Насчет защищенности также не соглашусь особенно если глянуть на Т-90М, но тут дело в том что все советские танки начиная с т-34 это танки плотной или иногда даже сверхплотной компоновки начиная с 1980-х она явна уступает танкам разуплотненной компоновки по целому ряду параметров + большая пожароопасность.
@otzelot68 Конечно, сокращение боевого отделения и соответственно высвободившийся вес можно потратить на усиленное бронирование + большая скорострельность, последние автоматы заряжения делают до 18 выстрелов в минуту. Можно вобще сократить экипаж до 2 человек при современном СУО.
В России вполне есть современная ветроника и БИУС их уже неоднократно показывали, кроме того самое совершенное СУО в мире на модифицированном леклерке.

there isn't a single tank in the world capable to withstand advanced AT missles without active protection systems, which were installed this winter. RPG's never did any damage to the merkava. i had friends who came back from lebanon with dozens of RPG hits and didn't even notice it until they got home. the armour of the merkava is considered one of the best in the world by the way, and the engine in the front means more protection. the back is safer then most tanks though

modern tank warfare didnt happen since 1991, and even that battle was with American tanks generations ahead of their Iraqi counterparts. i believe that todays tanks, in which have all 120mm smoothbore of rifled cannons will kill any other modern tank in a single shot. todays tank warfare if theoratically happen will be a cat and mouse game similar to sniper warfare. it will be fought at ranges anywhere from a mile to 3 miles where communication and fast reaction will be the most important.

I find it so non entertaining when various western tank fans fight with each other as to which is 'better'. Most western tanks use same standard ammunition(120mm NATO), chobham composite armour, weigh 55-60tons, have decent electronic and fire control packages. So what if some tank goes 3 km/h faster, shoots 100 m further or is more accurate by 0.0001%. All western MBTs are designed for the same doctrine and hence similar levels of performance, so stop wasting your time comparing them.

I prefer to judge weapon capability by comparing it against its international contemporaries and crew capability by comparing their level of training against their opponent. Training is expensive, especially tank gunnery. Rich countries can afford to spend a lot more.

the secret of success???? what success against stones throwers in Gaza and South Bank, or in south Lebanon where it was the weakest weapon in the battle field, and instead of using it as a main battle tank, it's used as an ambulance to carry back the dead and wounded solders, I didn't talk yet about failing against hand held anti armored weapons.
I know its a little late to tell you but the Russian tanks are a lot harder to hit and have much better protection then the ones the NATO/whoever had managed to destroy in any war. The T-72 clones (Asad Babil) that blew up in Iraq had no more then 300mm of RHA, no ERA, rounds obsolete since '73 that can't kill anything. Not hard to kill at all by modern tank. Its really hard to hit a well-driven T-80/90 unless you fire ATGM. T-80/90 has APS (Shtora-1, Arena, auto-smoke grenades) since mid-80s
Best is a push, but I would not deny that it is a very impressive one. I would put this one at number 2 right behind the abrams, I still think it is better than the ch2 or leo2.
You are really making a strech comparrison here. The CH2 is as much like the centurion as this is. That is to say, they are both tanks, but that's about as far as it goes.
No really, the Isrealies took their centurions, turned thema round and moved the engine bay to the front and called it the MErkava 1. If you dont belive me serch for any of the discovery channels/military channels top 10 tnaks and listien to Dr Nuasbacher from Sandhurst talking about it.
This is the MK4, the interior layout is different from the centurion, the engine, the gun, the target system (which original centurions lacked entirely), everything, is all different. But yeah, I guess its a centurion.

