@andyj80 no actually genres are based on sound, lyrical content, or marketing. Punk can't change the meaning of genre. It might be a song that appeals to punk culture but it can't be a punk song based on that. John Lydon of the Sex Pistols claims The Sex Pistols aren't punk, but lyrically and sound wise they are.

I found a slate article stating the Clash wasn't really punk as well, I'm not talking about the band however just this one particular song.

@GetThisThingCrunk You're right. The Clash didn't feel the need to limit themselves to any particular genre. They communicated a clear attitude in the vast majority of their work, but stylistically they were all over the place. Listening to Sandinista or Combat Rock would easily prove that to anyone. They're one of my favorite groups of all time and I'd argue that starting with London Calling they'd be better classified as new wave/post punk.
