@MasterOfYourPuppets Da würd ich mir aber selbst in Arsch beißen, the Dubliners sind einfach kult und Paddy Reilly ist mein Lieblingssänger gewesen , was würd ich für dieses Plektrum geben ;) schade.... I hope he'll join the Dubliners for the 50th anniversary :) I already booked tickets :)
can anyone please tell me who is the singer here? i see him with the dubliners for the first time. reminds me a bit of someone i saw in another group?
The problem with much American folk music-even during the "golden age" of the 50's and 60's is that they did not have the richness of the musicianship--too simple-they needed to add a banjo, or accordion, or fiddle as you find in Irish music or all of the foregoing.

Well, the Jews are descended from a tribe of the Arabs/ North Africans. Which was why the Nazis made the distinction between Aryans and Jews. Judiasim is the correct term for the religion as Jew indicates both the tribe of the original Jews, and the religion. But both the tribe/race and the religion are nearly, very nearly synonymous. Just to throw that out there, that in a very obsure way, Jew is a race, though not as much of a distinction now though. Great song, great band. Great
good tune, but last verse needs updated and changed to show the truth behind the irish men that died in wars during 1st and 2nd world wars, why should they names be tarnished becuase of a hatredt for britan when they served they country so well, RIP ALL IRISH MEN THAT DIED DURING ANY CONFLICT HOME OR FORGIEND, MY UR NAMES LIVE IN THE STARS THO UR OWN DONT REMEMBER, LEST WE FORGET
@bigsinger1981 Very well put mate, they thought they were serving they're country for home rule, as brave as any flying column member, may they rest in peace.
Irish folk music can't be beaten! What a musical heritage they have. A great song and such stirring patriotism. I don't have an Irish background but I still love the music.
@donnyab I will! I mean, the Dubliners are not, I think, this old band of retired people who should better drink their beers and read their books, and James Joyce etc.
Although this version isnt nearly as upbeat as the rendition by the young dubs, this one sends a chill down my spine. Really draws an image of the time it was written in.
i love you paddy reily and you are indeed a great singer! but there are some songs that i'm so used to listen from luke or ronnie and this is one of them :(
I'm an American. The reason I love the Dubliners is because American folk music is not nearly as good as Irish folk music. After the rebellious years of rock n' roll, what do older Americans have to enjoy? Also, the themes of Irish folk music are universal. You don't have to be Irish or want to be Irish to connect strongly to them.
thats where some of american folk music came from. Irish folk music is great stuff. my family is irish , mother side and most of fathers. mothers side named Adams.
@Shewib I don't see them as being different at all. American folk music has been heavily influenced by the Irish going back to the days before Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger to the Irish immigrants of the mid-19th Century. Both exhibit the same universal themes of working class struggle and solidarity for the oppressed. The crossover was most evident during the 60's folk revival when you had Bobby Dylan singing Irish melodies. I think that's why Americans have strong connection with Irish music
@Shewib Excuse me, brother. American folk music does not exist. The only true American folk muisc is the one of the Native Americans, and they are the only Americans in the whole wide world. After you idiots, killed them all, people came on there land from all over the planet. So, you can tell what you want, but you are not an American, you all came from Europe, Asia, Africa.... So, what do we learn? Native American music is the only folk music you guys in America can call US Folk
@mihajlo96 dude, listen to man of constant sorrow and many artists from bluegrass and delta blues and tell me thats not folk music??? how many generations does it take for a people to make a form of music all their own? plus, a whole chunk of american folk music root's can be directly tied to irish traditional music? so... is there is there truly no american folk music?
@zarthered I didn't say that, i say that all you "Americans" are just Europeans, Asians, Africans and others... So the "american folk music" is a mix of all these
@mihajlo96 I think that assumes an overly essential nature to any given folk style, when folk music is by definition born of an organic shared experience. While there may be no one essential "American" folk tradition, there are those which are unique to the country and the land, be they born of an ethnic group- Irish-American, German American, etc.- or of a particular American region, like Delta Blues or Appalachian Bluegrass. Folk is not the music of nation-states, but of peoples.
@mihajlo96 You're showing a lot of ignorance here. A lot of American folk songs come from three and four hundred years ago, so they are in fact older than many Irish folk songs. "America" was named after an Italian. The people native to this land never originally referred to it as America and it is offensive in my opinion to lump so many different groups of natives under a single European name. American folk music exists and is a new creation that first developed here from a mixture of peoples.
@Shewib I would submit that the older American folk music was as strong as the Irish, as it had strong themes of equality that were founded upon the early struggles of the southern labor unions, specifically the Virgina cole mines. infect, those same folk songs, like "man of constant sorrow" and others were the direct ancestors of their Irish counterparts as it was the Irish who where the miners, railroad workers, and common laborers that America should celebrate. Long Live the Irish American.
Very well said about the themes of Irish music; well recognised many years ago by that poet who said "All their wars were merry but all their songs were sad". The themes of many of our folk songs are the ones of striving for freedom, and universal indeed. Also, there is a massive amount of great American music that I listen to: for example Arlo Guthrie, brilliant.
I love listening to all music and American music is great too.
dude it's because we want a strong rich heritage, we have a history of war and hate, and i hate that, i just wanna drink and have fun, and in America when ya drink ya fight
im american and for some reason all Irish music sounds great to me, and ppl always wonder why i listen to it and i always say to them IRISH PRIDE, and whip out my Celtic Cross pendant

I wouldn't say that but while we are critiquing... the use of the word "mate" might suggest true origin.
You see Ireland is larger than you think. simply casting back one's ancestry 4 fold is not only presumptuous but it is also hypocritical.
Had those deserters as you'd no doubt claim them stuck around perhaps you would not "be".
All the while us so called Amerikans were leaving we were sending money back to Ireland.
I would suggest you re-asses your viewpoint.
