Love my mosin paid 80 bucks and ammo 8 bucks for 20 rounds "surplus" love the sound when at the range and people stop and get quiet after shooting that first shot
@FuckGunControl0331 Not sure where you get cheaper ammo, but 20 rounds right now from any source is between $11 and $20 for 20 rounds. Unless you get bulk, which is moderately cheaper. $140 for 880 rounds of 148gr 70's/80's Russian surplus. 0.15 per round, you can't beat that versus 0.55 per round for the 20 round box.
@FuckGunControl0331 My bad, I found a source that's $6 for 20 rounds. The other commenter really didn't get 'hosed' on the deal given the small price difference.
@gymkhanadog There's plenty of good ammo out there for the Mosin that can be had for under $0.20/round. It adds up once you start talking about hundreds or thousands of rounds.
@FuckGunControl0331 Where do you order your ammo, out of personal curiosity? Always looking for new ammo sources that might include reloadable brass. Reloadable 7.62x54 tends to be spendy.
@gymkhanadog I don't have any one place that I order from and I don't use just one brand. But these 2 websites do pretty well to organize a lot of the ammo prices on the web. Try ammoengine and ammoseek. Just add the dot com.
ok guys iv been watching video on this rifles for weeks now,,should i buy one for my first rifle,,im 35 and iv shot alot of rifles but never owned one myself???
@brucekirk89 Try it before you buy it if you can. The Mosin's metal buttplate is going to leave some bruises on your shoulder if you shoot it often, but that should be no problem for a 35 year old man. Ammo is cheap, and they're a blast to shoot. They're reliable, historically COOL, and an excellent deer rifle. Go for it!
@brucekirk89 Can't go wrong with the Mosin Nagant. Very cheap to own and very cheap to shoot. I just recently bought a relatively expensive one at Cabela's for $149. (Two weeks earlier, they were selling them on sale for $99). But they started selling out, so I thought to get one while they were to be had. AIM surplus will have them for about $80.
I have a unaltered rifle. Somehow it didn't get brought up to the 91/30 standard. It is stamped 1905. The question I have, for anyone is. The front barrel band is stripped. Will a barrel band from a 91/30 fit this rifle? Thanks.
@metalraider187 Thanks for the reply. It turns out they won't fit. The rifle I have is the dragoon. Totally different bands. I couldn't find any for under $40. so I just repaired it with a 4-40 bolt & nut.

@TexianPride i shoot with old surplus rounds. and i personaly love them. rarely you get any problems the no.1 problem you get with it is it being purity damn in-accuret. mine tends to hit a little high right.
Nice vid dude!! Good info. I have a question... I am refinishing my 91/30 and there is still some spots in the wood that the varnish will not come out of. What do you suggest I use to get the varnish spots out? Thanks!
Hey man, thanks for your service and thanks for these videos. I just bought a M19/30 and it just so happens to be my first rifle ever. Between your vids and a couple other sources I went into the gun shop with so much confidence that the dealer thought that I was a collector. He was floored when I told him I had never bought a gun before.
@chenutz I wouldn't purchase an american made one. I don't even like an american remanufactured ones, my cousin has one and it seems off... Stripper clips don't work with it thanks to the company that remanufactured it... There maybe good ones out there but I haven't shot one yet.
Simo Heyha used the Finnish m28 so he said himself but there are pictures of him with a m28/30 maybe his mind was a little rusty, and he used iron sights he preferred them because he dident want the glass of the scope shining in the sun to give away his position many of his kills were from well over 400 yards credited with 505 kills he is the highest scoring sniper that ever lived .
7.62x 54 r 147 gr bullet at 2880feet per second out of a 91/30
2650 feet per second out of the carbines 20in barrel. Military loading is actually a little hotter than M2 ball which is 150 grain at 2740 feet per second but capability reloading wise they are equals. both capable of pushing 150's at 3000 feet per second roughly and 180's at around 2700feet per second.

