No, their problem is that they learned that he was a very average singer, that just about every living person knows someone directly who is a better singer than Sanjaya. He has little talent. He can hit a few simple, small notes but, he isn't good. It may not have been a song for it, but he flat out CAN'T DO IT regardless of the song. That is their problem with him.

I think most of the guest mentors saw what Simon was either too blind, ignorant or stubborn to see, which was the charisma that makes one have "star quality" even without the best or biggest voice.
I've heard most of his performances and I certainly wouldn't say he "sucks." If he sucked that badly he wouldn't have passed the initial rounds where the judges had the decision to let him stay or not. It's funny that Simon and Randy were always the hardest on him, yet they were the ones that let him in, in the first place! You reap what you sow.
My theory has always been that he rubbed people the wrong way for other reasons that had nothing to do with the singing. The singing just became the excuse. He always had a nice voice but on the show didn't always put a lot of "oomph" into it like some of the others, with all the runs and vocal gymanstics. The judges panned a couple of performances as "boring" moreso than his actual vocal delivery. But I think a few picked up on that as "he can't sing" then the media ran like wildfire with it.
