@GiantEnemyCrabgot WInd & Wuthering was released in December 27, 1976 in US. I always refer to it as a work in 1977 because including Trick Of The Tail & WInd & Wuthering as 1976 releases is kind of misleading although technically correct. I prefer to refer to WInd & Wuthering as a 1977 release because that's pretty much how it's regarded and I will continue to do so.
Damn. I used to have a songbook of "Trick" back in the Seventies but it was misplaced. Guess i'll have to learn it again the old fashioned way like we did with Ripples...and all these great tunes. By ear. Saw them in Oakland in 2007 and they were fuckin' on it!
Oh to see they actually DID this, once upon a time! Coming up in the '80s, who woulda thought that they turned their backs on such a rich legacy as One For the Vine. With Rutherford on bass, where he belongs, as it was what he was best at.
This is the first song I ever heard from Genesis, I knew instantly Genesis would be my new favorite band. In fact, I think it was my first proper favorite band, and it still is.
Storytime music, alights your burdened soul upon the most beautiful of perches and burns brilliant within. How many nights did I spend laying beneath the oak and maple trees of my teenage years in Ontario, the earphones of my walkman pressed tightly to my ears so that I would not miss even the quietest touches? The pot was not as good back then, but the music more than made up for it. I rejoice knowing that this music is flying through the universe now forever, one day maybe for me to hear again
@ns9144, seconds out tour is a defining moment in mine and a host of other people's lives. I agree, genesis is OUR soundtrack, right from Silent Sun I was hooked.
Tommy I enjoy so much this access to the music i listen when younger...I will invite my facebook friend to visit you...Genesis has been so long in my life....so long my life
@dtrueland Especially from the 1977 Tour. That ending on "Second's Out" with Chester going around the Kit and Tony's Hammond Organ still sends vibrations of joy thru my being!
Truly the greatest and most Epic band to ever come along.
The music of Genesis IS the soundtrack to all our lives.
ONLY Supper's Ready has a more EPIC ending - absolutely jaw-dropping, mind-blowing brilliance that will NEVER be touched!!! GENESIS will always and forever RULE THE UNIVERSE!!!
@ThroughRock If you don't get 'the boring parts' of Supper's Ready I hope your nick has nothing to do with the band. You can't seriously put those two pieces in the same ball park... This is good,. Most of the stuff with Peter brilliant. No comparison.
@PrZemek44 Supper's Ready has great parts but the bit connecting Lover's Leap and The Garunteed Eternal Sanctuary Man goes on too long, How Dare I Be So Beautiful is dull and the Apocolypse 9/8 solo isn't too interesting. The best parts of the song IMO are Lover's Leap, The Band of Merry Men (fantastic) and Willow Farm. Eggs is Eggs is pretty good.
But One for the Vine is consistently fun and powerful. I'm sick of people putting Supper's Ready before everything just because it's longest.
@pleatedskirt18 Musical Box and Supper's Ready have great endings but if you want a real epic ending then you've gotta go with LOS ENDOS any day!!! (Even the name says it all.)
I so wish that they did this during their farewell tour. Still, it is nice that the memories are forever stored here. Thanks for posting this, Tommygun!
I was at that 1980 concert. I kept yelling "Supper's Ready" and then Phil said "Sorry, we love that song, but aren't allowed to play it." Still so happy to see my favorite band live in New Orleans. Time I saw them before that was Then Three tour at a stadium here only one-third filled, which was awesome to have so personal of a Genesis concert. To boot, I was with my beautiful young blonde new girlfriend who was so sweet and sexy, & we were kissing & tripping on orange sunshine. I was in Heaven!
GREGG ROLIE SEPERATING FROM SANTANA TO BEGIN JOURNEY, DARRELL STUERMER FINISHING HIS WORK WITH JEAN-LUC-PONTY TO START A CAREER WITH GENESIS, FRANK ZAPPA AUDITIONING DRUMMERS TO REPLACE CHESTER THOMPSON, AND THEN PETER STANDING STILL, TAKING A DEEP BREATH WONDERING "WHAT NOW"...
I was 13, I couldn't know songs from Genesis was good or bad. I just remembered those songs made me feel how magic life could it be. And it has been. Thanks Genesis for your job. Songs to feed our soul.
I have been a fan since the 70's and although I feel that the band lost it's soul when PG left, this song has always been the best since. Hackett is such a master, and Banks a genius.

