As much as I love and cherish the memories that Sesame Street gave me as a child, for us to say that Elmo has corrupted the show is downright selfish. Elmo is incredibly popular with today's kids, and is geared to appeal to THEM, not us (while containing some excellent parody, Sesame Street ultimately a children's program). If kids like and learn from Elmo, that's the most important thing. I DO miss Monsterpiece Theater and all the old late 80's/early 90's content, though.
God, how I loved Sesame Street as a kid, even though I never understood any of the references that Monsterpiece Theater made.
Now, though, I can't help but think that "Four Flew Over the Pigsty and Landed in the Mud" would work great as a comically super-depressing parody of the ending of the actual movie. :P
Awww... i always loved cookie monster.... Me want cookies!!! This was soooo hilarious!!! Memories... ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So much less traumatizing than watching the actual movie... Undoing the damage of Nurse Ratchet ...hehehe
Do enjoy....... Weeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 1 flew...Who knew?
I use to love this particular opening of monsterpiece theater. With all the characters that had been used in other pieces shown in classic pictures. It was funny but cool at the same time because it had that sense of importance from a show you would see in an adult show version, only geared toward us kids. Very creative. Grover was awesome. Though I like Elmo I must admitt, Grover in his heyday, would give Elmo a run for his money. Not to mention Burt and cookie! Cookie eating, lol!
Old Sesame Street was really funny, no wonder it stuck so far into my brain.
Kids need IMO the humor, and good lessons of old SS - not the watered down crap where half of it is Elmo - though obviously while keeping modern-ish [but this kind of stuff, how do you do, or not do, that?]
Ever notice in the final refrain of the opening instrumental that Alastair munches in pitch and rhythm with the music? Clearly he's a critic of good taste.
When I was a kid, the beginning used to make me laugh when CM was throwing down on those darn cookies. And you know what I found out today? It still does. I am glad it stopped when it did. My breathing was beginning to be affected by my laughter.
I can name all the books seen in the intro! They are (In order): Monsterpiece Theatre, Hamlet, Much Ado About Nothing, The Monsters of Venice, The Taming of the Shoe, Chariots of Fur, Me, Claudius, The Sun Also Rises, Waiting for Elmo, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The King and I, Guys and Dolls, Gone with the Wind, The Old Man and the C, The Postman Always Rings Twice, and The 39 Stairs I believe that's all of them. Comment me back if I am right. :)
@AviloriANo1 What you mean you don't like CGI Bert and Ernie. CGI is so much more awesome then actual puppets. Wait what this isn't opposite day? Oh *backs away slowly*. Lol
Seriously I agree old school Sesame Street is the best. My heart broke when I saw Bert and Ernie CGI. Also every time I see Elmo's World my childhood dies a little.
I always loved and appreciated the opening sequence. buying all the props and taking the time to set them all up for the camera to capture is impressive. the time and effort the ss staff put in to create it is something that we have not seen on ss for years.
There you have it! 1 flew over coocoo's nest. Finally. Very beautiful- very moving- very silly. Join me next week for: Rocky 20. Story of- twenty rocks. Very heavy stuff.
For some reason I thought there was a "Five Swam Under The Duck Pond" in here somewhere. I remember a low-tech underwater effect and everything. Must be a false memory.
I cannot believe how many sesame street segments I remember! (considering how little I was) Now that I've seen one flew over the cuckoo's nest this is pretty weird! XD
I remember qouteing this endlessly to my older sister and my parents to make them laugh when i was young. I think the year this aired was about when I stopped watching.
Believe it or not, this Sesame Street sketch got me hooked on the real, Masterpiece Theater, and later I got into reading these classic pieces of literature because I wanted to see how they were to the shows. Thanks Sesame Street.

keepvid website will let you download youtube videos as .flv files, AoA audio extractor will let you rip the audio from them in mp3/wav form. (search for both on google) Then you'll just need an audio editor to separate the intro music from the rest. Of course you'll still have cookie monster munching in the background during the intro.
The Masterpiece (and Monsterpiece as well) theme comes from "Symphonies and Fanfares for the King's Supper". A little web searching should find you a recording. There are many.
