  • This reminds me of the Shel Silverstein poem: Pamela Purse.

And when we got grabbed by that wild savage band,

Who tied us together and made us all stand

In a long line in front of the King of the land-

A cannibal known as Fry-'Em-Up Dan,

Who sat on his throne in a bib so grand

With a lick of his lips and a fork in his hand,

As he tried to decide who'd be first in the pan-

From back of the line, in that shrill voice of hers,

    Pamela Purse yelled, "Ladies first."

  • Was fun chatting about this animation with am lovely stranger on the subway this morning.

  • Great stuff! I wish I'd been born at the beginning of the 70s instead of the end!

  • sounds like carol channing

  • It amazes me that people watch this and think that is how a lady should act. These people are certainly in the minority, but... wow really?

  • I was 8 when this was shown in school, and I vaguely remember with hilarity that during the segment when Harry Belafonte sings, everyone (including myself) started screaming, "O.J. SIMPSON!!!" It was glorious pandemonium.

That aside, I love with movie, and I JUST downloaded the album on iTunes. Thank you for uploading!

  • HELP my character is the Little Lady and i dont want to get eaten :(

  • i still have this album! lol

  • Those tigers are hippies.

  • The tigers look like refugees from the Yellow Submarine.

  • lol...I AM A TENDER SWEET YOUNG THING...LOL

  • A little girl simply acts naturally and somehow she deserves to be boiled in water and eaten by tigers? Is that what I'm suppose to get from this? One question...was this made by Hitler?

  • @TheCrossling a little girl is selfish, inconsiderate and oblivious to her surroundings because her head is too far up her own perfectly groomed butt. she is eaten by tigers because she couldn't stop obsessing over her appearance long enough to get a clue.

  • It just goes to show you when your actions are rude, mean, self centered, bossy, and the fact that you only care about good looks, there will be consequences. BTW, how did the Girl's ribbon droop all by itself at at about 3:10?

  • That's good for her azz!

  • 1:15 It's a trap!

  • This past summer I went to Europe for the first time with a "real lady"...

It started from the first moment, (when she broke her bag, 'cause she had packed too many dresses that got "mussed"), and went on from there...

For example, my "reward", (for fixing her bag), was that I got to carry it for the rest of the trip...

It basically went downhill from there...

Man, what I'd do for just one stray tiger...

    J

  • I also think that the moral of this story is: if you buy into gender roles and stereotypes as a means of getting ahead in life, don't be at all surprised when you get treated like a piece of meat.

  • i hate it

  • I loved Shel Silverstein's work as a kid. Still do.

  • I get it, if you follow gender roles, you deserve to be eaten by tigers. And by the way, the other explorers didn't get away. They just had to watch the girl be boiled alive and eaten.

  • I remember this when I was 9 yrs old. I still run into women at work who are "ladies first" fit for a tigers stew!

  • At :35 the sign says: Creamed Tuna as she skips to the front of the line. Subliminal?

  • I never quite understood why the tigers have numbers on them? LOL

  • @jessied81 I KNow! straight outta "Yellow Submarine" I guess...

  • @handymandan100 OMG, I just looked that up, I think you're right! Ha! That's been bugging me since I was like 4! Now I gotta figure out why the numbers in Yellow Submarine. Lol.

  • @handymandan100 Lol I was just watching that then i saw the blue meanies and came here to comment it and saw that you beat me to it.

  • @saminnyc Bahahaha, "Ooooh, far out!"

  • you all just don't get it!!! this is when shows had a meaning.... use your imagination...

  • I remember this whole album. One of the first I owned. Thank u for the memories.

  • where's lambchop???

  • I always think of this when my girly sisters even into adulthood left me do the dirty or emotionally difficult jobs because they were tender sweet young things and far, far too delicate--when it suited them. Alas, they were never eaten by tigers. I was. Life does not necessarily imitate art. But I have to say these stories and songs really stick in the mind! Like a lot of posters, I searched for this because of the Target commercial.

  • @bitchassjosh

...you completely miss the point, It isn't about acting like a Lady, it's about not being snobby, stuck up, and vain. This showcases Vanity and self centerdness masquerading as being "a lady".

  • @hmozachsown i thought it was about taking advantage of males with your womanhood status.. demanding special treatment is wrong.

  • @bitchassjosh Have you always had such severe comprehension problems?

  • I remember watching this every begining school year back in the early 1970's at Harrison School in Livingston New Jersey...I just purchased the 16mm movie on e bay ! ..We all loved this..

  • I watched "Free to be...You and Me" when I was a kid and this is all I could remember of it, but I found an even better video clip than this...

  • haha i was her for my skool play in like 3/4th grade!! i sounded just like her to!! lol :) glad i could find this

  • "Oh, far out!"

  • @saminnyc LOL...you can tell this was made in the 70's

I remeber watching this when I was in grade school (in the 1980's). Any time we had a "special" day at school when we would get to watch a movie - usually the last day before Christmas or spring break when we had an early dismissal - they would always show us this movie.

  • When i was in school the last year Dehart elementry was open in st.louis mo we put this on as a podution the 4th and 5 th graders were the ones that had the spotlight and the rest was the choir we had a blast
