I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. This past Sunday (June 8), we sang this as our Hymn of the Day. It is #860 in Evangelical Lutheran Worship in the Praise, Thanksgiving section. I played this at another Lutheran church when I filled in for them 4 years ago. Just thought I'd share.
This reminds me of my old pentecostal church in Timaru, New Zealand, back in the 1970s - great music. Thanks for this, Brad. I just discovered you today looking for different interpretations of "Silent Night". Keep 'em coming.
Thank you! I was singing and harmonizing with you all the way!
Praise GOD!!!

I'm an ELCA Lutheran also, but I learned it years ago from the playing of Elizabeth Cotten
(who wrote Freight Train) and singing of her granddaughter...

Yes, the song is out of the African American church, learned from Elizabeth Cotten's playing, but inspired by the style of Joseph Spence