Genesis from my 14 ...to my 51 now, Genesis in these days.... Genesis.... proved to have left the legacy...of absolute genuine character... The feeling of their songs...the neverending discovery... create , time and time again .... the feeling of a just-discovered unfound waterfall of musical mastership...blended with life-real lyrics .... ending up with one of the purest feelings of simple sincerety and joy! For fine-tasters to enjoy! Bernard Belgium
Oh I just could listen to the boys forever.....I have seen them 22 times and I have not seen nearly enough. I first saw them when I was 9. Thank you John my big brother for turning me on to one of the greatest collaborations to ever grace this green earth.
I wouldn't wanna pull a No True Scotsman here, but somebody by the name of "irondaddymac" just doesn't strike me as the biggest Genesis fan on here... ;-)
I favour the stuff with Gabriel but 'Wind & Wuthering' has a few of my favorite Genesis songs ever. The only song I don't like is the slow dance one that was overplayed and the beginnings of Phil's romance songs. Afterglow I think it was called.
@TheExeter "Afterglow" was a great ending song on one of the best albums I've ever listened to. The way they went from the heavy keyboard and instrumental and slowed it down and went right into "Afterglow" was the essence of perfection for me. As a youth that song and nearly all the songs on this album had such spiritual connotations for me. I may not have understood it all, but "Your Own Special Way" always made me think of my perception of who God was.
@Quantanthead Wow. You really nailed it on the head. I listened to "Afterglow' after reading this and I had a flashback of my youth and it really meant alot to me back then too. It reminded me of a girl. So cool how music is like a time machine sometimes.
The story is actually very reminiscent of "The Man Who Would Be King" with Sean Connery and Michael Caine. I've always thought that Tony Banks wrote superb lyrics to this song.
well... it doesn't suck... you just have to wait 6 minutes until the good part starts... lots of old genesis tunes are like porn movies - you have to fast forward through the bullshit to get to the money shots!
FUCK YOU!!! Any "TRUE" Genesis fan will appreciate the music as a whole, instead of degrading it to the point of comparing it to a porno. Lemme guess... your favorite Genesis song is "I Can't Dance"? If you can't grasp the concept of the early stuff, you don't deserve the right to call yourself a fan. FUCK YOU, again!!!
whatever moron. take a valium. I've got all the Genesis records up to Abacab, and then they started to really suck. My fav is still Selling England by the Pound.. you wanker. Most great Genesis songs are long, like Cinema Show or Supper's ready, but those songs weren't boring. I just think this song is boring except for the middle bit. I think Wind and Wuthering is one of their most boring records period. The songs seemed to be long for no good reason. Just my opinion so chill ape.
i don't know if it's WAY superior but then again you're comparing an official release to a bootleg, unreleased concert. The disparity between the 2 can be big but in this case this is still a fantastic concert w/good audio that was never released.
The "Duke" tour. Obliviously Peter would not be on this track as this was late '76. Why did Tommygun1028 mention Peter? Steve hadn't even toured with "Genesis" since '77.
I see no lack of quality in the Collins era what that era may mean. He was with the band from the early 70's. Sure members have left and that will change the dynamics in any endeavor. As for which era is better - well that depends who you are. I myself appreciate the effort every line-up of Genesis - yes even Calling All Stations. I'd rather they had done a few more albums with Ray Wilson then just do nothing and put out repackaged old stuff in the form of greatest hits and box sets.
I agree totally with you, as a matter of fact it s absolutely rigth to say that Phil was with the band from the early 70's ,and a great complement , & more than that , the support that no one could have been but him , why some "fans" live around that criticism nearly hating Phil ?... Genesis must unite our hearts, use our energy to love Genesis , as well known , Phil gave all his energy and talent and left his personal life , leading Genesis to succes ...
@Triplecenturies Not me! 1 Ray Wilson, or rather 1 Collins-less CD was more than enough. In fact, it was too much. I've given that CD more listens than it deserved and walked away every time unmoved, undriven, and definitely dissatisfied, something I'd never said about any previous Genesis CD, at least to this extent. Collins is categorized too much by his latter wedding rehearsal type material, and not credited enough for his early years at the helm, some of my favorite Genesis years.
Some of us can tolerate the "river of constant change" better than others. Most of us know that you almost always don't hit a home run you're first time at bat. One album creates a "point" the next one would have created two points, thus a better idea as to which direction the group was going. I wasn't expecting Gabriel out of Collins, thus I wouldn't expect Collins out of Wilson. It would have been nice to see where more time together would have taken Banks, Rutherford, & Wilson.

This sounds very similar to the Three Sides Live version.

This is from the Lyceum theater in London in 1980

I was refering to the live album Genesis put out two years later.

The audio on 3 sides live is way superior though...
irondaddymac 2 years ago
i don't know if it's WAY superior but then again you're comparing an official release to a bootleg, unreleased concert. The disparity between the 2 can be big but in this case this is still a fantastic concert w/good audio that was never released.

@LowellDevil It is the version.
