  • It is a shame...So what if its Jazzy its just a different take on it and its awesome...I love the original but it was written over 30 years ago and the dead has gone through many different sounds since then..Some good Some bad...Think about there eighties electronic stage with "In the Dark" or "Built to last"...this is just a different sound that Phil wanted to do...and it sounds great!

  • Its a shame so many old Deadheads became,, well ,, just too old, cranky, miserable, never satisfied with anything. Since they know going in they will hate anything post-JG I wonder why they bother to listen, attend, or waste everyones time with their self-serving chatter. Hey,, it will never be as good without Jerry, but at least I'm enjoying the ride!

  • awesome variation!!!

  • Different tastes, I guess. With the talent assembled here, I think they nailed the spirit of the original with class. I mean, hey, Jerry often sounded like he was channeling a sax player's riffs.

  • id give anything to be on that stage with scofield and phil

  • Joan is the sexiest woman alive. Miss the Dead...seen 56 shows!

  • Joan Osborne is great, but this version is crap. It's turned into some smooth jazz thing. This is horrible compared to the original. Actually, I really hate this for some reason. As soon as the sax man started playing it just ...man, I can't put my finger on it. Let's just say a cameo by Kenny G. would be perfect. Not knocking the talent at all. Just seems like the soul is missing.

  • So I guess you didn't like Donna G. either?

  • did anyone? She sucked and so did Keith

  • and its just a song that i only want to listen if jerry sings it its not meant to have a female lead sing it i just dont care for her voice at all or any female voice singing a dead song

  • I agree with you on this song, but there are tons of dead and jerry songs that she and other woman sound great. Attics, brokedown, sugree to name a few

  • Phil has a good voice hes just old and sings some of the dead's best songs unbroken chain is amazing

  • that "bitch" is joan osborne. haha she is very good and very well respected.

  • mabee, but she sounds bad on this........

  • i have this DVD its amazing...but Phil definitely shoulda sung this...i cant stand that bitches voice

  • Phil has a horrible voice, there is no way he should sing. The tour with Osborne and Warren Haynes was much better than his most recent one.

  • far out . Excited about New Years in SF ! thx for the inspiration ...

  • phil lesh, master of syncopation, the funkiest dude on the planet!...you taught me everything i know about the flow!....its been so long ,i hope to see you again soon. time for my 101st show!...peace and love from jay!

  • Phil Lesh has such a distinct sound as a bassist that exudes the Dead.

  • enter: two extra strings, and avante garde training.

  • Dead was the first band to play stereo sound on stage. Phil had each string going to a different set of speakers.

  • Anyone going to there show tonight. Its going to be in Alpharetta GA.

  • I fucking love Larry Campbell. I wish he'd bust out the mandolin and fiddle more often, though.

  • I saw them at the nokia on 11/2 and he used the fiddle once and the mandolin was used in a jam that was uncle johns band-china cat-the eleven-the elevator-i know you rider. Amazing

  • Minus Osby, this was probably my favorite Friends lineup. Not that the PLQ wasn't awesome, but Larry and Scofield just blow my mind.

  • osby was crazy at new year's when he played with The Dead a few years back.

    the head was smoothy!

  • Jackie gave everyone in the gold circle autographs in richmond... lol people were having him sign their J papers and what have you not.

  • CARL!!!!!!

  • True I'll still go see either band as long as they're touring.

  • How immature to post a comment like that.

If you can't see, hear and feel the musical greatness of this band then your a musical retard. Phil's current band is great too. Sad as it is to say, Jerry couldn't have played a solo like that in '95... and the band couldn't pull off a decent show at that point.

However this band is great. I'm getting stoked to see them at All Good this year.

  • i dont wnana be a buzz kill but i saw them on halloween with new guitarist Jackie greene and man it sounded like a poor quality grateful dead cover band....now ratdog on the other hand....WOW!

