalist.
There is a scene in the movie where Duke is taking Gonzo to the airport towards the end of the movie.... but if you watch you will notice that DUke's ear is bleeding is there a reason for that ??
I remember this part in the book, when Duke is sitting down in the casino talking with those cops with Dr. Gonzo. I always wondered why it wasn't in the movie. Now I see why it wasn't because the flow of the movie would have slowed down a little bit....
@Pixelrid3r: The E-donkey? I do refrain form any kind of donkeys as France in currently governed by a donkey and one of them is more than enough; it would be rather interesting how these scenes got to that place as they most come from someone close to the making of the movie.
Sure they can - didn't you see them in the background on King of Tears TV later on? The Anubis chamber - it was right there, don't know how you could've missed it.
yeah that scene in the book threw me sideways, but the descision to remove this scene from the film was a good descision, in my opinoion. it leaves something in the book, becasue about everything elese was bang on...
would have loved to meet HST or OZA in real life... :P

This scene didn't make it because bad chemisty, supposed mumbling on Del Toro's side and an overall mediocre taste in the mouth.
