Brilliant scene in the book. I love the idea that they are terrorizing this hick sheriff with all these horror stories! This mirrors the "Know Your Dope Fiend" propaganda film. Crazy ghost stories that scare the shit out of impressionable officers. The point of this scene and the drug conference scene is to show just how easy it is to spread bullshit stories. This guy went back and warned everyone to be on the lookout for cannibal hippy ex soldiers that eat pineal glands! HST was a genius!

This bit always cracked me up in the book, and I was sad they didn't have it in the movie, I can see why they edited it out though, it would have been difficult to keep it in because the pace of the second half of the movie is so manic, this would have slowed it down. Great to see this scene on screen though, it's a really funny bit.

@harshLesson - it's not that black and white. Whose adrenocrome was it. Note the throat-cut recurring motif. Remember that LSD etc lets you - use time more loosely let's say. Note Gonzo's altered Nixon poster and his mimic of the post-resignation victory-V's. Note he transforms into Baphomet during the adrenocrome trip.

Note Hunter's mention of Howard Hughes in the Criterion DVD commentary.

@harshLesson Yeah, if you pay close attention to what hunter is trying to say in the movie, he was into the same type of stuff. I mean sacrificing people for fame and fortune. He won't come out and say it, but theres scenes in the movie that insinuates that he was involved in those practices.

i feel like the scenes deleted from this movie were the more realistic ones that would of helped the story line. i remember the first time watching the movie and not knowing much about hunter thompson at all really, and being confused as to what was going on. this scene really helps out the whole journalism part which actually took me a couple times of watching the movie to realize that that was what raul duke was, a journalist.