Not hating on phil, he's the man i just think he was better without jackie greene

  • Well sorry you feel that way man. More room for me to shake my ass. You make that judgment based on one show you saw... ??

Ratdog... I'm sorry but I can't watch/listen to Help (or any other tune) get played at 40 bpm... I love Bobby I just wish he would kick it up to a danceable tempo.

  • Well, im not passin any judgement im just sayin i saw them halloween and it was a bit of a let down....i also saw them minus jackie green summer of 06' and they were amazing....

And yes, bobby has been slowing things down but i saw him at wanee recently and that was a danceable kickin ass show....i was also trippin nutts! =]

No point in arguing, as long as these bands are touring we should go and support regardless of who you think's better....theyre both original dead heads

  • dude thats funny. i saw phil and friends a few weeks ago.. and jackie blew me and all my friends out of the water. that guy can sing and play like no other. not saying your wrong, its just funny how people can see the same thing and take polar opposites from it.

  • oh yeah alot of people were feeling them on halloween too, i think i was just expectin more jammin and they were just going thru song after song like with barely any jamming....but they did do a nasty cover of Phish's "story of a ghost", that was by far the highlight of my night being that i never got the chance to hear that live by my favorite 4 fellas

and trey would give his left nut to play yem 5 times a day? i smell a re-union!! =] (back off and let me dream haters)

  • im seeing phil tommrow

  • me 2 at summerfest

  • i got a chance to see phil and friends last october with jackie AND trey, man was that an amazing show! no doubt the kid can sing, but he just cant throw down like try can

  • actually, a Phish reunion may be very likely. Page McConnel has been hinting recently that 09 is the year that it's gonna happen. (provided trey has his crap together)

  • LAME......it was done and over in 95" ....as you can see....nothing even close without Jer.

  • slipknot!

  • Fuck Slipknot.

  • The band. Haha. The song is awesome.

  • joan osborne! i SEEN THE DEAD AT bonnaroo 2003 it was amazing!

  • ?? Forget about it. It's all about Sco and Lesh. Two masters accompanied by some other people.

  • don't forget rob barraco, phil's chairman of the 'boards --- he's unbelievable!

  • phil needs to bring out greg osby wayyy moreee

  • what if JOAN was one of us???

  • can't wait for allgood this year. phil, widespread, gov't mule... hell yeah

  • Grate song. thanks

  • I heart Joan, I like this group of friends

  • Yeah I agree Larry Campbell is the man. He rocks on Levon Helm's new album, as well.

  • I cant stop listening to this its not even on the cd for this show, Joan blends in so well

  • favorite dead tune, favorite female singer, what a show

  • 10klf baby 08

  • Ok, its official. I'm horny for Joan Osborne. What a hottie and a great voice too.

  • why do they cut the song ahhhh

  • please post more of this show

maybe the tape got too close to Joan and it melted

  • fuckin amazing guitarist too

  • Larry Campbell is my dads cousin and i met him for the first time like 2 weeks ago...probably one of the coolest guys ive ever met.

  • NARLY I say many concerts of 'em is he nce?

  • I Love Joan Osborne singing with the dead. She was great at the route 66 conert in IL with the Dead!

  • I was there and she was sweet! I heard her parents were roadies for The Dead and she used to travel w/ them as a kid.

  • SWEET!! I LOVE Joan. Thanks for not singing, Phil.

  • yeah Phil!

  • I hope as this performance continued, Scofield took the reigns on the slip jam because Campbell's first solo had absolutely nothing to say.

  • Hmm yeah, I think what made it so bland is that he had didn't let it breath dynamically. All his notes were phrased with the same touch and volume.

  • This just seems like a smooth jazz band doing GD covers for people that can't seem to move on, no offense to anyone here. I'm struck by how beautiful Joan looks in this clip though.

  • I agree entirely. I'd rather see Spyro Gyra or the Yellow Jackets handle this genre of music. They do a much better job of it.

And yes, that lady looks classy and well proportioned.

