It is now 5 years after this broadcast and the war still rages. There have been two major votes against this war; the lose of control of the GOP house in 2006 and the presidential election in 2008, where the voters mandated their representatives to stop the war and nothing has happened. Does anyone still think after 5 years of votes not controlling the direction of the country, that this is still a democracy.
All conflicts are supposed to be clean, easy and short aren't they? No. No they aren't and this is not new. As the American Civil War was coming to a close, the South was considering transforming to guerilla warfare, and this was the North's worst nightmare. Guerilla warfare can go on for years, even generations, with little support and minimal cost. Basically, the Islamists need volunteers for suicide missions, and there seems to be no end to that.
It's really a slap in the face to the gay community that Andrew Sullivan hasn't come out of the closet yet. Just like Ted Haggard, some youtube users like VenomFangX and Kabanethechristian, nothing, absolutely nothing could be more obvious than that Sullivan is a straight up homosexual.
@ThePuzzler81 I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure that Andrew Sullivan is openly homosexual. I thought I saw him on one C-SPAN interview (also with Hitch) talking about his long-term male partner. I seem to remember that he mentioned he was HIV positive as well.
@ThePuzzler81 It is no mystery that Andrew Sullivan is married to a man. I honestly think it's respectable that he doesn't make it his first foot forward at every interview.
The main problem with the war is that the politicians running it are absolute morons and unparalleled hypocrites. If Bush didn't try to ban flag burning and gay marriage or pass he fascist homeland security act then he might have had a leg to stand on when it came time to talk about "Freedom" and "Democracy" in Iraq. Unfortunately the Grand Old Party no longer enforces any of its own ideals of "small government". Hitchens constantly says that it always should have been a war of the left.
@wovokanarchy *rolleyes* He is consistent, is what he is. And now he endorses Obama over the republicans, and, btw, did so before Obama was even elected. People don't like Hitchens because he refuses to be either a conservative or liberal. He thinks liberals are cowards, and that republicans are close minded. He was never a 'Bushyte' he just agreed with some things Bush did. Don't imply that he's a ship jumper of some sort. He still IS a mmarxist, btw.
@BigLundi 1 example is being against arbitrary American imperialism and aggression in Vietnam and now supporting the war in Iraq which is basically the same war based on the same lie. How is that for a start?
@wovokanarchy Wrong. He supports the war in Iraq because he's far more against ruthless, immoral dictators killing their own people en mass, and the idea that a madman like Saddam had access to materials concerning WMD's was definately threatening news. Or would you have rather waited until Saddam HAD the WMD's before we went over there? How do you think that would have played out? We'd be in the same situation we're in with North Korea now.
@BigLundi You've just lost the arguement. Relying on ol' hackneyed excusesfor the war that have been shown to be all a pack of lies emanating from Bush's arsehole. Try expanding your news sources from FOX "news''/
@wovokanarchy I don't watch Fox News at all actually. And you just lost the argument, because you just said that saddam's ruthless regime being bad for his people is a lie. And it most certinaly is not. Try and expand your sources from something other than public opinion.
@BigLundi Saddam was a very "bad" guy. No one disputes that. The thing is he stopped being "America's bad guy'' and that's what got him in trouble. There are 100s of "bad" leaders in the world. Does America have the right to unilaterally invade and murder 100 000s of these countries' citizens? The fact your evading is Iraq and Vietnam are both wars of similar scope and lies and Hitchens flip flopped on these two wars.
@wovokanarchy Vietnam was a war about communism, Iraq was a war about a dictator having access to the materials necessary to make WMD's. NO, he didn't have the WMD's themselves, but we found the materials to make them, he was in poisition to make them. He didn't flip flop. Also, you clearly haven't read Christopher Hitchens' "A Long Short War" nor saw his debate with Tariq Ali iback in 07. If you had done either, you'd know he's not a neoconservative. You lose.
@BigLundi AMerica ''found the materials to make" WMD's? Total bollocks. Did you just pull that one straight out of your ass? Send me the link where I can read the document that states that? That would be great but I've followed the news about the war in Iraq and no such article has ever materialized on the subject. If it had the GOP would have constantly been harping about it, even at election time. So if a country is communist then it's fair to invade a country unilaterally? How about Cuba?
@wovokanarchy Wiki this exact phrase, "Iraq and weapons of mass destruction"
We found bunkers filled with chemical weapons, and materials to implement them. They also had old WMD programs that were, with full intent, to be restored as soon as the U.N. lifted its sanctions on the country. What news do you listen to? Do you read any objective sources? And for your informatyion, Vietnam was already at War when we got there, we just helped. And for Cuba, I never said it was fair to invade
@wovokanarchy Nobody, not I, nor Hitchens said it was ok to invade a country because they are communists. It IS ok to invade a country that is run by a dangerous madman that has access to lethal materials ad kills his own people en mass. The ONLY reason we don't invade N. Korea is because they actually HAVE nukes, and we don't want that madman Kim to set them off, even if they can't reach US they can reach our allies.
@wovokanarchy And we even actually DID invade Korea, and if it weren't for Truman, we wouldn't have had to leave without first disarming the situation there. But so far it has semi-worked out, S. Korea is developing monumentally in comparison with its northern neighbor. In fact, South Korea might even take care of the North Korea problem for us.
Major newscasters always introduce guests from their own perspective, adding a bunch of "facts" to set the tone for the interview. Then they try to skip past that and move on to other questions without giving their guests the opportunity to dispute the claims made in the intro. While Hitchens does come off a little arrogant, at least he is willing to interrupt and correct someone when they make assumptions or if the "facts" they're presenting are just plain wrong.
@lepolemicist Well they are simple minded, to them anyone who supports the war is a conservative, even though its a war against conservatives in the Islamic world...
These unprepared "journalists" must feel their blood drain from their faces when they realized they've tweaked Hitchens. His about 10 levels intellectually above them.
I wouldnt call him intelligent from what I have seen (last hour browsing youtube, open to debate) but just has common sense. He takes things at arms length and then makes sure he understands something before going into it as opposed to following herd mentality.
Detached, analytical and wise, intelligence is somewhat overrated in comparison to the other three in my opinion.
But what is intelligence, other than (in part, anyway) detached analytical wisdom?
He's no genius - we'll leave that for the physicians, astonomers and quantum theorists, but then again the average quantum mechanics wonk probably couldn't give you a dissertation of Sunni-Shia historicity in Southern Iraq. Intelligence does, after all, come in many forms. Application and dedication to acquiring knowledge is not an insignificant manifestation of those forms.
In my opinion intelligence means you can learn faster than others. No more, no less, itas just the rate at which you can assimilate new knowlege into your mindset to the point you know it intuitively.
uccomic Hitchens got a third class degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics. These degrees are handed out just for turning up to student lectures.