@poik12 I don't know if it is a good deal for New Zealand, but here in the US, they are around $100 USD per rifle at gun shows, and $70 USD over the computer from an online gun store....with bayonet and other accessories.
Actually it's quite funny as you said "the common joke" so it's a joke and they are meant to be funny and the Germans have a big history to support it!
Hey man, great vid. very helpful. I just recieved my 1932 tula, broke her all down and got all the cosmoline removed. your videos were very helpful. My bore looks brand new after using your procedure. Question though...I used hoppes 9 on all the metal surface, and it made the metal look a lil washed out and greyed. Did i ruin the finish? or is this just how it looks without cosmoline all over it? please respond when you get the chance.
@chopperkeith You can kill a deer with a .22 LR if you do it right =p of course a Mosin will kill a deer, shoot it in the head and it'll drop instantly, if you're talking behind the shoulder then it might run a tiny bit depending on where you hit.
i have a question about cleaning... I run a patch with windex through the barrel then one with oil. should i clean the entire dissasembled bolt or just the bolt face?
@vennieman1989 Make sure that the bore shines like a mirror and has no pits. The crown of the barrel shouldn't be overly damaged either. Also, be prepared to really clean the rifle up of cosmoline. Scrub out the chamber and oil the bolt rails. Finally, pay no less than $110 unless you can't find the rifle anywhere else, which they're everywhere. Surplus ammo is corrosive, so remember to thuroughly clean it.
I'm looking at getting a Mosin-Nagant and I was wondering what you thought about making a carbine out of it? I wouldn't want to shorten the barrel to less than 16" for legal reasons as well as maintaining as much velocity as possible for the accuracy. I love carbine-sized weapons far more than their full length brethren and would like to know if I'm just begging to get in over my head with this or if it is reasonably possible?
two weeks ago i got a mosin nagant m44 from my mothers father and took it out to shoot,it has a bit of recoil but it is a fine rifle for what you pay for!
You're talking about the Finnish Farmer by the name Simo Häyhä . That guy was awesome IMHO. The most amazing thing is that he used iron sights versus using optics of the day.
@Howie262 Sir, at least he's spreading knowledge and helping others. It must be an amazing gift to be able to judge others so well. What's it like knowing you're so much better than everyone else?
@Howie262 Sir, at least he's spreading knowledge and helping others. It must be an amazing gift to be able to judge others so well. What's it like knowing you're so much better than everyone else?
I have a mosin nagant m44 with a round reciever that i gave 65 $ for. it was a good buy but i'm wondering whats the top dollar for a m44 in great condition?
i have been following your videos for a wile and have noticed you have some of the most nice surplus rifles on youtube. im only 19 but on my way to becoming a gunsmith myself as a dream i have had since i was a child.
Great videos fist off...I was wondering where I could find cheap straps for the mosin online? However I dont have the the strap adapter things on my rifle. I just have the slots in the stock like on the M38 at the bottom?
Hey, your videos are awesome. I bought a 44 mosin nagant, I think from tula, it has the triangle with a little arrow in it. There were nicer stocks at the store but this one was the cheapest and had the best barrel. Anyways from your videos ill be able to strip and clean it, should I do anything or check anything else on it before the range? Im pretty sure I can check the firing pin, I dont know how to check to headspace though. Any comment is appreciated, thanks for the videos again
If anyone has ever created or even seen a stress crack in a Mosin receiver I would like to see it.
No expert here, but some people reason that there are more Hex Finns because there were simply more hex rifles in existence when the FInns started doing their conversions. Either way, I dont think the Finns would put a crap receiver on their brand new precision barrels.
Round or Hex? Really does not matter. In fact the round is less prone to stress cracks along a linear edge, which is what a Hex has. Hex was designed to make the proof marks easier to stamp and that is all. Has nothing to do with strength. If Hex was stronger, Mausers would have all been made Hex. Come to think of it, all battle rifles would have....
@HHH100 Hex recievers are just generally considered to be of a higher quality and not rushed into service like many of the rounds. Think about it like this: How many Finnish service rifles do you see that are built on round receivers? None...Because the Finns knew that hexs were the way to go. Now granted, it's hard to turn down a hex if you have 1000's of them laying around from all the dead russians you killed to take them.
@HHH100 pre ww2 nagants were made of a finer steel and where hexagonal in shape, 1943 and back were made of finer steels and had hex receivers, when the war came they cut the quality of the steel in half and did away with the hex's because the rounded receivers were cheaper and easier to produce, a round will break sooner than a hex becasue the steel isnt as good, ive never seen a nagant crack in the first place, hex's are finer rifles and sought after more
@HHH100 compare a 1943 round vs a 1938 hex side by side. and i DEFY you to tell me the quality of the hex isnt vastly superior.. the hex actually has brass apointments. is made of superior wood. the finish doesnt look like a retard armed with a paint brush and a can of varnish attacked it.. etc etc. the quality controll was better before the war then when they were against the wall stamping out 91/30s giving one a rifle and the guy behind him a few rounds.
I havent fired that many rifles but I have fired this one before and this gun is damn loud. I am pretty sure other rifles of the same caliber are not this loud.
That is my favorite gun ever. Not only is it beautiful, not only does it fire a great cartridge, not only is it very rugged and reliable, not only is it accurate, not only does it have a rich history, but it's dirt cheap, retailing around 150 bucks :D
I would argue that the Kalashnikov has been used in more revolutions and conflicts than the Mosin Nagant, although the nagant has been around much longer. The production numbers of about 37 million Mosin Nagants are completely crippled by the 100 million AK-47's and its variants. The entire continent of Africa has been changed due to Kalashnikov along with South East Asia
@cwbyfan223 not a question of numbers made, its number of revolutions/conflicts/wars they were used in. if you have 37 million Mosin Nagants used in 20 wars, and 100 million AK47s used in 10 wars, Mosin has seen more wars.
the finnish made was known as the Sako. It was equipped with a heavier barrel, and used extensively by the Finnish during the winter war between them and Russia. This was the #1 choice of Simo Hayha - the man with the highest number of sniper kills in modern history, topping the charts at hundreds. Another interesting fact - he used iron sights.
Also - that rifle has not been involved in the most wars and revoutions. Have you ever heard of the AK47? now THAT is the rifle of revolution.
u can buy mosin nagants 91/30 on Gun Broker.com for cheap likethe highest i saw was $200.00 it goes down to $80.00 and some are in very nice condition im getting one next week!