    Peace

  • waking up from last nights show and it was sick "SHAKEDOWN"sweet set 1,2great show man!"FADE AWAY"encore!absolutely savage!rock on phil....

  • it still kills me that Jerry's gone. to me, this is just another sad reminder. I prefer DSO

  • If That is the case for you than sadly, you just never "GOT IT" DSO is mimic. What Bob and Phil are Doing now is Evolution and Jery is very much "Alive" and present in spirit during all of these Shows. He glows through Joan. Pleas reconsider and try a live show. I have seen Jerry 52 times.

  • I also saw Jerry 50+ times and I did in fact, just recently see Phil and Ratdog. I also saw DSO just last weekend and my feelings are not changed. They completely ROCKED! I guess I just happen to think that Jerry comes through better through John Kadlecik than Joan Osbourne (who had to quickly learn all these songs to perform them!) I happen to think I did "get it" but we can disagree and still be friends. We both love and miss Jerry and that's the most important thing.

  • Absolutly, now that is "Getting It".. I guess I have just found a way of letting go that suits me.. I am missing phil this weekend bexcause of a bad back problem but I hope to see Bobby in Reading in Nov. Phil at the new Woodstock Venue was oozing with Jerry Vibes last year....

  • fuck yeah dude. phils bass was perfect. the mix was great and joan,,,whoa.help on the way baby!

  • Where's Slipknot!/Franklin's Tower??????????

  • Way too short

  • A Little off topic, did any of you read Phils book "Searching for the Sound"? I like the story when The Grateful Dead went to the Opera. Everyone dressed up in suits, they pick up Jerry Garcia and he is in his sweat suit. Then Jerry nods off in the Deads special Opera box, Mickey Hart jabs him with a sweedish meatball fork to wake him up. Also the story about Phil and Bear going out to dinner in New Orleans. Bear doesn't like his steak and puts it in the ashtray.

  • that was a GREAT book.

    on of my favorites.

  • Never mind, it's a mic right?

I'm watching good day LA, and Jillian Barberie Reynolds, back from 3 months maternity leave, is hooking up a similiar device on the back of her stunning red dress.

    Love ya Joan and Jillian!

  • "Never mind, it's a mic right?"

Close. She has a in-ear moniter. What you are seeing is the wireless receiver.(ehhh.. the mic is in front of her);-)

Fine fine song; my favorite and Joan does it right.

    Thanks for posting this.

  • These guys are good!

Hey musicians, those of you "in the know". What is that device on Joan Osborne's upper back shoulders, just below her neck? First see it around 2:50.

  • My favorite song too. Scofield is cool and Phil rules like allways!

  • one of my favorite songs. and i even love phils tone with a pick

  • Come on to rag on Phil too much, he has nice equiment..... :-)

  • here are my deadheads-wow!

  • Sorry, was not trying to offend anyone, I just never got round to buying or listening to anything by Grateful Dead, I guess at the time the music I was listening to fulfilled all of my needs at the time. Sorry :-)

  • I have not seen this bass player before. I would have to agree with you that his sound is unique, but unique because very few bass players play with a pick, because it limits your sound so much. Using a pick means almost every note sounds the same, same attack/same decay etc. It just reminds me of all those old '60's ballads by Englebert Humperdinck, and Des O Conner. Sound is subjective and very personal, but I would love to have heard "Help on the Way" with a "fingers" bass player.

  • Basstutor, he definatley has a very recognizable smooth tone....he's also been doing this for 40 plus years and this is his signature sound. If anything, I'd say it's much more unique than many other players tones.

  • Great tune, great groove, lovely singer... all good but the bass player using a pick totally destroyed it for me, use your fingers man and get your tone back.

  • Agreed. Most politicians are shady and Kerry ran a terrible campaign...But Bush and his scumbags are EVIL. Lies, cover ups, treason...we could go on forever. 1/20/09...Bush's last day!!