The CH2 has no numbers (neither does the merkava really, but it has significantly more than the CH2), and the leo2 has lots of issues. For one, the leo2 has a poor repair record with the nations that have it, it hasn't seen combat (meaning that operators of it are rookies), and it doesn't have that many either. Total it has 3600, but those are all spread thin among many nations.
Numbers arent evreything, especially in the right enviroment. 2 Isrealli Centurions that became damaged manged to destroy 60 syrian tanks ont he golan heights over 30+hours in the yom kippur war. Of course the more tanks you have the bigger the advantage. In the cold war, if russia had gone to war with hato they belived for evrey 1 tank we lost they woudl lose 20-30, they had the numbers but we had better tanks, cheiftan for example.
Evidence from WWII proves otherwise. The Sherman had something like a 1:10 kill:killed ratio with the tiger, but there was a 15:1 production ratio. Numbers may not be everything, but they are very near to it. Numbers are the most significant single part of any tank, especially when stats are as close as they are with many modern tanks.
That is ture, hwoever how you use the tanks plays a big part in how effective they are. But most of the best MBT's today, maybe even the top 6 or 7 are all from NATO allied countrys, so there's never really going to be a time when they go head to head with each other. Now that Jordan have the CHallanger 1's, if they ever go to war with isrela again then we may get an insight as to which is superior
If Jordan goes to war with Israel, they will use the RPG-32 that penetrated a meter of chobham-style multi-layer armor in testings. It was designed to even get through active protection systems such as Iron Fist, Trophy, Arena, Drozd1/2. Not trying to bag any tank, but anti-tank rounds are VERY powerful today.
As for what tank is the best? I honestly doubt that T-90 or late versions of T-80 are in any way inferior to ANY NATO tank. With missiles and over 4km shot range its a VERY strong foe

At that time, US APFSDS were neutralised by ERA Kotankt 5, Flankers and Fulcrums outclassed F-15s and F-16s kinematically and in avionics, soviet SA-10 were more then capable of taking out B-1 and even B-2 thanks to low-freq radars that brought the missile close enough for SAM to see it. T-80 and T-72 were armed with ATGMs. Finally against the US navy, they use Backfire-Cs, Bears and Blackjacks with Supersonic anti-ship missiles

F-16 lost 49 dogfights out of 50 to MiG-29. Backfire-C is a bomber. Soviet missiles are supersonic which Phalanz couldnt guide and when come within 3 km from target they fly erratic patterns that cant be locked onto.

i disagree, i live in israel and i see many Merkava tanks, they are great - the best, in israel. they are designed to israeli needs - israeli terrain, israeli tactics and israeli enemies. but outside of israel (and its surrounding countries) or no in the hands of the IDF (israeli defense forces) -it can be a real drawback. for example - they are made as defensive tanks (heavy, armored, firepower). they were build to rocky terrain. the american and german tanks were build as "multipurpose tanks".
once israel gets trophy on all there armored vehicles.... hezbollah will be screwed.... the only advantage they have is there shitload of anti tank weapons.....

the fact is that only 2 Merkava 4 tanks were damaged beyond repair. one from an IED and one from korenet missiles.
one merkava tank was hit by 25 missles before taking damage. so they are as solid as the best of tanks.
that same missile has gone thought Abrams.
and now they put the trophy system on the Merkava tanks which has already proven in battle against a Kornet missile.

Насчет защищенности также не соглашусь особенно если глянуть на Т-90М, но тут дело в том что все советские танки начиная с т-34 это танки плотной или иногда даже сверхплотной компоновки начиная с 1980-х она явна уступает танкам разуплотненной компоновки по целому ряду параметров + большая пожароопасность.

@otzelot68 Конечно, сокращение боевого отделения и соответственно высвободившийся вес можно потратить на усиленное бронирование + большая скорострельность, последние автоматы заряжения делают до 18 выстрелов в минуту. Можно вобще сократить экипаж до 2 человек при современном СУО.
В России вполне есть современная ветроника и БИУС их уже неоднократно показывали, кроме того самое совершенное СУО в мире на модифицированном леклерке.

I know most tanks have weak or less armour in the back but the merkava designer have gone as far as putting a airhole in the back......... no doubt about stupid otherwise a great tank for open plain conflict, not urban conflict such as the ones they currently face.

