Canada only has a population of 32 million, while the USA is near 300 million. It cost a lot more money to cover everyone down here, especially when %65 of Americans are over weight which leads to health problems and the #1 cause of death; heart disease. In the US it is 16%.

as for a debate, talking over people wont get it done. But its important to understand what chris matthews main point it. If you want health care for all, you dont find reasons not to do it, you find ways TO DO IT.
Look at medicare, now that it is common and everyone likes it, even the republicans look at it like "how do we save medicare" not how do we cut it.
So for health care insurance, same thing has to apply, get it done, so we all look at it like "how do we keep it, not how do we cut it"

Statistics simply don't support the claim of the US having the best healthcare for its population. Only anecdotes about rich people support this.
Anyway, tort reform exists in Texas and it has done nothing to lower costs. On the other hand, it is virtually impossible for someone with a legitimate claim to get any compensation.

Its not socialism either because we're not eliminating private insurance companies, we are simply forcing them to compete and set their prices to reasonable levels. Every single American (covered or not) pays 6% more than Canadians for a system that doesn't cover everyone

I wonder if the WH has contacted Matthews about stepping into Robert Gibbs sweaty shoes to take over the podium when he finally bombs for good. Chris would be a wonderful substitute for Gibbs who can't substantiate a lie whereas Matthews has a gift for crawling on the floor and giving the Obama WH his all. I don't think that the republicans are any better about spending money. Both the conservatives and the liberals created this mess over decades, just to keep their bases happy so they could get re-elected. There ain't no free lunch here. If you write a check to the government or to a health care co. is not the question. Something has to give in the system it's self - address that first.

Although I think that something has to be done about healthcare, I do not think that are having the right debate. Cost is the key. The question is why. The US has a healthcare system that is double the cost than any other country. Where does this money go? Why did the system get so out of control? We are subsidizing too many hands in the cookie jar. The people pay by having a greedy system.

The issue is the manner which the survey was framed. Imagine if they had said " Are you optimistic that the reform would" a. reduce costs, b. Increase quality, c. so on and so on. The results I guarantee would be the exact opposite. This is CLASSIC trick anyone with an education could spot.

Where has socialized medicine worked? NOWHERE. If the gov't would get their hands off of it, the price of insurance would drop to more manageable amounts....Let's see how much taxes the insurance companies and doctors pay. Basic economics dictates that taxes are passed on to the consumer.

Socialized medicine has worked in most countries implemented. In Europe its considered barbaric to not have access to healthcare. I know, I lived there. Also, the government plan would allow people to choose between government healthcare and private healthcare, so the market will decide in the end.

Defence spending is 500 billion a year, why can't we take 200 billion from defence and put into the health care reform. Everybody keeps avoiding this like we don't have money, but we have enough to pay 500 billion for defence spending. The money is their, it is just whether or not people will do the right thing. The dirty little secret in this health care debate is the extraordinary amount of money that is funneled to an enterprise we call "Defense." If the defense budget were reduced by even a small fraction, a public health care system would be far more attainable.
But unfortunately, the defense budget is sacrosanct. ("War is the health of the state," as the old saying goes.) Never mind that the Soviet Union is defunct; no, we must always increase our military to monumental proportions.

We're not denying health care to anyone. Health care is not a right.
Examples of rights are:
Freedom of speech
Freedom of religion
Freedom to keep and bear arms
Freedom to assemble etc
Rights are not paid for by others, they are something that you exercise, not something that you take from someone else. What gives you the right to take away my labor, my property, to buy yourself health care? You do have the right to buy health care, it's just that you don't have the right to make me pay for it

Our healthcare system is a system of embezzlement and waste.
We ranked second to last in waiting times. We spend far more of our GNP per capita on healthcare than other industries. We have the most privatized healthcare system in the industrialized world.
This isn't liberal charity. It's common sense. It's going to save money. Matthews is completely right in hardballing these morons, because they don't actually know or care to know the facts.

If I want better insurance, then that is what I will get. If I can't afford it, well then those are the breaks, life's not far, it never has been. Private insurance (choice, freedom) will be dead after the "government option" runs private insurance out of business: there can be no other outcome. And after that, they will choose for you because it will be "their" money.

My point was made below. It is only when the purchasing of health care returns to the consumer, that the balance will occur. When the people know what they are buying with their own money, then that is when there will be true competition. Until then, it will be a scam, whether private or government run.
Like I said, health care is not a right. I'm sick and tied of the government stealing my money and giving it to other people, they can take care of themselves, they are not my responsibility.

"true competition. " There already is "true competition." I worked in insurance claims. Let me give you a hint: If you get diagnosed with brain cancer tomorrow, your insurance company will not make an easy job of giving you $150,000+. Unless of course it's the best insurance possible, but then most people can't afford the premiums, and even in nations with superior health care systems such as Sweden and Japan, you can still buy it.