  • If there were any justice, we'd put Bush/Cheney and company on trial, and eventually most members of his cabinet would get the needle. (A man can fantasize can't he?) Kerry wasn't great, but he's no more comparable to Bush than Hanna Montana is to Phil Lesh and Friends.

  • dont bring your crap to videos like this

  • dont bring your crap to videos like this

  • Bush is the Worst President in American History. Disgraceful on so many levels its disturbing. At least Kerry actually fought in the War that Bush avoided while snorting coke. Enough said.

  • Nice post ;-)

  • Sure I would, there was a whole big to do about some of his medals. Look it up online or in the news, you'll find it.

  • your probably right...i should listen to fox more...they would really know

  • Joan is so fuckin' sexy !!!

  • right but Bush seems is obviously more patriotic. I would never vote for a guy who threw the medals he didn't even deserve on the ground. Total idiot.

  • why would you say he didnt deserve them...you wouldent have any idea.

  • Bush's patriotism is demonstrated by the fact that he cheated his way into office, repeatedly lied to the country, continually violates his oath of office, illegally spies on Americans, turned us into a torture state, etc. Not enough space to list his crimes here. I refer you to a collections of essays called "Impeach The President: The Case Against Bush And Cheney", edited by Dennis Loo & Peter Phillips, publisher: Seven Stories Press. Only hermits and oil moguls still don't hate Bush.

  • What the fuck is this, then? Bush is a criminal bastard, sure, but this is music. He doesn't deserve to be discussed in its presence.

  • well, same here but Bush was sure as hell more appealing than idiot kerry

  • I get pissed everytime i see that stupid kerry sticker

  • guys go get the dvd of this show it's awesome

  • larry campbell makes this band sound good.larry plays the guitar just like ringin'a bell.the dude has got some skills without a doubt

  • I love this!

  • This is killer. Way tighter than the Dead ever could pull it off.

  • Since when were the Dead about being tight? To me, they were about being loose! Unless they go far beyond the original, isn't it sort of silly to praise imitators over the original? Jerry didn't have himself to follow when he invented the guitar parts in the first place. I do like Joan though; it's a shame she never sang with them when Jerry was alive.

  • Phil Lesh & friends are playing at Mountain Jam III

go to mountain jam fest dot com and check it out say Eric sent you!

  • i like it when phil sings. be a donor. tell your family.

  • best dead song,imo.

  • Love this tune!

  • Joan is hot. This song was made for her voice.

  • phil is a shaman...

  • Joan's voice is excellent. get out of the rut thinking guys who can't sing are great singers while you diss great singers. Joan Osborne is a great singer, he timing, pitch and precision is dynamic and right on.

  • I agree with you on one point. Her voice is really good, and she does a great job on this song, but I just like Jerry's mysteriouso tone in his voice when he sang it (RIP). By guys who can't sing you better not mean Jerry!

  • heres hoping for a speedy recovery for Phil!

  • scofield on left, cambell on right...

  • anybody? isn't that scofield? anybody?

  • What the . . . ? It cuts out right where Molo kicks into overdrive for a few bars. You're killin' me over here!

  • joan is spicy hot both the sound and visual she provides is stunning. This is a great show and you should buy it!

  • I found both Kimmock and Warren Haynes fustratingly disappointing; so talented, so much promise, but seldom delivered the goods. Joan has a smooth voice which is uncharacteristic of GD, but it is high quality, and for once I enjoyed the singing to China Doll- Jerry always hurt my ears on that one. Check out Irvine '03.

  • Joan cheesy? LOL! She's the best thing that's happened in the GD world post-Garcia (besides Kimock, who was unfortunately run off).

  • jeez people.

    shes amazing.

    i love her voice.

    who else would do it?

    so shush.

  • Joan sucks. It's the same with Donna Godchaux in times with the dead. She destroy's all the Concerts from 73 to 79 with her "voice".

  • Love the song and the band - just wish Joan wasn't singing this, she has a really cheezy cotail-jazz sound to her voice.