@Zyamaman on a final note just in case you havent been humilated enough if i were to shoot a rpg-7 at the back door of the merkava im pretty sure it would pentrate. however good that laminated compsite armour is im sure the back door wont stop a rpg. firstly it isnt sloped, well not aggresivley anyway, secondly the back door armour seems to be riduclously thin. so even if the rpg didnt pentrate im sure the crew be more then dilighted about the couple thosand J of energy.

there isn't a single tank in the world capable to withstand advanced AT missles without active protection systems, which were installed this winter. RPG's never did any damage to the merkava. i had friends who came back from lebanon with dozens of RPG hits and didn't even notice it until they got home. the armour of the merkava is considered one of the best in the world by the way, and the engine in the front means more protection. the back is safer then most tanks though

modern tank warfare didnt happen since 1991, and even that battle was with American tanks generations ahead of their Iraqi counterparts. i believe that todays tanks, in which have all 120mm smoothbore of rifled cannons will kill any other modern tank in a single shot. todays tank warfare if theoratically happen will be a cat and mouse game similar to sniper warfare. it will be fought at ranges anywhere from a mile to 3 miles where communication and fast reaction will be the most important.

I find it so non entertaining when various western tank fans fight with each other as to which is 'better'. Most western tanks use same standard ammunition(120mm NATO), chobham composite armour, weigh 55-60tons, have decent electronic and fire control packages. So what if some tank goes 3 km/h faster, shoots 100 m further or is more accurate by 0.0001%. All western MBTs are designed for the same doctrine and hence similar levels of performance, so stop wasting your time comparing them.

I prefer to judge weapon capability by comparing it against its international contemporaries and crew capability by comparing their level of training against their opponent. Training is expensive, especially tank gunnery. Rich countries can afford to spend a lot more.

the secret of success???? what success against stones throwers in Gaza and South Bank, or in south Lebanon where it was the weakest weapon in the battle field, and instead of using it as a main battle tank, it's used as an ambulance to carry back the dead and wounded solders, I didn't talk yet about failing against hand held anti armored weapons.

I know its a little late to tell you but the Russian tanks are a lot harder to hit and have much better protection then the ones the NATO/whoever had managed to destroy in any war. The T-72 clones (Asad Babil) that blew up in Iraq had no more then 300mm of RHA, no ERA, rounds obsolete since '73 that can't kill anything. Not hard to kill at all by modern tank. Its really hard to hit a well-driven T-80/90 unless you fire ATGM. T-80/90 has APS (Shtora-1, Arena, auto-smoke grenades) since mid-80s

I've not the idea about the speed of Merkava 4...
In Italy we have got the "Centauro". It's on wheels, it is speed and has a big cannon.
Anyway... Italy is a desperate land...

Best is a push, but I would not deny that it is a very impressive one. I would put this one at number 2 right behind the abrams, I still think it is better than the ch2 or leo2.

You are really making a strech comparrison here. The CH2 is as much like the centurion as this is. That is to say, they are both tanks, but that's about as far as it goes.

No really, the Isrealies took their centurions, turned thema round and moved the engine bay to the front and called it the MErkava 1. If you dont belive me serch for any of the discovery channels/military channels top 10 tnaks and listien to Dr Nuasbacher from Sandhurst talking about it.

This is the MK4, the interior layout is different from the centurion, the engine, the gun, the target system (which original centurions lacked entirely), everything, is all different. But yeah, I guess its a centurion.

Its not an entirley bad thing, i mean the centurion was a great tank, but it was develpoed in 1945. I mean its your opinion that the merkava should be No.2. I just disagree that its better then the challanger 2 or the leopard.

The CH2 has no numbers (neither does the merkava really, but it has significantly more than the CH2), and the leo2 has lots of issues. For one, the leo2 has a poor repair record with the nations that have it, it hasn't seen combat (meaning that operators of it are rookies), and it doesn't have that many either. Total it has 3600, but those are all spread thin among many nations.

