@tantalides far from it. I understand how someone can oppose actions that govt. takes and still have love for the nation. However, there are those who don't have any love for their nation and just won't admit it. That's were all of the questioning of patriotism comes into play. It's like the old joke about when a room full of people tells a guy that he's drunk, he likely is drunk.

As for Maher, I've never seen him in a room where everyone was questioning his patriotism. He has many people on his show with a wide variety of views and he gets along with most of them just fine. This sort of accusation made by many, many people is a rare thing and is usually done for good cause. If someone is constantly having their patriotism questioned, that person likely doesn't have any and just won't admit it.

To have your patriotism questioned under the Nazi regime means you're a true patriotic German. Maher was being a patriot when his patriotism was questioned under a president who lied to go to war & passed unconstitutional laws.

That is why I think if many, many people question a person's patriotism, it's likely for good cause. Maher and those like him I believe have a disdain for patriotism, and it makes them nervous to see someone wearing a flag pin or waving a flag. If someone calls them on it, well, they go ballistic. For the record, patriotism can be good or bad depending on the nation involved.

If a nation honors personal freedom, liberty, etc., then it ought to be supported and, yes, loved for it. There's nothing wrong in being extreme in that. If a nation (or govt.) tramples liberty, goodness, etc., then not only is it wrong being extremely patriotic, it's wrong to be patriotic on any level until fundamental change has come to that land.

@maluse227 If one lives in a country that supports and honors liberty, justice, etc. then it isn't wrong to support said country and to be patriotic. If people aren't patriotic and live in a country like the one I mentioned, then they won't enjoy the blessings of liberty, justice, etc. for very long. The reason is simple. Unpatriotic people won't participate in civic duty and won't defend the nation in wartime. When that happens, it's a recipe for eventual national collapse.

However, we don't live in that ideal situation. We live in the era of the nation state. Some nations do not honor liberty, and some do. Those that do ought to be supported if for no other reason than to keep good ideals alive. To not do so is to invite a collapse of these nations.

The only mistake Obama has made is not making good on his promises(gay marriage, withdrawing ALL combat troops from Iraq and Afghanistan). Then again, this countries well being(universal healthcare) should come first. I say he should at least legalize gay marriage for the entire country before the 2012 elections. That one thing is guaranteed millions of votes for him.