Man am I glad I found your videos!! I found a Nagant at the local gun store for 119 bucks. I've got the cash but I'm not sure of its worth. The gun is in absolutely great shape, and all I'll use it for is deer, bear, etc. Is this a good buy? Thanks a lot
You said that the 7.62x54R is similar to the .30-06. Is it more powerful or less than? There are plenty of ballistic charts describing the .30-06 but none on the 7.62x54R. It's a shame that you didn't mention the Remington and Westinghouse Mosin Nagants from the Great War. I know you were short on time, but that was a large part of the rifle's history. It even served as an infantry rifle for our troops during WW1.
@RandomPoolGuy84 Can't tell you exactly in terms of ft/lbs of energy, or velocity, but the .30-06 is 7.62x63, and the 7.62x54R is... 7.62x54(rimmed). This means that the .30-06 has around 9mms more cartridge capacity than the 7.62x54R.
@Iraqveteran8888 about the muzzle velocity. and when your little typed thing about "carlo hatchcock" his name was carlos hathcock and he was a GySgt in the USMC.
@Iraqveteran8888 I disliked the part about it being in more revoulutions/Wars then any other weapon in history because the AK-47 has just been in about as much wars/rebellions as the Mosin.
@KozMick1 name a war from 1891 up to today and the mosin will for the most part be found there in 1 form or another, cant say that about the ak47. AK47 was officially accepted by the Soviet military in 1949, the West didnt get their hands on 1 till mid 1950s, and it really didnt see alot of action till mid 1960s Vietnam. Theres alot of Mosin Nagants & Ak47s still in use in Afghanistan.
@LockINC ya i shot it for total of 50 times, give or take, its very loud though, and it has a strong kick, i dont shoot it anymore, its just hanging on my wall, i just shoot around with my ak now
Mine was an Arsenal build.

You're talking about the Finnish Farmer by the name Simo Häyhä . That guy was awesome IMHO. The most amazing thing is that he used iron sights versus using optics of the day.

hello sir i want to purchase this today. i have a quick question can this rifle shoot the m1a round? 7.62x51? or only the 54r
911junglist 1 year ago
@911junglist 7.62x51 is not rimmed - if I'm not mistaken. You won't be able to load/feed the rifle.
Mosin ammo is cheap and readily available. Why chance/risk things?