Numbers arent evreything, especially in the right enviroment. 2 Isrealli Centurions that became damaged manged to destroy 60 syrian tanks ont he golan heights over 30+hours in the yom kippur war. Of course the more tanks you have the bigger the advantage. In the cold war, if russia had gone to war with hato they belived for evrey 1 tank we lost they woudl lose 20-30, they had the numbers but we had better tanks, cheiftan for example.

Evidence from WWII proves otherwise. The Sherman had something like a 1:10 kill:killed ratio with the tiger, but there was a 15:1 production ratio. Numbers may not be everything, but they are very near to it. Numbers are the most significant single part of any tank, especially when stats are as close as they are with many modern tanks.

That is ture, hwoever how you use the tanks plays a big part in how effective they are. But most of the best MBT's today, maybe even the top 6 or 7 are all from NATO allied countrys, so there's never really going to be a time when they go head to head with each other. Now that Jordan have the CHallanger 1's, if they ever go to war with isrela again then we may get an insight as to which is superior

If Jordan goes to war with Israel, they will use the RPG-32 that penetrated a meter of chobham-style multi-layer armor in testings. It was designed to even get through active protection systems such as Iron Fist, Trophy, Arena, Drozd1/2. Not trying to bag any tank, but anti-tank rounds are VERY powerful today.
As for what tank is the best? I honestly doubt that T-90 or late versions of T-80 are in any way inferior to ANY NATO tank. With missiles and over 4km shot range its a VERY strong foe

If in 1985 there was a US vs USSR war, USA would lose. At that time, US APFSDS were neutralised by ERA Kotankt 5, Flankers and Fulcrums outclassed F-15s and F-16s kinematically and in avionics, soviet SA-10 were more then capable of taking out B-1 and even B-2 thanks to low-freq radars that brought the missile close enough for SAM to see it. T-80 and T-72 were armed with ATGMs. Finally against the US navy, they use Backfire-Cs, Bears and Blackjacks with Supersonic anti-ship missiles

you say fulcrums are better than f-16 but when germany took postion of fulcrum squodren they flown them against there f16.The F16 proofed better in dogfights because of smaller turn radious.f15 & f16 are both old aircraft now, however there replacments will outclass everything anyone has including the eurofighter.Blackjacks couldnt get close enough to fire Backfire-Cs because of F14 & phoniex missle plus there are various counter measures for anti-ship missles

F-16 lost 49 dogfights out of 50 to MiG-29. Backfire-C is a bomber. Soviet missiles are supersonic which Phalanz couldnt guide and when come within 3 km from target they fly erratic patterns that cant be locked onto.

total bollocks if i ever heard it ! soviet = rustbucket for a start. next its about the generals not the men or the equipment. finally both sides were fully geared for total spectrum combat operations in multiple simultaneous major theatre wars. The only result between U.S and C.C.C.P would be annihilation - FOR BOTH !

I agree and it makes sense. Conventional wars will be consigned to the dusts of time. Nuclear will be a distant memory as nobody in their 'right' minds would resort to any war. The machines themselves, both sides are astounding feats and technological marvels, love to give one a test drive, wouldn't you ?

i disagree, i live in israel and i see many Merkava tanks, they are great - the best, in israel. they are designed to israeli needs - israeli terrain, israeli tactics and israeli enemies. but outside of israel (and its surrounding countries) or no in the hands of the IDF (israeli defense forces) -it can be a real drawback. for example - they are made as defensive tanks (heavy, armored, firepower). they were build to rocky terrain. the american and german tanks were build as "multipurpose tanks".

I just lol at all those who put down the Merkava and praise Hezbollah... the closest thing Hezbollah got to a tank is a Toyota pickup truck with garbage plates as armor... additional reactive armor would include babies, and wondering civilians.

@Dubaifreak no we wont, we simply will not have an Airforce, and some other stuff... which is a huge disatvantage i agree... but this Tank is from Israeli money, Israeli funding and Israeli engineering. the entire Idea of this tank is also as a weapon we can supply ourselves in a wartime scenario, and Hezbollah would be sticks and stones without Irans support. we can at least be a formidable guerilla without the US, Hezbollah would be less than trash without Iran.