Hey, your videos are awesome. I bought a 44 mosin nagant, I think from tula, it has the triangle with a little arrow in it. There were nicer stocks at the store but this one was the cheapest and had the best barrel. Anyways from your videos ill be able to strip and clean it, should I do anything or check anything else on it before the range? Im pretty sure I can check the firing pin, I dont know how to check to headspace though. Any comment is appreciated, thanks for the videos again

Simo Häyhä & Finnish Mosin Nagant 540 kills in 102 days.
baldurus1 1 year ago
If anyone has ever created or even seen a stress crack in a Mosin receiver I would like to see it.
No expert here, but some people reason that there are more Hex Finns because there were simply more hex rifles in existence when the FInns started doing their conversions. Either way, I dont think the Finns would put a crap receiver on their brand new precision barrels.
PricklyPete10 1 year ago
That Finnish gun is a real beauty. My uncle is giving me one of those this weekend, I can't wait.

i got a mauser 98k that i use for bear hunting, idk if the mosin nagant could replace that rifle
chicagobears22 1 year ago
Very good review. I thank you for doing a general overview too (there are several variants and it gets confusing talking about them individually)
BXAssasinatorXS 1 year ago
Round or Hex? Really does not matter. In fact the round is less prone to stress cracks along a linear edge, which is what a Hex has. Hex was designed to make the proof marks easier to stamp and that is all. Has nothing to do with strength. If Hex was stronger, Mausers would have all been made Hex. Come to think of it, all battle rifles would have....
HHH100 1 year ago
@HHH100 Hex recievers are just generally considered to be of a higher quality and not rushed into service like many of the rounds. Think about it like this: How many Finnish service rifles do you see that are built on round receivers? None...Because the Finns knew that hexs were the way to go. Now granted, it's hard to turn down a hex if you have 1000's of them laying around from all the dead russians you killed to take them.
Iraqveteran8888 1 year ago 4
@HHH100 pre ww2 nagants were made of a finer steel and where hexagonal in shape, 1943 and back were made of finer steels and had hex receivers, when the war came they cut the quality of the steel in half and did away with the hex's because the rounded receivers were cheaper and easier to produce, a round will break sooner than a hex becasue the steel isnt as good, ive never seen a nagant crack in the first place, hex's are finer rifles and sought after more
scoutsgt18b 1 year ago
@scoutsgt18b I went to 3 stores when they were on sale , the hex receiver Mosins are the first ones they grab.

@HHH100 So i have a hex reciever does this mean that my gun is prone to the reciever having issues down the road or will it still be fine
148scalemodeling 1 year ago
@HHH100 ya you are right it really makes no difference in firepower
thekazzak100 10 months ago
@HHH100 compare a 1943 round vs a 1938 hex side by side. and i DEFY you to tell me the quality of the hex isnt vastly superior.. the hex actually has brass apointments. is made of superior wood. the finish doesnt look like a retard armed with a paint brush and a can of varnish attacked it.. etc etc. the quality controll was better before the war then when they were against the wall stamping out 91/30s giving one a rifle and the guy behind him a few rounds.
amyhuk 9 months ago
@HHH100 There are no marks on the hex... At least none on the ones ive seen

I would argue that the Kalashnikov has been used in more revolutions and conflicts than the Mosin Nagant, although the nagant has been around much longer. The production numbers of about 37 million Mosin Nagants are completely crippled by the 100 million AK-47's and its variants. The entire continent of Africa has been changed due to Kalashnikov along with South East Asia
cwbyfan223 1 year ago
@cwbyfan223 not a question of numbers made, its number of revolutions/conflicts/wars they were used in. if you have 37 million Mosin Nagants used in 20 wars, and 100 million AK47s used in 10 wars, Mosin has seen more wars.
45Blackjack 1 year ago
the finnish made was known as the Sako.

RandomPoolGuy84 1 year ago
@RandomPoolGuy84 Can't tell you exactly in terms of ft/lbs of energy, or velocity, but the .30-06 is 7.62x63, and the 7.62x54R is... 7.62x54(rimmed). This means that the .30-06 has around 9mms more cartridge capacity than the 7.62x54R.

joker9494949494 1 year ago
@Iraqveteran8888 I disliked the part about it being in more revoulutions/Wars then any other weapon in history because the AK-47 has just been in about as much wars/rebellions as the Mosin.
KozMick1 1 year ago
@KozMick1 name a war from 1891 up to today and the mosin will for the most part be found there in 1 form or another, cant say that about the ak47. AK47 was officially accepted by the Soviet military in 1949, the West didnt get their hands on 1 till mid 1950s, and it really didnt see alot of action till mid 1960s Vietnam. Theres alot of Mosin Nagants & Ak47s still in use in Afghanistan.
